...ok, "best" is a misnomer...
MY FAVORITES is more like it.
For me:
1) Isn't It Midnight
2) Sisters Of The Moon
3) Go Your Own Way (dropped to #3 because it is actually a pastiche of many solos mixed together)
4) Book Of Love (yeah, great, just as he gets going the friggin' song fades)
5) (tie) I'm So Afraid, Murrow, Tango In The Night (the redundancy factor keeps that one solo from being ranked higher)
6) Blue Letter
7) I Know I'm Not Wrong
8) Eyes Of The World (the abrupt end drives me nuts, though)
9) Gold (yeah, the John Stewart song from his Bombs Away Dream Babies album)
10) Hot Summer Night (the Walter Egan song on Not Shy)

Over and Over (Live album) - I heart this.
Midnight Wind - It's just messed up...and I love it!
SOTM - It screams!
Only Over You - Another one not many like...but I love it to death.
Come - If I had a car...I'd crank this beyotch up...along with GYOW anytime I went anywhere.
Countdown - Breezy and fun.
I know I left out COUNTLESS others though.

Wow, I didn't know Isn't It Midnight's solo was so highly regarded by other people as well
My list (in no order)
Book of Love - Same as Chilli and Gerald. One of my favourite Linds songs and great solo to boot. I was actually thinking of adjusting the volume of this song when I was tabbing it to keep it loud until the end!
(BTW, if anyone has the chords for the chorus I'd appreciate some help. It'll save me having to figure them out :p )
I'm So Afraid(all versions)/Murrow/Tango In The Night - These are probably my favourite ones. Gotta love those moody solos!! ISA is the best of the bunch, though Murrow has some really nice overdubbed parts that make it really intense.
Go Your Own Way - It's just cool!
Go Insane - Does the interlude in the middle of the acoustic version count as a solo? I just love playing it, so I had to put it in.
Come - The Hard Rock fan in me rates this one highly, though I guess as I've listened to it more I like the live version better. Awesome song though, even if it is just a repeat of Tango and This Is The Time.
Second Hand News - Little more than a lick played twice but I could play this all day long. Just really fun. It may be short, but that just adds intensity IMO.
And lastly Oh Well - Only kidding Chilli! I don't hate it like you do, but he never sounds comfortable playing IMO. I've nothing against it really.

10) Mary Lee Jones I just adore the ****ty crapsolos from law and order....well, I just adore all of his ****ty crapsolos:laugh:
Ok, since you named a couple of Law & Order tunes, I just happened to have it with me here at work today, so I took a listen.
The cool thing about the sound of the "Mary Lee Jones" solo is that he recorded it backwards (flipped the tape over). Obviously, he didn't have either the same patience or technique as George Harrison when George did the same thing for the Beatles' "I'm Only Sleeping", but it does have an interesting feel to the solo.
But, after listening through, I heard one solo I forgot to mention in my previous list, which also made me think of another one and so on & so on...so here are my "Honorable Mentions":
11) Trouble (the SECOND solo is awesome...the first is wimpy)
12) Family Man (the guitar fills throughout are amazing...and actually what "make" the song)
13) You Make Loving Fun
14) Loving Cup (always been a fave)
I know some of you are mentioning live versions...I guess I should've been more specific. The ones I meant were STUDIO versions.

12) Family Man (the guitar fills throughout are amazing...and actually what "make" the song)
I never understood the hate that there is for this song on this board. It's not one of his best, but compared to some songs on that album (*cough*Stevie's*cough*) it's a great song. The Spanish guitar-esque feel is great, something Lindsey never really used anywhere else.

14) Loving Cup (always been a fave)
I'm such a moron. That one belongs in my top 5.
Since liveversions are not allowed: I'll try these:
Gift of Screws....weird...and HARDrock.
Twist of fate: just when you think: enough!!!, he rips off a screaming one over the screaming ones. Ilovitlovitlovit
Shuffle riff.

I can't believe no one said Play in the Rain Pt. 2.
I just go crazy during that solo.
PS. Agree with everything above.

me neither, hillhouse. i forgot that one too!In my list I forgot The whole GI-album. Unbelievably stupid. That play in the rain part 2 - solo is beyond discussion one of the best he ever recorded.

I know it is softer, but I have to do it because it is no less brilliant.
Gypsy
Tango
Big Love, Live
GDW - an odd choice, I'm sure, but if you think more about his guitar work in this, you'll see I am right. Very innovative, so perfect for the song. Wait, maybe it can't be called a solo....hmmmn...the vocals are really spare during his thing, does that make it okay for a solo? :p
In addition to what everyone has already said, of course. These are adendums to those choices.
My favorite, embarassingly obvious, is GYOW. It's not too noodly, it fits perfect with the song.
Also, just a note, though I love Lindsey's thing during SOTM, I love John's thing even more.
And Family Man is amazing. Oddly.
Umm... it looks like no one else said Live Big Love. To me that is the pentultimate. It sounds like three different guitars are going on. I would actually probably put it ahead of GYOW.
As an all around, not soleley Lindsey fan, I'm curious as to why others think the Big Love live solo isn't totally brill. I was mesmerized and dumbfounded the first time I saw/heard him do that. I'm still amazed, it really warms my cockles.

Running Through the Garden. A good solo in the middle of the song, but the outro solo is a killer!

I'm picking some "non record" solos as well...
I'm So Afraid (any version pretty much, but I'm partial to the one on The Dance)
The Chain (Love this solo...the record version and the Dance version)
Big Love (The Dance)
Go Your Own Way (just classic)
Sisters of the Moon (the record, and the ending on the Mirage tour video)
This is the Time (on Out of the Cradle...very weird, but cool)
Frozen Love (from buckingham nicks...an early indication of his style)
Murrow (love the SoundStage and SYW versions equally)
Book of Love (I agree Chili...its great...and easy to play)
Gypsy (on the extended version from The Chain box set)
Isnt It Midnight (very moody...love it)
Tango in the Night (Very much like So Afraid, but I love it still)
Eyes of the World (mirage tour version)
Silver Springs (from the Dance, the solo in the middle of the song has KILLER tone)
You make Loving Fun (classic solo in the middle, great tone)

Hello all---
When I'm in the mood, there's nothing better than a Lindsey electric freak-out solo ["I'm So Afriad," "Come," etc.], but I mostly tend to prefer the ones that are different.
Someone mentioned the solo at the end of "Bleed to Love Her," and I really like that one because of the countryish tone he used and all of the bends. Same thing goes for "Landslide"---what a perfect solo for a perfect song.
In fact, I think some of Lindsey's best solos appear on songs he didn't write. I love the solo/instrumental section of "Say You Love Me," which starts with a chiming electric 12-string refrain, then adds a 6-string electric solo over it the second time around.
I love the 12-string acoustic solo on "Gotta Get Away," too. It's wonderfully understated.
But one of my favorite Lindsey solos is for a song that appears to be considered by many fans to be a mediocre song, at best: "When I See You Again" from TANGO. That solo at the fade gives me chills just thinking about it...again, simple and beautiful.
We all know Lindsey can tear up the electric guitar at will for those extended, intense solos, but its on the types of solos I mentioned about where he really makes an impression on me. He's such a versatile guitarist, and it really shows when you listen to the various styles and sounds he's used over time.

But...none of those are solos. They're just hooks, guitar lines, riffs.

I'd say "When I See You Again" has a solo. It's really simple, but I'd still call it a solo. Whatever it's called, though, I love it. Best part of that song is the ending. I'll put up with Stevie just to get to Lindsey's verse and the "solo".

Umm...what is your definition of a guitar solo? Maybe I'm wrong, but I always thought it was the part of a song during which the guitarist plays a part that is featured prominently in the mix and that usually takes the place of the lead vocal in expressing the emotional content of the song [i.e. the lead vocal drops out of the mix and the lead guitar is pushed up in the mix].
"Bleed to Love Her"---extended electric solo at the end of the song
"Landslide"---short but sweet electric solo in the middle of the song
"Say You Love Me"---starts with 12-string solo during the first phrase, then repeats a second time with a 6-string solo over the 12-string part in the middle of the song
"Gotta Get Away"---12-string acoustic solo in the middle of the song
"When I See You Again"---acoustic solo at the end of the song
None of these are "hooks, guitar lines, riffs," which are defined as a guitar part that's repeated several times throughout a song. The descending guitar notes during the chorus of "What Makes You Think You're The One" are an example of a "guitar line." "Oh Well" is FULL of riffs. "Big Love" has a wonderful guitar line that runs throughout the song.

Guitar solo is typically an electric guitar part...distorted or overdriven. When you say "guitar solo" that's what most people think of. USually something like Van Halen's "Eruption" springs to mind.
I stand corrected on a few of your choices. I had forgotten about the 75 version of Landslide (I much prefer the Dance version, and its the one thats always in my head). I would say the Bleed to Love Her outro is not a guitar solo though, even though it may fall into the definition of one.

I think we just have different concepts of what defines a guitar solo. I don't think a guitar solo has to be played on electric guitar to be considered a guitar solo. To me, if it's played on a guitar, it's the main instrument playing at that point in the song, and it's not a short part/line/riff that's repeated several times during the song---it's a guitar solo.
As for something like "Eruption," that's a whole other animal. It's more of a solo guitar instrumental, in my opinion. The entire song is a solo! Technically, what's the difference between that and the guitar intros that Lindsey recorded for OUT OF THE CRADLE? I mean, he clearly called them introductions, but if they had some other name, they'd simply be solo guitar instrumentals, the only basic difference from "Eruption" being that Van Halen's bit is played with loads of distortion.
I stand corrected on a few of your choices. I had forgotten about the 75 version of Landslide (I much prefer the Dance version, and its the one thats always in my head). I would say the Bleed to Love Her outro is not a guitar solo though, even though it may fall into the definition of one.
You're right about "Landslide"---I was referring to the studio version, though, on THE DANCE, he is clearly trying to duplicate the solo from the studio version. As for "Bleed to Love Her," I can see your point---I would probably say it's more like "noodling" or ad libbing than an actual solo.
Speaking of great Lindsey solos, one of my more recent favorites is "What's the World Coming To." It really matches the style of the song.

The only song I don't like of Lindsey's is Miranda.
...hah!
GIFT OF SCREWS had a strange effect on me. The songs that I liked most when I first heard it---"Come," "Murrow," "Bleed to Love Her," etc.---came to be less exciting to me over time, and the ones I didn't like at first---"Miranda," "Twist of Fate," "Gift of Screws," etc.---became the ones that I listened to again and again. I think "Gift of Screws" is my favorite tune off the album right now. [As a completely unrelated aside, I wish Lindsey would release a simple acoustic-and-vocal solo version of "Say Goodbye." The clicking, pulsating effect on the GOS version really grates on my nerves. The clean version from LIVE IN BOSTON sounds much better, arrangement-wise, but I just can't stand Stevie's backing vocals, which just feel like a square peg crammed into a round hole on that song.]
Honestly, I think "Miranda" is a little repetitive, but it's so unusual. Plus, getting back to the thread topic, it has one of Lindsey's few slide guitar solos.
