Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham will release his first solo album in 14 years next month. Due Oct. 3 via Reprise, "Under the Skin" includes two tracks featuring the Fleetwood Mac rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. The other eight tracks find Buckingham generating all the rhythm simply via his own percussive guitar playing.

"It's something I've been interested in for a long time: trying to distill down the essence of that certain thing I do," the artist tells Billboard.com. "I want to still have it sound like a record, but very much in the spirit of someone sitting and playing guitar."

Buckingham wrote most of the material for "In This Skin" while on the road with Fleetwood Mac in support of its 2003 comeback album, "Say You Will," and looked to his own life for lyrical inspiration. "It gets into a more bare-bones look at what's going on with me after all this time," says Buckingham, who at 57 now has three young children. "I've finally gotten married and am slowly shedding the dysfunctional thing everyone in the band seemed to have emotionally."

The guitarist is also well into work on another new record, which will focus more on electric guitar-driven rock. Label execs initially asked Buckingham to include some of this material on "Under the Skin," but "I feel it has much more integrity by keeping it held back in the way it is. It seemed to be more truthful in terms of what the songs were saying and what I was trying to look at."

Eight songs are complete for the second album, due sometime next year, although Buckingham says he may re-record some of them with a yet-to-be-chosen producer once he finishes a fall tour in support of "Under This Skin." The outing, which is only his second solo trek ever, kicks off Oct. 6 in Atlanta.

Buckingham will be backed on the road by Fleetwood Mac percussionist Taku Hirano and guitarist Neal Haywood, plus guitarist/keyboardist Brett Tuggle. The set list is still coming together, but Buckingham speculates the show will be broken into three sections: "one with me out there by myself, another with the band but you hold a line in terms of the kind of material and the last section, where you'd rock it."

As for the status of Fleetwood Mac, Buckingham says he and the other band members are all up for future touring but unsure if any recording is in the cards.

"It's important that we end up in a place where we are good, as a group of people," he observes, "A place where all the politics are left behind for what's really real. Despite what has gone on, this is a group of people I'll know as well as anyone I'll ever know except my family. I've been through more with them than I've ever been through with my own family [laughs]. I'd love to see that continue. It's a matter of everybody somehow moving toward the center a little bit, and that means me too."

I think we should start a wagering pool on whether this becomes the next Fleetwood Mac album. I have every hope and desire to see "Under the Skin" sell gangbusters, but I think it is highly improbable, and I suspect the label's expectations are not sky-high either. And knowing Lindsey, "Under the Skin" probably cost a lot of money to produce. So if it tanks commercially, even more than expected, like "Out of the Cradle," the pressure will be on Lindsey to crank out an FM disc. Mick and John would probably be stoked to do it. And if they do get an outside producer, Stevie would probably be pretty gung ho too  .

My bet: new FM album in the fall-winter of 2007/2008 .

I don't know how he can say that out loud while keeping a straight face. I've listened to the tracks on his website, and--despite the instrumental production being kept minimal--the vocal production is still ridiculously overdone. If it sounds like anyone sitting and playing guitar, it's an alien, perhaps, or maybe one of those Gregorian-chanting monks that can distort their vocal chords.

I'm not saying the music isn't good, but it doesn't sound like somebody just having a quiet jam session. It sounds like that happened, and then he spent 8 months in the studio tinkering with the sound of his voice. The result is a somewhat awkward mishmash of studio trickery with sparse accompaniment.

It's a marketing ploy. The 3 of them must find those very useful in pushing their product.

Some people don't realise there are other forums outside of the Stevie forums

But anyway I agree with SillyDreamer about the production on the vocals. It is overdone, which is a damn shame.

You dont know how the other three new songs sound. You do not include Shut Us Down in your story. That one fits in his description perfectly, and although it has a band playing, DOR has that feel too.Even SGCYM is basicly a man strumming his guitar and singing. The play in the studio afterwards may be overdone in your book, but I think it's great how different he composes.

I must admit Gerald, I wish the new songs were more like Shut Us Down.
I don't really think all the vocals effects add that much, apart from It Was You: on that it makes the track.

Still you think these songs sound "stunning" as you said before.

I agree on the fact that on two songs, the overproduction is over the hill: CAD, which has the least voicemanipulation, but in this song it's disturbing: it's already too full. And in It was you it's not needed for the composition. In Show you How however, the overproduction IS the song. That's a typical-and I may say brilliant-lindsey playing tape-composition. Without the production you have nothing. But it IS a catchy hooky thing.

Me too dear, and you know that's my wish too. But I burnt a CD with the three new ones, try for the sun and DOR SUD and SGCYM and it's an amazing good mix. So let's pray for the titlesong, Juniper and Not to late be something with the SUD approach and we may look at it in a whole new perspective.
Let's face it: lindsey makes soloalbums where the songs need eachother. I think this one will be no different.

I still cringe at the idea that one or all of the remaining three new songs on the album might.

Being that so much of the conversations on this board relate back to Lindsey and FM, I thought this might be of interest to some folks here. Hope I didn't break some sort of "posting etiquette"
