View Full Version : Thrown Down and McDonald's

This morning I was at McDonald's gaining back the two pounds I lost last week.

To my surprise, I heard Thrown Down while enjoying my biscuit. I found myself singing along quite loudly. I adore that song! Why oh why wasn't it in the SYW tour setlist??

My favorite part is after she sings "you have nothing left to say" and takes in a deep breath. I also love how she delivers "you can dedicate your pain to him".

Has there already been a TD appreciation thread?

I love the.."weeelll you can dedicate your paiiiin to hiiiimm" also, but my favorite line IS the
"you say you're sorry, now you should walk away. But it's so overwhelming you have nothing left to say" that part just kills me.
Like..."after all we've been through..that's all you can F**KING say??!!!"
It's very Bitchy. Kinda like " I can STILL hear you saying you would never break the chain"..

I've never heard the breath after. I'll have to listen :)

I think there was on a while back, but I'd have to look. This is still, by far, my fave tune on SYW. The opening guitar notes make my heart ache when I hear them, every time I listen. And the lyrics are some of Stevie's best in recent years. (Recent meaning the past 10 years or so, btw)

I agree that this would have been great live. My theory is that they might have put it in for the second leg, but they really F'd up when they released it as a single. If you'll recall, they put out TD and Steal Your Heart Away in November 2003. Most stations that play AC went to their "all holiday music all the time" format around that time. Voila. It was trampled by Jingle Bells. :distress: They probably figured it wasn't getting airplay, so why bother. Stupid f*cking Jingle Bells.

Stevie doesn't enjoy performing new material in concert because she has that silly "can't throw in too much new stuff" mentality.

True, but neither was Come, Say Goodbye, Goodbye Baby, WTWCT, Red Rover.

Yeah, but she should have scrapped SYW and the lasso for TD in the 2nd leg.

ITA. But Come was obviously LB's new chance to show of his skills. Goodbye Baby made a good closer, and Say Goodbye seemed like a tune he felt he had to do live. WTWCT was OK, a nice little ditty, but nothing special. I much preferred SYHA. TD should have been put in when Rover was.

I Know I'm Not Wrong was put in after suggestion by Ledgies in Australia (Lux & Daryl, I believe?) when they met LB. Coincidence? Perhaps, but I doubt it. I'm trying to remember if they suggested Red Rover too.....

Stevie doesn't enjoy performing new material in concert because she has that silly "can't throw in too much new stuff" mentality. She had quite a bit of new material in the 'TISL' sets initially... "Every Day," "Sorcerer," "Too Far From Texas," "Fall From Grace," "Bombay Sapphires," "Planets Of The Universe"... I was pretty impressed. Of course, a couple fell by the wayside towards the last few weeks of the tour, but, hey, at least she gave them a shot!

She really should pare back though -- smaller venues, setlists with more obscure songs. She has such a loyal fanbase, she could easily do something like that.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D  Thrown Down should have been in the SYW Set List....I would have died :] Although the album is incredibly beautiful, that song is sooo amazing to me...though it's a hard choice, it's my favorite song on the record

Was it they? I thought it was Joe DownOnRodeo from Oz, because he had a I Know I'm Not Wrong T-shirt on & Lindsey saw it & looked at it funnily.

I know it was somebody! Lindsey didn't just decide, "Hey, I think I want to play I Know I'm Not Wrong!" for the first time ever.

I thought Cory Buckingham said that they tried this song in rehearsal, but it just didn't work??? I seem to remember that from the Q+A. IMO Peacekeeper and Say You Will for were too safe for the first singles. Neither of them had any yest. I think Thrown Down and Miranda would have been good first choices. Whats the World Coming to is very "radio oriented" IMO and I think that could have been a huge hit.

BTW...a little off topic, but I thought Goodbye Baby was a beautiful closer.

I did too. And I agree about WTWCT.

More on TD, I think it's one that really benefited from Lindsey's production. And his guitar work is fantastic on this one (as it is on all songs, but especially noticeable on TD).

Ya it seems like they always get gipped, when a new cd is released, it's not like
the old days the radio airplay last for 3 or more months, now Stevie and FM might be lucky to get a month of airplay, they have to compete with the crap tunes now days we hear on the radio. hahaha and jingle bells.
The only way we hear our Stevie/FM tunes is hell with the radio.is to keep our Ipods loaded or listen to muzak at wal-mart,k-mart,etc and Mcdonalds as you chow down a big mac.at lease they will be heard from that source..

you know...I can't listen to this song because of the "it's the same old thing" part. why? not sure.

I guess it's because I expect him to say "it's the same old TING" - with an English accent (and I usually love English accents). and I don't even know where I heard that, but it grates on my nerves.

that's totally cool - i didn't know that was how IKINW got on the setlist. it was a great add.

as for thrown down... totally should have been in the setlist. it was released as a single, fer goodness sake! same with steal your heart away. they're by far my two favourite songs on the album. i literally get goosebumps when she says "you can sit outside his door and wait... WEEEEELLLL you can dedicate your pain to him..."

damn. why the hell didn't they sing that live? can you imagine the dynamics it would have generated?

I agree about the singles even if I liked Say You will, it was optimistic at least. Peacekeeper though sounded a tired rehash of too many things. I would have preferred even as a first single Say Goodbye, or if they had courage enough, Miranda.

About the concert I'll never understand why they included WTWCT. It became kryptonite for me after the first three gigs I listened to. Miranda live would have been so great.

She does get points for touring with almost the same number of new songs as Bella Donna. But it's a shame that she felt she had to apologize for performing new songs, which she occasionally did on the TISL tour.

Regarding SYW single releases, I think Peacekeeper and Say You Will were the strongest contenders, at least the most commercial and accessible. Running Through The Garden, Thrown Down, and Steal Your Heart Away were all sent to radio. But all tanked.

I've watched and/or listened to several of the boots and I've thought, "don't apologize, Stevie -- just sing it." Of course, from her vantage point... standing on stage, watching people run off to get another beer or use the restrooms during the unfamiliar stuff... maybe one gets the feeling that they should apologize for not keeping people near their seats.

I found it trite - or at least the sentiment in it. I also found the music boring as the lyrics - everyone's gone to the moon, what's the world coming to.

But, I will say this, it was better live and that is a kudo to him.

Finally, many like the song, so what the hell do I know :)

Murrow is masterpieceful. I like Lindsey's SYW work a lot, the two I don't listen to much are WTWCT and Say Goodbye. (to jingleplink whispery). I think the rest is GREAT. I can't decide if I like Miranda or Murrow or Come best. First it was Miranda, but now I think it's Murrow, and Come is always tied. Plus, if you think about it, Murrow's message is more subtly and artfully expressed. WTWCT just sounds like my lamenting grandma.

i think miranda is my favorite out of all of those, but murrow beats come (heh.). i like say goodbye, but i hate the album version. i think it's much better live, and not in a shippery way ... it's just better slowed down, i think. i agree that SYW is a great album. y'know, a lot of people have made those lists combining SYW tracks with tracks from in the meantime, and although i've heard ITM, i don't think i'd add anything from it to syw, except maybe friend. i'm just not in love with any of it. this is subject to change upon subsequent listenings, though, as i tend to like things more the more i hear them.

Thrown Down as a the first single would have been Brilliant! Her voice sounds great, and the lyrics, music, and production are amazing. I remember when Peace keeper came out, and it was on aol's first listen, and bieng played on the radio first, and there were these messages, and coments saying "now is not the time for Peace, blah, blah war" (obviously, they werent really listening to the lyrics, :take no prizoners, only kill. It was considered BY SO MANNY HORIBLY IGNORANT PEOPLE "un-american" at the time to even say the word "PEACE". so I dont think many people gave it a chance.because of that. I even had a few people I tried to personally play it for tell me "we dont want to hear any thing that has peace in it.. They shouldnt make songs against the war" GOD I hate ignorance. That song had nothing to do with that. (But hey,I think they should have known to start it off with a stevie single anyway.)

No, it's not, because Lynda's lips are too thin, and her eyes are smaller. Don't make me have this conversation again. Also, Lindsay's eyes are bigger, too! Plus, if you watched the show, you would see that Lindsay is a much better actress, and totally looks more deep and empathetic. Swear.

Running Through the Garden was sent to AAA (Adult Album Alternative) radio at the same time as Say You Will. Radio has the option of playing one or the other, but they usually don't play both. Most stations chose Say You Will. Both songs appear on the same promo CD single.

I could eat pizza every single day. Cheese, pepperoni & shrooms are my fave, but steak pizza, breakfast pizza, chicken pizza...who am I kidding, I'll eat anything.

Carrie, I hope you two can work it out. :(

yummm, cheese, pepperoni, shrooms, sausage, diced tomatoes ... the list goes on and on. i actually don't like those specialty pizzas - except chicken pizza. i think pizza and i are getting back together on sunday for a temporary rendezvous ... i've decided to institute a "free day" into my diet so i don't kill myself.

Yes. Yes we do. And please post it in one of the food threads in Chitchat so people can stop accusing me of being the only one who posts about food. :)

I think it is a fantastic song in every respect, & I am really very hurt that you do not think so.

I'm sure Lindsey would be touched by your loyalty David.

RomyNo seriously. How come you don't like that one? I think the lyrics are Zevonesque in their level of corrosive facetiousness: as I listen to the song, my Irony-Meter swings all the way over to the red. Think of the clever subversion of expectation in a line like: "I can come right out and think just what I say." And the refrain--"Everyone's gone to the moon"--is as savvy a pronouncement of smirking at the headholders as anything in Randy Newman's catalog.

Musically, it's a deft chord progression, alternating major & minor in the old ballade style, that resembles the approach on "Steal Your Heart Away," & gives the stance a very subtle emotional core. The lead & backup vocals are well recorded & even inventively arranged. I think the track has true panache. To me, it's classic Fleetwood Mac (even though we haven't figured out just what "classic Fleetwood Mac" is on the rumours ledge).

It's a blunt arrow IMO. His irony doesn't bite in this case, it's subtle emotional potential drowns in the too clever melody. There's all his reserch to perfect form that sometimes brings him to an annoying academism. The text works, the music works, but not together, I think.

What the heck? The song is a compact overly mac-character, hooky poprocksong with Monday Morning-quality. How can one not like it?

If people don't like it, I want to hear why.

So just for replying, I'm going to post some Milstein playing heavenly Bach for you. But first I must upload it.

Stevie doesn't enjoy performing new material in concert because she has that silly "can't throw in too much new stuff" mentality.
That whole debate about how much new stuff is too much is a debate that's raged through the rock circles, not just with Stevie. I interviewed Tommy Clufetos (the drummer for Rob Zombie), and he immediately agreed with me that it IS a subject for debate.

Normally, I might sprinkle in a few new songs in among the familiar hits, but the way my job at the newspaper has been going, if those were "songs" or "albums," I'd probably be using mostly the newer stuff because I'm very proud of the work I've been doing of late.

Yes. A missed opp. for sure. They should have led with Thrown Down as the lead single or the second one. And they should have pushed Destiny Rules for the release of the documentary.
Absolutely. I sang "Destiny Rules" a cappella at a karaoke night and got a HUGE reaction to it. It also should have been released for karaoke.

If I could get away with it, I'd do "Fall From Grace" segued into "Destiny Rules," ala the "Outside The Rain"-"Dreams" seque.

I'm so glad you pointed out that part in Thrown Down...'you have nothing left to say" . That's such a key part of the song....
Like in Destiny Rules....."the coastal line in glittering...like a diamond snake in a black sky"....it just gives me the chills sometimes....or "sometimes I walk by and I look up to your balcony just to make sure that you were real...just to make sure that I can still feel you"....that's pretty deep thinking on her part.

I had forgotten about this old thread. Wow, we were talking about this over a year ago. I've heard Thrown Down in the grocery store, but not McDonalds.

No official Thrown Down remix. But the TISL outtake (Wall of Sound) had so much production on it that it could have been a remix.

I did too. And I agree about WTWCT.

More on TD, I think it's one that really benefited from Lindsey's production. And his guitar work is fantastic on this one (as it is on all songs, but especially noticeable on TD).

lindsey's work on thrown down is exceptional
i think it's one of his best absolutely
especially when you compare the TISL version with the SYW version

awesome awesome song!
