Football coach runs onto field, decks opposing player
POSTED: 8:46 a.m. EDT, September 5, 2006

STOCKTON, California (AP) -- An assistant youth football coach was arrested on charges of felony child abuse after rushing the field and knocking an opposing player to the ground, police said.

Cory Petero, 36, of Riverbank, turned himself in to Stockton police Saturday night following a late hit that turned into a brawl, with parents and children from both teams fighting on the field.

The incident was recorded on videotape.
Referee Tim Winek said he had just called a penalty on Brian Wood, 13, a Stockton Bears player.

"There was a penalty on the play, and it was a late hit," Winek said. "The parent of the kid who got hit took exception to it. He came charging out onto the field."

Daniel Champion, who identified himself as Wood's father, told The (Stockton) Record that his son suffered bruises on his stomach and jaw from the assault.

The brawl erupted about 3:30 p.m. with less than a minute left to play between the Riveroak Redskins and the Bears.

Fighting continued for about 20 minutes, according to witnesses. No major injuries were reported.

Police are investigating.

Dude, I don't know if sports are getting more competitive, or if people don't know how to act, or if society if just getting more violent. This kind of thing happens all too often lately.

We had a guy come into the clinic. He's 36 years old, plays on an amateur hocky league. Apparently, he checked a 23 year old player & that player's father didn't like it. The father (who was in his 40's) attacked him after the game. He bit him on the side of the neck & wouldn't let go. Took 3 guys to pull him off our patient. This poor guy had a dark purple bruise approx. 4 inched in diameter on his neck, really gross & painful.

^^I just think it's so embarassing for these kids. Imagine that you're 13 and your dad is out there pushing some other kid around? I wonder what this guy is like at home? Did you see the guy's picture? Pretty trashy looking.

There's such a breakdown in community, people don't seem to care about people they don't know at all. I think people are more competitive and aggressive as a result of this.

My mom works for a company that runs several of the kids sports leagues, including 5,000+ kids in K-10 basketball and 3,000+ kids in 2nd-10th grade football. Their insurance premiums are through the roof because of the rise of psychotic parents. I actually really worry about the company handling a situation like this.

They just instituted a $25 fee for coaches to handle the cost of a background check and people are just freaking out over it. It's a one time fee for a new coach. Like, would you really have a problem paying $25 to ensure that none of these kids are being coached by child molesters or convicted violent criminals?

So the insurance company charges $25 back to the sports team to background check the coach? Or does each player have to pay $25 whenever there is a new coach. Either way, if my kid were on that team, I would have no problem with that fee.

Yeah, I totally made that sound confusing. The coach actually has to pay it himself- they have to fill out an application and then pay the fee for the background check.
