:distress:
Do you know how hard it is for someone with food issues to say no to a big plate full of beautiful doughnuts? It's really f**king hard.
It's not just that I like to eat, my sister and I both have actual problems with food. So no jibes, please, about how I don't know how to eat healthy on my own, or that I'm a moron, it's a realy issue and I hate it.
I realize that I am, in fact, VERY lucky to not weigh more than I do. The way I've eaten in the past - I should be well over 200 pounds. I think the saving factor is that I don't lead a sedentary life, and up until about two years ago I was an AVID gym goer - I mean I was fierce...so I was able to eat like a pig - and maintain an OK weight. I've never been skinny -and never will be.
Anyway - it's truly one of the hardest things to do just to say no to a stupid doughnut - and I hate that I have these food issues, I hate that it's SUCH an obsession with me.
I'm starting to think some of my co-workers are food-pushers, which I hate.
We had ice-cream cake last week (which thankfullY I don't like all that much - but in the past I would have eaten it anyway). Anyway - I said no and got all sorts of pressure for not eating any ice cream cake. I finally lied and told everyone I was lactose intolerant. Great - so now do I have to be lactose intolerant for my tenure at this station?
Anyway - food issues really really suck.

Me Either, which is why this is such a big deal. And I know one doughunt - not bad - but I then have trouble stopping - that's the issue - the over-eating and over-eating the crap. I HATE it....but I'm working on it :o

OK. I officially designate this thread as our new "diet/lifestyle change/wieght loss support thread."
I've been wanting to start another thread about this subject again (can't seem to locate the diet & exercise one, plus it's probably pretty old), so we don't have to keep highjacking the "what are you eating" thread. Those who post there & are able to eat Big Macs daily without a problem (bastards) probably don't give a **** how may calories or points are in an almond.
So. Yes. Let's discuss how f*cking hard it is to lose weight & resist temptation here. I agree about the food pushing - at my old job, someone would bring crap in a few times a week, whether it was donuts, bagels, rolls, pizza, whatever. It sucked. To see it & smell it & know how good it tastes (but how bad it is) sucks. Hard. I'd usually eat it.
New job - healthier people, it seems. Takeout meals are few & far between, same with treats. So that's a good thing. One thing I've learned is that if something's not available to me, I don't really want it. Like, I never buy donuts for my home, I just don't care to. But if they're out on a table at work, I'd want one.
BTW - I'm about 4 pounds down after 2&1/2 weeks. Slow & steady wins the race, right? Plus, I'm def. seeing more muscle tone & definition, at least in my arms.

Me too. I LOVE food, and I mean REAL food, none of that rabbit crap!!!!! Gimme melted cheese and grease!!!!!!! Sweets are okay, but definitely NOT my obsession. Gimme melted cheese and grease!!!!!!! I think I've accepted that I'm always going to be 25 lbs overweight. I CAN weigh 160, by eating rabbit food, and working out 3 days a week.....ALWAYS being hungry......and never allowing myself "good" food. F*CK THAT!!!! Life's too short. Gimme melted cheese and grease!!!!!!!

No offense - but that's so not true
It may be for some - but that's never been the case for me. This isn't my first go at the health thing - several years ago I was all über good eater - but the temptation got to me and then got out of hand. Oh - well ok - it's EASIER but never easy :(
I hate the "just take one bite of the cake - it's the best one" bull****! The whole piece tastes just as good as that first bite - and let me tell ya -the second piece tastes even better
The "bring a piece of fruit to a party where you know there will be temptation - you won't even miss the bad food" Again - bull****!
The people who say those things totally don't understand compulsive eaters or the food obsessed
That said - I am actually doing pretty well with the eating - it's just a contant battle and sometimes (like today) the bitch and bitter side of me comes out. sigh.
I'm glad others are undergoing this feat too though - it makes it easier :o

I live in the South. home of sugar-coated, Crisco-loving, if-it-is-edible-we-fry-it hips and thighs. believe me, I know how hard it is to resist. I do think it gets easier. you just have to really be committed and have your head in it.
like my Mama used to say, you won't do it until YOU really WANT to.

Deanna you are not alone! I practically used to live on grease, carbs, and sugars, which is why I used to look like this..

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a24/fleetwoodnicks7/73135072.jpg
After a long, and painful, fight with my weight, I decided it was time to lose it and I did. After 11 months, I had gone from 261 pounds and a size 42 waist to a 180ish pound 34/32 waist. I will be honest, I am Cuban and giving up any of the fattening stuff I liked was not easy. Like Deanna said, I would get on the treadmill and just run and run and run sometimes for HOURS. But this also meant I didnt have to give up the doughnuts and what-nots. However, (I will admit this for the first time here because I am very much over it and comfortable enough to share it) this briefly led to an eating disorder, which I was able to get a hand on very quickly.

This is basically how I look today. I am not nearly where I want to be as I am trying to lose/tone down the last 10 pounds. But let me tell you, everyday is a CONSTANT struggle. Plus, it does not help that I am a night owl and up until 3A.M. and it is VERY hard to resist the temptation to eat anything at 1 or 2 in the morning. So, trust me, this is something that never completely goes away, but little battles like the won you just won help towards the bigger picture. :)

well, okay, maybe it's not the case for everyone. but i would absolutely put myself in the food-obsessed/compulsive eater category. what i posted earlier is true for me, but not everything works for everybody. sorry it's not true for you. maybe the years i spent in therapy before starting this diet did the trick.

I too am tempted more by "cheese & grease" type foods than sweets. One mini piece of chocolate a day is all I need, but bring out Doritos & I'm screwed. :D Same with chips, or pizza, or burgers, or even pasta....
Not that I eat 5 burgers at one sitting or anything like that. But in general this is the stuff I overindulge in, or ignore portion size. I can stop at 1 piece of cake, but damned if I don't want another helping of garlic bread, or pizza, or chicken fingers, or fries. God, fries. :o I will (and have) keep eating them regardless of whether I'm full. I try to stay away to avoid this.
I'm trying to eat better more for health reasons - high cholesterol & heart disease are very prevelant in my fam. I'm trying to avoid the same mistakes they've made. I want to lose about 10 more pounds, but I'm not about to kill myself to get thin. I don't like rabbit food either - I'm just trying to eat less bad food.

Well, I screwed up yet again today. I have got to do better. We had a recognition lunch here at work for those of us who worked together on a project. So, we went to a nice downtown restraunt and had lunch, and what did I get? A big ol' hamburger with caramelized onions, cheddar, and mushrooms with fries. That's the only thing I've had today. But I regret it. I can stay away from sweets with no problem, but when it comes to lunches and the sort, I have a really hard time.

But yes, it gets easier - just never easy. As Alex said, it's a constant struggle.
Of course - it's helped that this week I'm learning that healthy cooking can also be delicious - like the burrito I made last night ....oh. my. God. I can't even believe it's healthish it was so good.
Being an optimist (which I am NOT) would probably be good....should probably work on that too

it helped me a lot. my shrink knows a lot about nutrition, so she taught me the basics about healthy eating. also, she pounded into my head that food is fuel and to find other sources of comfort. i mean, it's still hard for me sometimes, i don't want to sound like it's always perfect & smooth sailing for me. a couple weeks ago, i ate a whole box of annie's mild mexican mac & cheese. and on tuesday, i had a delicious german chocolate bar. so i still give in to temptations, but the struggle isn't quite so bad now.

You know what? Not the healthiest choice. But it's done, so don't beat yourself up over it. And to be honest, you could have chosen worse options (Fettucine Alfredo comes to mind, a salad loaded with egg & cheese & fatty dressing...) It was tasty, it was good, so enjoy it for what it was. The best thing about food (for me) is the enjoyment - if you deny yourself that benefit, you've taken away the one good thing about that meal! So ditch the guilt, go for a walk tonight, and eat something healthier for dinner.

Weeeellll..if you look back to my mom thread then you realize therapy probably wouldn't be the worst thing for me  I'm just trying to get settled in with finances after my move and such - but it's in my future. I believe many people can benefit greatly from therapy.
Yeah - when I went rounds with my weight years ago - the week I'd "mess up" and eat the whole candy bar or something are the weeks I'd lose more weight - sometimes a jolt like that sort of kick-starts metabolism or something - doesn't let it get stagnant :p

All these just get me. Badly. I have this urge sometimes to go get Stouffer's French bread pepperoni pizza, a big assed bag of Nacho Doritos, and a six pack of beer. And consume every bit of it. I can. And have. Then I feel like I want to puke, of course. My most effective tactic lately is to put my hand above the waist of my pants. That helps to keep the junk outta my yap. Definitely, it takes work but you gotta be more positive. I know that sounds retarded but it's true. Dude, just passing up that donut is huge. Give yourself props. And you passed it up because you didn't want it. Maybe you'll have one tomorrow but right now you just don't feel like it. Cuz you don't want the consequences. For me it's become easier to pass them up because I just think, "I won't feel like sh*t in an hour". I tend to crash from sugar, esp if I've had it on an empty stomach.
Because sweets, and being full, both release endorphins, I suspect those of us who overeat tend to be depressed. I think nutritionists and trainers miss this very important psychological component.
On edit, I mean I can resist buying donuts and such but not when someone offers one free.

I've always been a binge eater. I can eat really well for weeks, but when I fall off the wagon, I start literally gorging myself with all sorts of junk. I also have problems with portion control. If a little food is in front of me, I'll eat a little bit. If a lot of food is in front of me, I'll eat a lot of food.
I think I'm finally getting a handle on things. I think you all are right, that depression has a lot to do with it. Since I've gotten divorced and have settled into the single life, I'm much happier. And I find making healthy food choices a lot easier. I have also started paying attention to my emotions when I overeat and I am seeing a pattern of either sadness or stress. Recognizing that helps me not to choose junk or binging. I'm still not perfect at it, not by a long shot, but at least I'm aware. I also make sure not to beat myself up if I do make an unhealthy choice. I just move on from it.

The thing is, I think the kind of foods you crave and the portions you crave, or anyone craves, are hard-wired (at least partly) into you so it is very difficult to work against them. You can fight it but as folks have said here, it is a constant battle. Most people seem to think it's worth the effort when they are successful.
I hope that whatever causes the cravings and such is found by scientists and there really is some way to make it easier on people to not desire these foods so much. Not all appetites are created equal unfortunately.

Right. It's about choice for sure - but sometimes there are things going on on a deeper level that negate the choice - or just go beyond simple choice. There have been times in my life where, yes, I could have chosen to not eat the entire roll of cookie dough - but prior to eating it I was not in a clear "should I or shouldn't I" state of mind.
I don't know how to explain it - and we are ultimately responsible for what goes into our mouths - which is why I'm now trying to make better choices - and stop using food for other things -- like rewards or something to buffer a bad situation.
Everyone is different - for sure. I mean Pickled Pig's Feet have to exist for someone - and it sure as hell isn't me!

I bet it is a brain chemistry thing. Everything else about the makeup of each human is so unique. It is not a stretch to think that certain people are wired to simply derive more pleasure from eating. Some people have no sex drive. Why not no eating drive ?

True. I have a very low sex drive - of course maybe that's because I eat so crappily
So if I don't get a better sex drive (and life) after all this work - I'm going back on Chocolate :p
Seriously though - I'm sure it is a brain chemistry thing. Which is why it gets me when people with no food problems bag on those of us who do. Like someone will give me a box of chocolate - when I've explicitly asked them NOT to - then they'll shrug it off saying, "just don't eat them..or just eat one" well - I don't work that way - I WISH it was that easy....food issues seriously suck.

OK, I passed up a chocolate cabinet (frappe or milkshake anywhere else) today. My Dad asked me if I wanted one and I said 'no'. I thought to myself 'yeah, I want one but I can't have it".
I have not had any sweets in 3 days now. I have such a problem with chocolate that it really is not funny. I could eat a 3 scoop hot fudge sundae from Friendly’s everyday and don't even get me going on chocolate éclairs from Greggs.
I had a Graham cracker with a cup of tea last night and that was my dessert. Thankfully the crackers are from Stop and Shop and taste like sawdust so I did not want to have any more.

Thanks, the only 'bad' thing that I had was a small bag of Doritos and I had half at lunch and half for supper.
God, I love ice cream.

Eh - half a small bag with each meal isn't that bad. You know, ice cream isn't a huge vice of mine - I'll only eat it if it's slathered in chocolate - without chocolate sauce of some kind I don't crave it and it doesn't appeal to me that much

when I was stressed out with Deb's cancer scare and the incident that caused my Mother's death. I was starting to work it off when my health issues worsened, which caused any weight loss issues to take a back seat. (Last time I gained weight was when I fractured my tibia in Feb.2003-The steroids in my meds caused that.)
When Deb & I met back in July 1991, I was 5'-2" 147 lbs., I am now 6'-1" 235 lbs. (5 lbs have disappearred with my current health problem) and I worry about what I eat now more than I did in the past...Though some of the weight was from the fact I grew taller later in life than most men (And the weight is possibly from the fact that Deb is a helluva good cook!!!)
I have never been a sugar kicker (ie-candy, gum & donuts) nor a chocolate eater (Chocolate gives me heartburn), but I like fruits & nuts (Currently eating some "Vietnamese Wasabi Cashews", which have a weird flaming hot taste, But are ever so addictive-As are my favorite food in the world: Jalapenos, Which I put on just about everything).
Deb is a Diabetic, So I eat what she eats to control her blood sugar. Add to her diabetic diet my salad & fish diet (Which helps to reduce the pain from the arachnoid cyst in my right temporal lobe of my very empty brain) and I am healthy, but "Doogie Howser" (aka Dr.Hamilton) says I still need to drop a bit of weight (About 20 lbs is all.)

As we all know by now  I gained about 20 lbs when I quit smoking this past Christmas. And that was in spite of joining Weight Watchers when it was happening. Since I've stopped WW, I still have this f-ing 20 lbs hanging on and it's making me crazy. I'm not GAINING anymore (thank God) but I really did have to go buy new clothes, etc. Now that I'm in graduate school, I fear it will only get worse as my time is so limited. But. One of my classmates and I have committed to working out in the school gym (30 minutes cardio and then 30 minutes yoga) three times a week. It's free and I have to do it. But I don't want to do it.
Interesting how so many of us are not sweet fiends. I can truly pass up a dessert plate- no problem. But that's probably because I just gorged myself on whatever I had for dinner. :(
Edited to add: YAY for those of you are are losing weight and being healthy. And double yay to Deanna for passing up that stupid doughnut. xoxo

Congratulations on donut refusal!
Just seeing the title of the thread caused me to go in the kitchen and eat some of the lemon cake I made the other day, so I guess I might as well have eaten a donut. I can't resist donuts, or ice cream if either of them are in front of me, but I am lucky that I am able to resist buying them. My real weakness is comfort food, like rice and pasta.
I don't really have a weight problem, but I am starting to feel flabbo, from lack of directed exercise. For me, it is hard to resist the temptaion to get cozy, and I can find a half dozen obstacles to getting out to run, or go to a gym, or swim. I garden, and clean, and heft my son up, and chase him around, but I know I need to take Yoga again, and get on an elliptical or bike.
Even resisting donuts and sweets, at my age won't keep the flab away. Must tone!
My vice is salty snacks. Pizza, nachos, chips, or anything where I can lick the salt right off of it.:distress:

Yeah - well I told myself that I was going to eat a donut. And I had one staked out. Then in a moment of weakness I went to get it - it was gone. A sign...for sure - that was the second time the donut I wanted was gone
So instead I had a fat-free yogurt w/ low-fat graham crackers - only 3 WW points. And it was just as good as a donut
Jannie - good luck with the gym and yoga!!

I used to keep instant oatmeal (not the super-sweet quaker kind, the health food store, or irish kind) at my desk, when I worked in an office, and then when the snacks would come out in the kitchen, I would have the oatmeal. It kept me away from coffee cake and donuts, and got rid of the mid-morning urge for sweets.
I worked as a sculpture model once, and the studio had donuts in the morning, which they would urge me to eat. I think thye had to keep adding more clay to keep up with my donut intake, since I was doing the same pose for weeks and weeks.

i passed up brownies and cookies today. i did, however, have 2 slices of prosciutto and a slice of muenster cheese. and some cheddar sunchips. blah.
i seem to be stuck at -13 lbs right now. i know i'm gaining muscle mass, because i can SEE it, but it's still frustrating.

Yeah - the weight on me is coming off way slowly - but I guess in the long-run that's better - and this week I start with the exercise.
And really I'd like to say I'm not focused on the weight number per se- but at this point I'm not feeling of seeing any difference - and that is frustrating. I know that will change once I start hitting the gym again...but patience has never been a strong virtue in me :p

Today is my "free day" - the day I don't count or keep track - but I still don't go overboard. I had a little bit of Chinese Food for lunch (in the past I would have eaten a ton - not a little bit).
No sweets though - it's too much of a slippery slope for me :p

ooh, my free day is tomorrow. chinese sounds really good ... but i think i'll have pizza instead. and good pizza, not pizza hut or anything. i've found myself adopting stevie's mentality about unhealthy foods - if it doesn't taste awesome, why would i waste the calories? anyway, what kind of chinese did you have?

That is a good philoshpy. I was really torn between pizza and Chinese - but I'm trying to be cafeful -so I went with not-so-horrible Chinese. I just went for Panda Express (which I actually really like) The Chow mein and non-fried things aren't actually too bad - I can splurge without feeling like I've totally blown it.
Damn..but now I want pizza

2 parties this past weekend. One was a surprise 30th for cousin - had pizza, salad & cake, but only 2 squares of pizza & literally a sliver of cake. I didn't overdo it & felt satisfied but not gross.
The second party was my own - we have a "goodbye summer" party every year. There was a lot of food there, but after I think about it, I really didn't eat much. I snacked a bit, I had one plate of food (chicken breast shishkabob, hot dog, potatoes...I think that was it.) No cake, instead I made rainbow ribbon jello, which was a huge hit (it's different colors of Jello layered in a glass 9x13 pan.) I did, however, drink about 30 beers (OK, not really. Maybe 25  )
But I threw most of that up the next morning, so I guess it evened out. :D Heeee. Yesterday was typical hangover food (ie: grease) but portions were small, and I'm back on track today.
As a side note, why is it that if I see a piece of fruit, I'll tell myself "oh, I already had some fruit today" and turn it down without a problem. But with snacks & bad starch, I could easily eat more that I should. What gives? I love fruit, but it doesn't tempt me like a big fat bagel & cream cheese or a bag of salt & vinegar chips. I wonder if in 20 years, we'll find out that Frito Lay put something in chips to make us crave more - like nicotine.

I think we crave sugar and fat from our days of hunting and gathering when such foods were not as abundant. If we had some extra calories that would save us on the days when food was more scarce. There is no scarcity these days.

Actually, I haven't been that hungover in a long while. It was pretty bad. At one point I debated yelling out "I think I'm dying" to Mark, but he wouldn't have cared, so I suffered in silence.
I just weighed myself - no loss, no gain. I'm planning on going for a walk later, elliptical & weights tomorrow & my first yoga class starts this Wednesady morning. :blob2:

Hey right - on broke even. I won't weight myself so soon after the weekend - and I did horribly this weekend. But I'm all back on track today - AND I found this amazing bread that is only 1 point per slice, rather 2 points per slice...
So that adds 1 point to sandwhiches - which is absolutely fine with me! I'm not using any flex points at this point - and my sister seems to think that my not using those is hindering more weight loss.
Also I start exercising today!

I bought a few of those 100-calorie snack packs at the market and CVS. The 100 calorie Doritos are pretty good and I had a Weight Watchers Smart Ones Chicken Enchilada Suiza dinner today and it was not too bad.
My Dad ate a friggin sundae in front of my yesterday but it was strawberry, which was not too much of a temptation for me.
I think that in my case going without sweets for a few days actually reduces the craving for it. Oh and I did lose weight, too. :blob1:

You don't have to use ALL your flex- just use some. It does make a difference. How many points are you eating a day?

Right now I'm eating 22 points a day...some days that seens fine - other days (like today) it seems like nothing. Sigh. Are you a current or former WW gal?

22 points isn't much, so definitely add more of them. Are you also making sure to eat all your points every day? That is so ridiculously important.
I'm former! I lost about 45 pounds on the program a couple years ago. Gained much of it back, due to my own laziness. I'm still its biggest cheerleader, though. One word of advice- if you're not already, visit the WW forums on their website. I don't know if they still are as good as they were, but when I was on the program, they were invaluable- for everything from recipes and meal ideas to encouragement.

Yeah - I lost 25 pounds through WW about 10 years ago (before points) and gained it back because I went back to eating nothing but crap
Anyway - yeah - I usually eat all my points each day - last week I was bad about it though because my dinners were so low in points - so yeah - last week was bad and I only lost half a pound.
I love WW - think it's a great program - it's just the kickin the pants I needed to start shedding some pounds
