Any new or returning shows you're excited about?
Here's a link:
http://television.aol.com/feature/fall_tv
Looks like Thursdays are going to be my biggest problem. I want to check out Ugly Betty, which is on at the same time as Earl & The Office. They've pitted Grey's against Supernatural at 9, and I still watch ER at 10. Bless you, Tivo inventor.
20 Good Years & 30 Rock (both NBC Wednesdays 8pm)look like they could be funny, and Brothers & Sisters (ABC Sundays 10pm) has an impressive cast - Sally Field, Patrica Wettig, Clista Flockhart - but that won't mean anything if the writing blows.
I'm very annoyed that both Medium & Scrubs won't be back until early 2007. And I will restate my annual vow that I will NOT allow TV to run my life, constantly obsessing over shows I've missed or should be watching. It's just TV, Paula, it's just TV. :o

Well I'm already behind. I missed the premier of the new Brad Garrett show :distress: I really wanted to see it and heard it was good.
I want to see Brothers and Sisters and 30Rock (is that the Tina Fey one?) Looks really funny. I saw a trailer on NBC.com that cracked me up - and she is a brilliant writer - so I'm hopeful. And I've always had a secret crush on Alex Baldwin.
I'm already overwhelmed - and it looks like I'll once again end up watching nothing but Desperate Housewives.
TV shouldn't stress a person out..yet I'm already stressed because I can't keep any of the new shows straight...!!

Tell me about. The fall season doesn't just mean good tv again but also it means back to school, which means helping the kids with homework, cleaning up after supper, clean clothes for the next day, bath time and all this to get done before "mommy's show starts"

From the list of returning shows on that link...all I'm looking forward to is "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and "The Office". Although I know damn well "The King of Queens" is coming back for it's last season but maybe not til much later I'll catch it when it airs. I'll still watch "Desperate Housewives" - I'm just not certain I'll be entertained by it - it really was in full-suck mode when I abandoned it for "The Sopranos" last season.

oh sometimes it feels like so much more paula. TV can be very very importnat, its just a fact of life.
Returning Shows:
House- By far my favorite show on TV, tied with Rescue Me, which is a summer show anyway
Monk- favorite next to House, so hilarious, will be back in January, so I guess its technically winter TV.
NCIS
CSI- used to be my favorite, I still love it but its not a s good as House or as good now as it once was.
Without a Trace
Cold Case
Lost
Family Guy
NEW Shows
Til Death- only since Im a Huge Everybody Loves Raymond fan, I got to at least try this
Shark- looks good

Family Guy premiered last night. Friggin hilarious. Peter had a prostate exam - enough said.
I like Christine and Ghost Whisperer too. I've always wanted to get into House, but it's always opposite something else I watch. That's the same reason I never got into Lost.
I don't think I'll bother with Desperate Housewives this season. I stopped watching halfway though last year. Bo-ring. Grey's is a must, though.
As far as cable goes, I've heard great things about Rescue Me, but I've only seen a few eps. Love The Closer, which just ended last week. And my brother & mom LOVE Monk. I don't have HBO, so all of those shows are out - I'm probably better off - I'd never leave the house. :o

House started last week, which rules! It was a great episode. I love that crazy House. What ****ty things will he say next week ?!?
I'm setting the Tivo for these shows:
Heroes- I saw the pilot and it was AWESOME. And, it has Greg Grunberg from Alias and Milo Ventimiglia from Gilmore Girls.
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip- new Aaron Sorkin.
Gilmore Girls- even though it will SUCK
Veronica Mars- they are messing with my life by putting this against House, but Veronica wins.
Jericho- I will try this one. I really liked Skeet Ulrich's last show, Miracles.
Lost- yeah.
The Nine- will be on after Lost, so I'll give it a whirl.
Ugly Betty- I could've sworn they were supposed to put this on on Fridays, when it wouldn't cause a problem. Now I have to pick between it and Survivor, and fight with my boyfriend who likes to watch Smallville, the worst show known to man.
CSI- I have NO problem giving up Grey's for CSI. Especially if they show more of the Grissom and Sara BONING one another.
Six Degrees- I might suck it up and try it, even though it looks so cheesy. It's a new JJ Abrams show, so.
Men In Trees- maybe. Not sure. They're airing the pilot this week, today or tomorrow ? Can't remember. I'll give it a chance.
Brothers and Sisters- I am actually excited for this show. Jon Robin Baitz is a pretty great playwright and he wrote an AMAZING episode of Alias. The cast looks awesome (Ron Rifkin.) and I like Ken Olin's work on the Alias. Also, they fired Marti Noxon, She Who Ruined Buffy, in favor of the guy who ran Everwood, so I think their heart is obviously in the right place.
I am a TV whore. I have no problem with this- my two favorite hobbies are knitting and being completely stoned, both of which go really well with the TV watching.
ETA: I forgot to add what I am most excited about. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, October 6th on Sci-Fi. I don't care if it seems geeky- it is, in my opinion, without a doubt the best show on television. It is so well plotted, well acted, tense, and scary. It's beyond good. I'm so excited for it to be back on TV, as well as the second series of Doctor Who that will start being shown over here too around then.

Oh man, you need to get season 1 and 2 on DVD and watch EVERY episode. The get season 3 when it comes out and be ready for season 4 in the spring. I started watching during season 2. So i missed season 1, I got it one day on a tuesday and had the whole season watched by Saturday.

The Office!!! - I can't freakin' wait until September 21st!!
Lost - Can't wait to find out what happens to Sawyer, Jack and Kate. I miss Desmond too...can't wait to see Ian. Yum!
Psych - I love this silly show. It comes on after Monk, which I like too. They both come back in January!
Prison Break - Its already started its second season, but I just recently became MAJORLY addicted to it. It's my new fave show. It's on in 4 1/2 hours!! CANNOT FREAKIN' WAIT!!
:blob2:
ETA: Rescue Me...I enjoy it. It won't be back for awhile though, I think. The season finale was a couple of weeks ago.

The only one I'm excited about so far (I haven't been paying too much attention) is 30 Rock (that is the one written by Tina Fey with Alec Baldwin, right?) and if it actually is on Wed. at 8, that will interfere with AMNT (America's Next Top Model). Great, I only want to watch 2 shows a week, and they're on at the same time.

I'm not a huge episodic or dramatic tv watcher on a regular basis, but the one show that I saw a preview for that looked really good is "Smith" with Ray Liotta & Virginia Madsen. It looked excellent from the preview.
On the surface, Bobby Stevens (Ray Liotta) is a family man with a regular job. In reality, he is a criminal mastermind who pulls off elaborate heists with a crack crew of criminals.

Why is Gilmore Girls going to suck this season?
The creator of the show, Amy Sherman-Palladino, and her husband, Daniel Palladino, head writer, left this summer when contract negotiations fell through. The vast majority of the writing staff has also left, and the show's going to be run by a guy named Dave Rosenthal this year who only worked on the show last year.
Amy's episodes have always been the heart and soul of the show. She writes those girls better than anyone ever has been able to. Daniel's episodes tend to be the ones that epitomize everything that people are critical of the show for- the weird allusions, overly snappy one-liners, and speed talking- but he still writes solid, funny episodes.
They also made some really crappy choices last year in the way they chose to write the Luke-Lorelai relationship, especially in the season finale.
This is way too much to write about this ridiculous subject and shows that I care WAY too much. So, in short-
1) Show creator has left
2) Writing staff is entirely new
3) They really f-ed up last season, and I don't know if they can fix it
4) Could be last year of the show anyways

Well, she had pretty much broken it off with Luke when she did it. It was definitely out of character, though.
I keep rewatching that final scene with Luke & Lorelai (thanks, Tivo, for letting me torture myself for the last four months) and it's just heartbreaking. Why did they have to turn him into such a complete ass and her into a doormat?

I do still have it on Tivo- I also have five hours of Arrested Development stored from February, even though I actually now own them all on DVD. I love that Tivo.
I did steadfastly refuse to watch, let alone record, any of the repeats of last year's episodes over the summer.

Psychotic, schmycotic. Tivo friggin' rules. I want to change from cable to the dish, but I've been putting it off. The dish's DVR is about half the price of Tivo, but how the hell am I supposed to actually make the switch without missing anything? Something's bound to fall through the cracks during this process. I think she is really, really phony, and she pretends to be nice and understand emotions, but she clearly does not. It makes me sick when she has those talk sessions with the models one on one. God, she's phony. I just think she is really lame. I don't think she is funny at all, and I think she is often wrong when she talks about the model's personalities. I didn't watch Gilmore Girls last season but have caught quite a few reruns over the summer. I watched 2 last night, the ones where Lorelei makes her toast at Lane's wedding and she gets in trouble with April's mother for taking over the birthday party.
Luke seems so uptight and stuff I think I would like Lorelei with Christopher better. (ducking) But I haven't even seen seasons 4 and 5 yet either to see how they built their relationship. If I had I imagine watching it crumble would kill me.
It seems contrived that April's mother would be so furious about that party, like the writers had to come up with something to keep L & L apart. Why couldn't they just make them happy and have all the drama surround Rory which would be more appropriate anyway given her age?
Last night they showed the previews of the season premiere where Lorelei says, "I slept with Christopher." It seems desperate on their part to put that in, like they have to give that part of the plot away to hook us.
I am totally looking forward to the SP of Grey's. Like, with an embarrassingly high amount of anticipation. :o

I agree with you about the writing. Why would someone get so pissed that Lorelai helped at a party for their daughter? She's not new to Luke's life or anything. It just seemed really unrealistic to me. That and the fact that Luke refused to take a stand & defend her. Grrr...

Oh Chris is still irresponsible? I thought he grew out of that. Oh then screw him, I want Luke to forgive her!
He's faux responsible. He inherited a **** ton of money from his father and so now he really just has money but is the same tool as always.
Luke and Lorelai... I just... the way they've handled the relationship since they started dating is not something I've been happy with. If you go back to episodes in the first season like Love and War and Snow and see how much he truly did PINE for her... those episodes, and a lot of Season 2, show just how much chemistry they had. I just don't like that all of a sudden Luke GETS the girl, he wins her! and he turns into a total ass. He's always been a somewhat clueless guy, and he gets ranty, but he has a heart and is not stupid. The Luke of Seasons 1-4 would never ignore Lorelai the way he did this year, kid or no.
I've read reports that Scott Patterson & Lauren Graham do NOT get along. Some speculate that that's where a lot of the weirdness on the show comes from. I dunno. I just find it really depressing.
In other news- Target is currently selling all of the seasons for $18.99 a piece. I think the sale is on until Sunday, when the new circular is out. That sale also extends to Arrested Development Season 1, Firefly, Veronica Mars Season 1, and 24 Season 1 among others- ALL shows I wish everyone would watch.

Omigod, $18.99? No way!!! Thanks for the headsup, I have been waiting for a good sale. I figured something would come up cuz 6 gets released the 19th. Woot! :blob1:
You're right about that chemistry early on. I loved Luke so much. He's just such a nice guy and you're right, he would never ignore Lorelei. I mean seriously! I have to check out Veronica Mars since so many people seem to love it. Although I am wary of starting another show cuz I already watch too damn much TV!

New shows I've seen so far:
Men in Trees: I've already mentioned it, but I feel like telling you all again. Great show. It should be on this Friday at 9pm.
'Til Death: A few cute moments, but I have to admit I didn't laugh once during the first half of the show. Not a good sign.
Happy Hour: Couldn't hold my attention for more than 5 minutes. I read the paper while it was on.
The Class: I loved it. :) Very funny. I only hope they don't focus on the main guy, the one who invited them all to his fiance's party - cuz he was the most boring character.
I missed Smith (fell asleep.)
Now remember kids, ER & Ghost Whisperer return this week, and I think Earl & The Office do too. Top Model is tonight.

Not too bad actually - it held my attention for the hour - not sure how they'll sustain this through a whole season, but I love Dana Delany - so I'll probably keep watching.
This weekend I'm up for Brother and Sisters and Desperate Housewives :blob1:

Ok - so anyone else catch the premier of Desperate Housewives?
I thought it was ok - but there was one part that irked me. When Bree tells the girls she's engaged, she also reveals she and Orson (Kyle whatever/TreyMacDougal) haven't had sex - that made me chuckle - because that was something right out of Sex and the City - BUT the exchange that took place afterward with Gabrielle et al - tried to hard, IMO, to capture a Sex and the City vibe/feel - and someone needs to inform Mark Cherry that he is not Darren Star. So that really bugged me - otherwise I was generally pleased with the season starter.
Then I stuck around for the new show Brothers and Sisters. I stuck with it for the first half hour, then switched to Without a Trace (which I'd never seen before) at the commercial break - and it grabbed my attention much better.
Brothers and Sister. Good cast, but I found it very flat. Calista Flockhart could not have had less personality, her character was so boring, and Sally Field, though not in what I saw a whole lot was not at the top of her game. As a die-hard Steel Magnolias fan though I love the show's pairing of Sally Field and Tom Skerrit - thougH I think they're killing him off in the next episode.
I think the show was too cliche'd in the family dynamic - too forced....I'm not sure I'll tune in again.

That figures  But I got all sucked into Without a Trace
I'll probably give Brothers and Sisters another chance next week, I did see the preview and it looked intersting. For some reason though Rachel Griffiths just rubs me the wrong way. She kind of reminds me of someone from my past who I can't stand - and I have a hard time watching her...I'm trying to get over that....
But I don't know the whole family dynamic annoyed me...like it was so forced - the gay brother, the good married sister w/ relationship issues, the loser-drunkard, the "misfit", and the seemingly good guy...they just needed an adopted black or asian sibling to make the cliche complete!
And I guess I'm closed minded, but the fac that the main character is a right-wing radio/tv person really bugged me.

Oh good - wasn't my imagination then - but the whold Gabrielle/Bree exchange...whatever, Gabby is NOT Samantha.
Anyway - I think they left it mysterious as to why Orson ran Mike over - it was totally random. First we meet him as Susan's friend - then he's running Mike down...no explanation - and they didn't even address it in this ep.
I, too, was thrilled to see Laurie Metcalf...hope she doesn't get run down by Orson :p

I caught the new Ted Danson sitcom last night - Help Me Help You or something. I think it has potential - I like the concept because from my experience counselors and therapists are often just as (if not more) screwed up than the rest of us in their personal lives.
Anyway - Jane Kazcmarek was, as always, charming and brilliant, but Ted is looking a bit odd these days - not sure what it is (too much makeup? )
Don't know.
I also watched Boston Legal for the first time last night - what a great show! I may end up watchign that one more regularly.
I'm really looking forward to the premier of Ugly Betty on Thursday - and I have to wait until October 11 for 30Rock..but I'm looking forward to that one too.

i think the only reason i watched it was for sally field -- and i really wanted to like it. i ended up being really dissapointed with the dialogue and interaction. i also felt as though the characters weren't introduced very well. i expected more from such a strong cast and i fear in terms of character development, it's going to tank. i'm not very hopeful. and you're right, calista's character = snoozefest. even for a republican.

Agree on all points. The actors (esp. Matthew Perry) have done a great job establishing their new characters. I don't see them as any of their previous roles, and they seem to work well together. I'm loving Amanda Peet, and I was never a big fan before. D.L. Hughley is great too.
The sketch. I think it would have gone over better had they not showed them working it out & discussing it beforehand, and esp. if they hadn't given away the BEST line ("we hope you don't mind that our producer was caught doing blow") But it was OK. Did you notice that they specifically mentioned NBC, SNL & Lorne Michaels as competition? It's like they were making it very clear that this show is NOT about SNL.

I was very happy to see Abraham Benrubi and Cynthia Stevenson..I enjoy them both...but I don't know - the whole feel of the show and esp. the main character is they're trying too hard to make her a "Carrie Bradshaw" type character...and it's just not working for me.

Well, Studio 60 is officially my favorite new show this year. "She wants us to make fun of her." "OK, well, your teeth are kind of big."
And Brothers & Sisters is getting better & better, IMO. "It's so quiet because my kids think I don't know that my husband used to sleep with that woman sitting right there at the table. And it seems that they've lost all social graces & can't even carry on a dinner conversation because of it."
Men in Trees is still cute & funy, but I don't know how long the back & forth between Marin & the hot guy can last. Loved the virgin guy getting his stand stuck in the condom dispenser. :D

I admit I haven't read through this thread yet, so probably most of these shows have been discussed. I don't want to read it until I'm caught up, as there might be spoilers. I'm late to fall TV, as I've been Tivo'ing everything but spending most of my time watching baseball.
New shows I like:
Vanished (I'm up to week 4). I guess this show is on hiatus for a couple of weeks and then going to Fridays. Not good. I think the acting is pretty bad, especially the ex-wife, but I'm all caught up in it.
Kidnapped (I'm caught up). Um, what exactly is the difference in concept between Vanished and Kidnapped? And I'm getting the details between the shows mixed up. Better acting than Vanished, though. I read it is already cancelled and they are wrapping up the story in 13 episodes. My shows never make it.
New shows I've taped and haven't watched yet. Would be open to input on whether or not to bother:
Jericho
Heroes
Shark
Ugly Betty
Sunset Strip show
Friday Night Lights
Summer shows I miss already:

I quit watching Studio 60 because it was boring me. It's basically West Wing without being interesting to me. It's very self-important- with West Wing that was okay, because- hello, they were saving the world all the time. I just don't get the urgency in being so self-involved about a TV show that hasn't been relevant for years (pick one- SNL OR the fictional show).
I LOVE Heroes. LOOOVE Heroes. When watching it, I feel like I did about Lost when it was first on. I think it's really interesting.
Friday Night Lights is supposed to be GREAT- I can't watch it as it conflicts with another one of my shows, but I really liked the movie in the first place and have heard nothing but good things about the show.
I also loooooove Ugly Betty. Even my boyfriend got really into it. It's silly and predictable but FUN.

Friday Night Lights - I love it! How could I not? It's filmed in Austin, the boys are cute and I adore football (well, college football, anyway). What!?! Are they really canceling Kidnapped? Ah piss. Figures. The one show I got into
I haven't seen Ugly Betty yet....but in this day of Immigration issues I don't know that Mexican stereotypes are the way to go  But I still want to see the show for myself - I've just not had the chance and keep forgetting to record it.

Ugly Betty is equal opportunity on the stereotypes. I think it's hilarious. My boyfriend loves it too, but I'm not supposed to tell anyone... oops. I'm also not supposed to tell anyone that he gets cattier than I do about the clothes when I "force" him to watch Project Runway, and refused to change the channel during an all day marathon of What Not To Wear on Sunday.
Why isn't anyone watching Heroes? It's so flipping awesome and I want everyone to watch it. Like, now.

^ I was going to catch it this week, and that stupid storm happened & F'd everything up. I saw a tiny bit on my tiny 2" screen - where the professor's son was talking to "Jess". :D
Mine's the same way about Runway. He bitches about it, but plopped himself right in front of the TV with me yesterday to watch. Um, we have 2 other TVs he could have watched. Then, when I suggested we should get ready for bed soon, he said "aren't we going to watch the end?"

Mark & I are really into Heroes now. Love this show. I'm still having a hard time figuring out who's connected to who in what way & all that, but I can't wait to watch each week to put more pieces of the puzzle together.
I've also been able to see a few eps of Ugly Betty, which I really enjoy. Her nephew is priceless. The Halloween ep? "I'm Gene Kelly!" "Yeah, but remember, just tell people that you're a proud member of the U.S. Navy."

The networks really don't allow shows to generate a following anymore. They pull shows after two episodes.

Me too. Anytime I've tuned in it's been just because it was on after Heroes. I think I actively seeked it out once- when Lauren Graham was going to be on. I was disappointed in it from the beginning. It just seemed so very self-important to me. I think that's okay when it's The West Wing and the plotline is about you know, avoiding World War III- not when it's about which unfunny sketch will make it to air.
Paula- glad you're watching Heroes. Does it not totally rule? Hiro is my favorite character on TV right now. I think I almost peed my pants on Monday night when Ando, in response to those guys questions about why they'd go to the bathroom together, said "That's how we roll."

All the connections keep freaking me out - the guys playing poker with Hiro & Ando, then getting massacred, then we later find out it was Niki. I can barely keep it all straight.
Do you think Niki is bad/evil? I don't think she's one of the people who are going to save the cheerleader, do you?

I'm not sure yet.... I definitely think she's bad/evil in the sense that the actress drives me crazy and her storyline is by far my least favorite of them all. I do like the addition of DL- mainly because he is flipping HOT. I don't remember him being that hot when he was on Buffy. I think the kid, Micah, is the one with the hardcore powers that we just don't know about yet.
I like all the connections too- it's like Lost only not annoying. My favorite was Hiro meeting Nathan a couple of weeks ago in that diner. "Up up and awaaaay!" Have you seen all the episodes? If you missed a couple you should read the recaplets or the recaps at Television Without Pity.

I only watch 3 shows each week. Personally the new shows really haven't caught my eye. But the shows im watching now are:
South Park 2nd half of season 10:- So far this has been incredible, with a new episode tonight. I think this will be the 5th/7. This season really has made me LOL. I am enjoying it so much.
House- This show is so great. But I don't like the cop from last nights episode.
Nip-Tuck- Loving it so far. Missed last nights episode though. I WANT MORE ROSIE! She is hilarious in this!
Did I also read that Smith got cancelled? Or Heroes? I don't remember which one.

That's the thing- we DON'T know he's evil! He hasn't really done anything overtly evil. I mean, he trashed that football player but wouldn't you if he'd tried to rape your kid? He could very well be a good guy... my bf thinks he's going to be like the Professor X for all of them.

Oh, he's smoking hot on Heroes. He had a scene a couple of weeks ago where he was running around in PJ pants with no shirt and he looks DAAAAMN good.
PS- I totally watch more TV than Paula and that's okay. I have a social life, too. My Tivo list is ridiculously extensive- but my hobbies are things that are inclined towards being able to watch TV while doing them- knitting, sewing, & spinning. Like, I don't get it- does Mohinder have powers? Or is that boy around and affecting his dreams? His dad's file that he found said something about the soccer ball boy and powers involving sleeping / dreams / REM cycles / whatever. I hope Mohinder doesn't have powers, because if he does his nickname is going to have to be Nap Man.
I can't wait to find out what happens with Hiro and this going back in the future thing. Why couldn't he just have gone back an hour and pulled her out of the diner? I wonder if this is when he figures out whatever he seems to know in the future, when he's talking to Peter in the subway, about time rifts.

Random thoughts and questions.
I'm a couple weeks behind with "Heroes". I enjoy it, but feel like it's going really slowly and at some point I need some answers and resolution. I also need much more Peter and his beautiful floppy hair. And Hiro...that character bugs me. Why did they make him like a silly girl? It seems like they created a bit of an offensive character, ethnically. But I don't know.
What the hell happened to Kidnapped? They said it was cancelled, but would have 13 episodes and it would wrap up. Am I missing something?
Vanished....is vanished? Is it completely gone and we just have to write the ending ourselves?
I'm kind of over these "serialized dramas". If they are going to cancel them after 8 to 10 episodes, then it's a waste of our time to watch them.
I lost interested in Ugly Betty.
I have taped each Friday Night Lights and haven't watched any of them yet.

I am extremely upset that they've pit Scrubs against Grey's. Scrubs is one of the funniest shows on TV & they're always screwing with it - it's like NBC wants it to die. That, and that fact that Men In Trees is now opposite ER which has suddenly gotten good again. :(

Saving Grace. Hmmm. Well. I want to like it. I like all the actors, esp. Holly. The ep. this past week shocked me with the ending. But like Ricky, I don't know if I like her character enough - she's kind of an asshole. :p I know, that's the point, for her to make her life better or whatever. But I'm still unsure. Yes, but it's gonna be awhile:

FX has decided that once was not enough for its new series "Dirt" and "The Riches."
The cable network has picked up both shows for a second season after they delivered ratings in line with some of FX's veteran shows. Both are scheduled to return sometime next year.
And Variety reported that Nip/Tuck would be back "sometime in the fall."

I caught the first 2 episodes on Damages last night (apparently they rerun them on My Network or whatever they're calling the former WB thses days.) What a crazy f*cking show that is. It's fabulous. Glenn Close is superb (as if I expected anything different.) I'm so intrigued & confused & scared & excited at the same time, I must contiune watching. But it will be tough - it's very obvious that you really need to see every ep in order to have the slightest clue wth is going on. I'll be setting the Tivo for this one.

^ I was browsing the TV listings & it looks like they're rerunning eps on FX practically every night - 10pm EST, I think?

Yeah, just two shows so far. I haven't seen this week's episode yet. First runs are Tuesdays at 10 pm on FX.
I had forgotten how great Glenn Close is! She's magnificent in this show.
