Bob Dylan Says Modern Music Is Worthless
Reuters
LOS ANGELES (Aug. 22) - Bob Dylan says the quality of modern recordings is "atrocious," and even the songs on his new album sounded much better in the studio than on disc.
"I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past 20 years, really," the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.
Dylan, who released eight studio albums in the past two decades, returns with his first recording in five years, "Modern Times," next Tuesday.
Noting the music industry's complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, "Well, why not? It ain't worth nothing anyway."
"You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them," he added. "There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like ... static."
Dylan said he does his best to fight technology, but it's a losing battle.
"Even these songs probably sounded ten times better in the studio when we recorded 'em. CDs are small. There's no stature to it."

Um.
A) Bob is the man. The Man. Which doesn't necessarily make him right about everything, it just makes him a great lyricist and musician.
B) Wasn't he talking about the quality of recording? That is what it seems to me. Not the content, the actual sounds that result from modern recording equipment, and the resulting sound of the media it is presented on (CD's).
Anyway, I don't know much about recording, so I'm not sure if he is right about the quality and clarity, and how it sounded so much better in the studio. I would think he would know what he was talking about, having been in studios all his life. But you never know.
If he was talking about musicians, and music, I would agree, with notable exceptions. :D But then, my tastes are specific and exacting. I don't throw out a wide musical net. I mean, I do, but then I throw most of the catch back. Because it sucks, and annoys.

..."Well, why not? It ain't worth nothing anyway."
as an english teacher, i just died a thousand deaths. ain't... worth nothing... :distress:
as for the message... eh. i think he's referring more to the quality of and effort put into albums. i'm sure that he's very right about 95% of the albums that have slid off the shelves. a lot of popular music is manufactured to SELL and everything else suffers because of that.

Anyone who agrees with the idea that modern music is worthless is a) an old codger and b) need to find their glasses so they can read that article properly.
Dylan is clearly (to me anyway) talking about the quality of recordings and the CD as a format, not the music itself. Nowhere does he state that no one has written any good songs in the last 20 years (and he's released albums during that time period too and doesn't exclude himself). In fact in the last line he says the songs on his new album sounded much better in the studio than on CD. "CDs are small. There's no stature to it," he says. I bet he hates MP3s then. No iTunes for the Bobster.
This bit made me laugh though: "Dylan said he does his best to fight technology, but it's a losing battle." He didn't fight that technology when he went electric, JUDAS!!!!

I think in general he is spot on about the quality of sound, although it may be more technically advanced it certainly does lack the warmth of a record.

Spot on Amber.
Ok, I see I missed that vital piece of information. My apologies. However I will say that many artists are unhappy with the CD format and have been talking about going back to vinyl because it has a richer sound (even with the crackles and pops)
ps: each one of you will be an old codger someday too.

To be fair, although Dylan's vocals can sometimes almost turn into self-parody these days, overall I think he is one of the greatest singers of all-time. His vocal style is still being emulated. Sure, technically he's not a good singer, but some of my favourite singers can't sing too well: Neil Young, Lou Reed, even Tom Petty. People like Christina Aguilera may be able to hit the right notes and do all those vocal hysterics but Dylan has more heart and soul in that shaky, speak-sing, nasal twang of his that most of those warblers put together. (IMO of course)

No. There's a difference to being old and an old codger.
Also, we will never go back to vinyl. However a lot of older artists who dislike CD, like DVD. Neil Young for one.
A lot of people were excited about DVD-A and others were releasing stuff on DVD with 5.1 surround sound, because that format opened new possibilities for them.

you have a point. i'm not a huge dylan fan, but i like those other crappy vocalists you listed  , so i guess i can't fault dylan for his voice. there are songs of his that i love, like tangled up in blue, hurricane, and everybody must get stoned, but i don't see him as "the man," as other people do.

That said you did say "rock music is NOTHING like it used to be," which implied that you agreed with the headline of that article (that modern music is worthless). To me that sounds like a judgement on the quality of the music rather than on the format of the day.

Okay, I now see he was speaking more about the sound of a CD. I have to disagree on that too, it doesn't sound like crap and all jumbled. He probably has had a lot of hearing loss which makes it difficult to make distinctions in sounds.

lest anyone think Im a total prude, I know there is a difference between rap and hip hop and I dont mind some hip hop, I even have some rap albums
but as far as rap being "music" I just dont see it really, since a lot of rap is SPOKEN, and much of their music is sampled.....whatever happened to originality?

I dislike rap and most hip-hop, and "clubby" dance music. It's very cacophonous, plus I can't stand anything with a pulsating beat...it's like fingernails on a chalk board to me. Put me in a gay club, and I get real irritable, real fast.

Right on Mari. Also I don't get the sampling = lack of originality argument. The way some rap and hip hop artists use samples to create new pieces of music can be pretty amazing.
Also music is as varied and interesting as it ever was. No one should judge the music scene on what's played on mainstream radio either, that's a pretty small sample of what's going on at the moment. That said there are plenty of current pop tunes I love too.
Back to the point, music has not gone downhill, just Mr Dylan's hearing it seems. There's nothing wrong with the sound quality to my ears. Maybe he needs to invest in a better sound system.
Also if he dislikes CDs so much, I'm here to tell him that a lot of artists still put albums out on vinyl. The White Stripes even send all their review copies out on vinyl only.

personally, I would say that I agree that music has totally changed in it's intentions and the amount of quality music/artists is next to nilch, but that doesn't mean he can make a blanket statement like that. there have been numerous albums/artists with immense quality over the past 20 years. maybe not as many or as much as Bob would like, but that doesn't make it any less true. maybe he was just in a bad mood.

I think the problem many of us are having with his comment is that he's making a vast generalization. It's almost as bad as saying "it's all a bunch of crap." Just because it's different or new or innovative does not mean it's crap. And just because it's not on vinyl doesn't mean it sounds terrible.
I somehow doubt that Dylan has been really making an attempt to keep up with current music. Hell, I barely have. I rely on Sharon & Livia & others for info. I much prefer "older" music myself. But it makes me snicker when he seems to have the same attitude now that he was bitching about "older" people having then - you damn kids, you're all worthless, blah blah blah. The times, they are a changin' Bob.
BTW - I'd like to submit a few artists who I don't think have put out total "crap" for the last 20 years. Seriously - these sound terrible because they're on CD? I don't think so. JMO
Cyndi Lauper - Body Acoustic
Patty Griffin - Living With Ghosts
Lindsey Buckingham - Out of the Cradle
White Stripes - Elephant
Neil Diamond - 12 Songs

Codger, always have been, since I was little. And I have gone back to vinyl, actually! hehehe. Are we still friends? I'm just really picky...yeah...:p
I have to say, the thing I've noticed most about a good portion of mainstream music in my adult days, is that people don't seem to play their instruments as well or as varied or with as much innovation as they used to - obviously, there are exceptions - and also some could argue that 3 chord songs with the same beat all the way through are a style, that those people do it on purpose. Which may be true, but if someone could think of other more unusual, varied, and difficult music to play, wouldn't they? Mostly? To me a lot of mainstream songs sound very much alike, style wise, instrumentally.
Just saying. And no, I don't think all new music is worthless, and I know there are some people who still are good and unusual on their instruments - I just don't see them in very high proportion in the mainstream. Or barely at all. And, I don't like a lot of music anyway - but I wouldn't call it worthless. Just worthless to me. I find a few new things I like a lot, just not as many as most people.
But I thought it was funny that no one read that right, and did actually think he was talking about musicians, and not sound quality. And I think it's funny that even though several people in the thread pointed that out, people still keep "arguing" with Bob about the music quality.
As a side note, I have to say I'm not real happy about the Bob bashing. I share Stevie's awe of The Bob.

what is considered crap or not, I havent listened to radio in years...Except for 2 hours a Saturday night ("Headbanger's Ball") I don't watch ANY music related television. If I dont like a specific genre of music I just ignore it if possible, I'm sure someone will find something positive in a genre I might not care for and vice versa.
Nothing I listen to will be up winning popularity awards or be the musical basis for a 'reality TV music/talent show', nothing I listen to will be shown on late night talk-shows or become the entertainment for a Super Bowl (Btw, This coming Super Bowl's entertainment is Prince, who I do like.), nothing I listen will be followed by most here on the Ledge...and that is fine by me. To each their own.
As for the sound quality of CD vs. LP/Tape/etc., I prefer the alternatives to CD-I guess being around when CD's werent the main media has something to do with my opinion/musical media preference.

I don't blame you - they are extremely overrated. But I do admit that "Joshua Tree" is a really awesome album
I've never heard it. *ducks flying tomatoes* I've never cared enough to even look at a U2 album! The only song I have ever liked was The Sweetest Thing, back when it first came out. I thought the video was hilarious.

Well that's because factually if you state something like that you ARE actually an idiot ;)
No - I understand that there are people who don't like the Beatles...I don't understand them - because frankly they're the greatest band ever...but I digress...I would never state that Dylan sucks or anything because I have to respect his tremendous influence...and his legend status etc...

I have heard a good 8 U2 albums in their entirety, and I have to say, you are not missing much  As I say, "Joshua Tree' was U2's finest moment - it is actually one of my favourite albums ever....

I guess. The fact that you like Sophie B. Hawkins (right? you used to have her in your sig) cancels out the Beatle comment (barely) :p

I like some of their songs when sung by other people. Like when Michael Buble or Ella Fitzgerald sing "Can't Buy Me Love," or when Tina Turner sings "Come Together" or "Help." :D

That is correct.

I'm totally kidding, by the way. I absolutely love them - so I'd appreciate no F-words about them lol - I've come to terms with the fact that some folks don't like them....everyone has different tastes....and tastes don't make people idiots...

She was playing at a small club/restaurant in Rochester, NY. I stuck around after the first show and talked to her manager Gigi Gaston, then Sophie came out - Gigi introduced us but said that Sophie couldn't talk because she still had another set and needed to save her voice. But Sophie did say, "What was your name again?"

Lucky you!! I adore her. Although I have to admit, I am a little disapointed with her last album, which I don't like at all (give or take a few gems). She is one crazy lady though :D
And on another note - completely underrated :(

Which album, Wilderness? I didn't like that one as much either, but I also didn't listen to it as much as I should have - maybe I'll give it another go.
Did you know she released another one this week (at least in the state) - Live! The Bad Kitty Board Mix? And I agree - crazy and underrated

In your opinion. In mine, they have not had a decent song since "One Tree Hill" off the "Joshua Tree" album
Of course, in my opinion. I can't speak for anyone else. Although 22 grammy's pretty much speaks for itself.
Now the Beatles, there's an overrated band IMO. Another Beatles hater here :wavey:

Who cares about Grammys?!! The Grammys are just a popularity contest anyway. Britany Spears, Beyonce and Justin Timberlake have won more Grammys than Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty combined - does that make them better artists than the ones that have won none or only one or two - no.

Well, Fleetwood Mac were at there most popular when they won the Grammy for best album - I have always thought that although 'Rumours' is a great album, they should have gotten one for their best album "Tusk", which did deserve a Grammy. But it didn't because it did not have the same sales as "Rumours". And you can bet if that "Tusk" and "Rumours" swapped places in terms of popularity and sales, that "Tusk" would have won a Grammy and "Rumours" would have missed out...
My point is that Grammy awards don't go to who deserve them most - it goes to whoever is most popular that year or an artist who died. Whatever made more of a media impact....

the Grummies when Jethro Tull won best metal over ME-Tallica...Nothing against Jethro Tull, but metal they ain't.
Sure Nuff, the following year the Grummie official assclowns awarded ME-tallica the award for best metal...Hmmm, I wonder why
Personally I think that these days you really have to look for good music...its just not that readily available. Good music is not on tv and it sure as hell can't be found on popular radio anymore like it was, oh, say 20 years ago. Right Bob?
It doesn't mean its not there and it doean't mean that there aren't albums that are beautifully and artfully recorded. They exist, but man, you gotta hunt for it.

Back to the point, music has not gone downhill, just Mr Dylan's hearing it seems. There's nothing wrong with the sound quality to my ears. Maybe he needs to invest in a better sound system.
I think he also refers to how everything on mainstream radio is nowadays overcompressed to sound the same and you can't really tell the songs from each other especially if you're not tuned into what's hip. People have always removed flaws from the musicians' performances especially if they're releasing that particular performance (in the good old days they spliced the tape, these days they can do whatever they want), but there's no need to compress everything together into the same perfect homogenous piece of plastic or to use your autotuners to fix a slightly flawed vocal. Except when you want everything to sound the same and that nothing from your regularly scheduled programming has the chance of slightly irritating you. But then all this compressing and fixing takes a large part of humanity away from music; the flaws.
As for "modern music"; nothing prevents you from enjoying all the albums from the past because there surely is a lot to explore. You can still listen to something from 1967 or whatever and be just as stunned by it today as people were back then. And each year always adds something interesting to this musical library. Why draw the line between 'the new' and 'the old'? Because it's another human thing to do. ;)

That's very true! I didn't listen to radio for years because I got fed up with most of the mainstream stuff (not all of it;) ). And partly because of that I didn't listen to music as much as I used to, before.
Since I found some cool alternative internet radiostations, I've been discovering a lot more new artists and bands that I like... they're certainly out there. And let's not forget myspace, a great way to check out different songs from artists I'm curious about. So.. to find out about new artists, I guess it helps if you know the new 'technology' like internetradio etc.
Did you read in the several posts before this, and Bob's words himself in the original post, that he was actually talking not about the artists, but about the sound quality of music on CD's? Just wondering.
Nope. In all honesty, I did not. Sometimes I just never bother to, because when I read something that interests me enough to comment, I always get disappointed when I read through other posts and realize that maybe the whole thing was meant in an entirely different context, etc. So then I lose the chance to say what I want. So I just figure "ignore it, maybe no one will notice..." But yeah, serves me right. I still meant half of what I said anyway. :)

I agree and they did way to much of this to Bo Bice's album. He sounded like some vanilla singer, the soul of his voice was stripped away.

I don't think Bob is a great singer at all - that is not where his strengths lie. His lyrics are amazing, and have clearly influenced damn near every decent musician within that last 40 years. His songs like "Positively Fourth Street" and "Just Like A Woman" are incredible, so if you don't like his voice, check out other artists who sing Bob's songs - like The Pretenders version of "Forever Young" - incredible
I can't stand his voice. I can't get past it to listen to his music.
