I'll wed when all can, Pitt says

September 9, 2006

NEW YORK -- Brad Pitt, ever the social activist, says he won't be marrying Angelina Jolie until the restrictions on who can marry whom are dropped.

''Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able,'' Pitt tells Esquire magazine.

Though their daughter Shiloh hogged much attention upon her birth in May, the actor says he ''cannot imagine life'' without adopted children Maddox, 5, and Zahara, 1.

''They're as much of my blood as any natural born, and I'm theirs,'' Pitt says. ''That's all I can say about it. I can't live without them. So, anyone considering [adoption], that's my vote.'' AP

I read that too...seems odd to me because its almost as though he thinks by making this pronouncement, Governments will be forced to change their laws or something....so, realistically, they will never marry

I just read it as a political statement. I'm sure he has a big ego, but I doubt he thinks his one statement will give us gay marriage.

I think it's great to have someone of this popularity making a strong statement against marriage discrimination. Usually people stay as far away from that issue as possible.

I didn't expect Brad Pitt to be one to make that strong a pronouncement regarding same sex marriage, but I still remember his Tonight Show promo for one of his movies years ago when he portrayed going door to door to get people to watch that movie and he said he'd do "anything" to get this guy to see the movie. The next scene showed him in bed with the guy.

He might be banking on his popularity as an actor (and as a sex symbol even among straight men) to be a catalyst for turning the tide toward same sex marriage. Sometimes it takes the Hollywood types and the sports world to nudge people toward real change.

good for him. that takes balls and a very strong female partner (which Angie is, no doubt)

that makes 2 so far, right? Brad and Charlize Theron?

Personally, I would be PISSED if my boyfriend told me something like that ... I think it's a cop-out on both of their parts.

That is great. I think it is only a matter of time before same sex marriage is legal. But something needs to happen soon....

As far as Brad is concerned, I was just thinking that I have never actually seen a Brad Pitt movie. Unless you count Thelma and Louise.

a cop-out? i don't see how it's a cop-out ... it's just a statement. you don't need a marriage license to be committed ... gay people do it all the time.

Good one Brad  You'll never have to marry that bitch now. Smart man. He might as well have said, "When hell freezes over, I'll marry Angie"

I think it's a really nice sentiment and I think Brad was ultimately trying to do something good.

Guess I'm not as cynical as I thought I was - but I say good for Brad..and I hope this pronouncement does open some eyes to the issue!

I have no idea what this means...

thats cuz yer a young pup. its from a song:

Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
His sister had another one, she paid it for the lime

She put the lime in the coconut, she drank 'em both up (3x)
Put the lime in the coconut, she called the doctor, woke him up, and said

Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take, I said
Doctor, to relieve this bellyache, I said
Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take, I said
Doctor, to relieve this bellyache

Now let me get this straight
Put the lime in the coconut, you drank 'em both up (3x)
Put the lime in the coconut, you called your doctor, woke him up, and said

Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take, I said
Doctor, to relieve this bellyache, I said
Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take, I said
Doctor, to relieve this bellyache

You put the lime in the coconut, you drink 'em both together
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better
Put the lime in the coconut, drink 'em both up
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the morning

Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
His sister had another one, she paid it for the lime
She put the lime in the coconut, she drank 'em both up
Put the lime in the coconut, she called the doctor, woke him up, and said

Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take, I said
Doctor, to relieve this bellyache, I said
Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take, I said
Now let me get this straight

You put the lime in the coconut, you drink 'em both up (3x)
Put the lime in the coconut, you're such a silly woman

Put the lime in the coconut, you drink 'em both together
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better
Put the lime in the coconut, drink 'em both down
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the morning

Woo-oo, ain't there nothin' you can take, I said
Woo-oo, to relieve your bellyache, you said
Woo-oo, ain't there nothin' I can take, I said
Woo-oo, to relieve your bellyache, you say

Yeah-ah, ain't there nothing I can take, I say
Wow-ow, to relieve this bellyache, I said
Doctor, ain't there nothin' I can take, I said (3x)
Doctor, you're such a silly woman

Put the lime in the coconut, you drink 'em both together
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better
Put the lime in the coconut, drink 'em both up
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the mo-o-ornin'

Yes, you call me in the morning
If you call me in the morning I'll tell you what to do {repeat to fade}

I cant believe people dont remember that! I guess I AM getting old...

Oh Brad, pu-lease.

I think it's an interesting sentiment, but I have to wonder: does he really think the world cares THAT much if he marries her? DOES the world care that much???

What is wrong with everyone? Everyone is rolling their eyes at Brad, but he is just trying to bring awareness to a serious issue. I have a new respect for him. Why is everyone beating him up for something like this?

I'm confused because I thought everyone here was fairly liberal and believed in these kinds of things. So, why is everyone acting as if Brad is a selfish twit just because he is making a statement that supports gay marriage?

And I don't really like Brad Pitt. I've never even seen one of his movies, I just think everyone is being too hard on him. He has good intentions...

i don't get it either. BP uses his immense celebrity to shine a light on some very important issues. this is no different.

It's a nice idea, since any statement he makes gets so much press. Of course, I can't imagine anything I care less about, than whether or not Brad and Angelina get married, so it doesn't work as a protest for me.

I want to hear him say" "I won't take any more money for my work, until everyone else can make 30 million a job!"
"I refuse to eat another $300 meal, until everyone else in this country has some dinner!"
Or something like that. ;)

I absolutely believe in these kinds of things. I just think it's sad that anyone would care that much if Brad and Angelina got married. I applaud the fact that the two of them seem to care a great deal about important issues.

It's also hypocritical since he's already been married once. But I think it is cool that he is shining light on the issue. It's also cool that he isn't getting married since they'd wind up divorced eventually anyway. But I think that some people don't think much of this because they don't think much of him which I can totally identify with. Charity begins at home and if you can't be good to the people you are closest to (Jen) then all the good works you do in the world are tainted by that. Not that he can't do any good and I am glad that he is. I just think the way he moved on with his life with Angelina says a lot about his character and it isn't good.

Gay marriage wasn't part of the public consciousness when he married JA, so it probably wasn't on his mind.

I also think it's cool. I don't particularly like him, but there are very few major public figures willing to take a stand on this.

But the fact is people do care if they get married. Even us Ledgies talk about the Brad/Jen/Vince/Angelina triangle all the time. We don't want to care, but we just can't stop talking about it. If people didn't care than it wouldn't be on the cover of magazines every week.

^^

Well Angelina does give what 1/3 of her salary to charity - because in her works or close to them, " I make a dumb salary for what I do." I LOVED that. And I've NEVER liked her....and I never got all the Brad Pitt hype...

But I have to say I do like that he made this statement, and I like that they are at least trying to do things to make this world more fair and equal...they're doing a lot more than others in their field

Damn. I'm going to have to return my cynical membership card now, aren't I. :P

That is great of her. And I don't even like her as an actress or as a person (at least from what I read in the tabloids). I think she is strange! But, it seems like she has good intentions...
