I'm signed up to get "breaking news" updates from CNN.com as stories develop, and about five minutes ago I just recieved two updates in a row. Thinking it was something newsworthy and relevant, I opened them. I was really disappointed to see that the media is still getting it's rocks off over JonBenet Ramsey. So they arrested a suspect in the case...who cares? There are so many unsolved homicides in the Twin Cities area, and several involve innocently murdered children. Where's the media frenzy for those poor kids? The five year old girl who was killed by a ricocheted bullet that went into her house through a wall while she lay on the living room floor watching TV? Not a word on the news since the day it happened. Another example is a really bad neighborhood in north Minneapolis, where two people were shot dead in two days...at the exact same address (the two homicides were not related). Did anyone hear about it outside of local news coverage?
Of course you didn't. The media saves the big stories to spread around the country. You know, a murder that happened almost ten years ago. The important stuff.
It's reminiscent of the Katrina disaster. A white couple walking up the street with a box of food "discovered" it. A black man wading through flood waters while holding food over his head was "looting."
It's just frustrating to me that while we can be so advanced in some areas, we still are seperated by class and color, which to me is barbaric.
