I know there is coming a new album, kind of unplugged, so this idea is discarded by now, but just for fun..

If Lindsey decided to record an album with other singers or players, all duet songs, a la Sinatra, new or old songs, never mind.. who (yeah yeah, besides la Nicks or Christine) would you choose?

I would like him to sing or play with...

Eric Clapton (a guitars dueto should be interesting..)
Annie Lennox
Carly Simon
Debbie Harry
Bob Seger

Lindsey and Kate Bush definitely gets my vote. Do you know if he is aware of her music?

I'm more of a Gary Louris fan than Mark Olson, Gerald.
How can you not love Gary after Sound Of Lies?
I can't wait for his solo album, although I want the long-promised Olson/Louris album even more.

Me too, Sharon. I just think those voices would fit like a GLOVE.

btw, THE NEW GOLDEN SMOG IS DIVINE.

i'm sure. didn't they share the same fairlight equipment back in the 80's?
And compare running up that hill with the original big love. He must have been a big fan.

I know :D All the Golden Smog albums are though.

I think Lindsey should also work with someone like Jim O'Rourke, whose work with Sonic Youth and Wilco is particularly awesome. Or since we were talking about them on Chit Chat, The Flaming Lips. They do use the "Lindsey Buckingham sound" on their album Clouds Taste Metallic, or so they say on the documentary Fearless Freaks. Why not get the real thing?

O'rourke, excellent choice. put him on my list too. Flaming lips, i like them but haven't picked their latest up yet.

(ofcourse i have all golden smog-albums. They're priceless.)

Are we flying to the states in october?

I hope so. I'm pretty much waiting on a friend at the moment and I also have to sort things at work, but hopefully yes. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I will!
For me it's still very uncertain, even unlikely, but If the dates are at the right moment of an reasonable travelprize.........

I don't know anymore david. but I recall that in the early 80s the ridiculously expensive fairlightequipment was flown in by different artists to experiment with. And that some artists contacted eachother through management I suppose, to exchange gear. So the link Peter Gabriel-Kate Bush-Lindsey Buckingham has always sounded logic in my ears. Go insane must have catched the ears of these artists too back then. Few people in the world -in the major league I mean- were so soundexperimental as these three mentioned artists. I still believe that through these contacts Bush and Gabriel worked together.

Well they did, at the very least, sign the same Fairlight.
I remembered that Todd Rundgren was an early user of the Fairlight, and when I searched for that info, I found this article:
http://www.ben.com.au/articles/40/0C041F40.asp

Fairlight to auction unique keyboard to aid human rights charity

Australia-based professional audio console manufacturer Fairlight and global human rights organisation Witness are to auction a true collector’s item – a vintage Fairlight CMI keyboard signed by 43 worldwide artists that helped reshape music over the past three decades including Peter Gabriel, Bono and Elvis Costello.

All proceeds from the auction will go to Witness to support its use of technology to fight human rights abuses. Witness uses technology such as video cameras to document human rights abuses around the world and present the evidence to governments and media organisations.

“We are very pleased to partner with Witness and honoured to contribute to their important work,” said John Lancken, Fairlight CEO. “Fairlight has spent the past three decades bringing new technologies to the hands of talented and innovative users. Witness too is dedicated to leveraging the power of audio and visual technology to address our world’s most pressing issues. Together, this auction will provide more tools to the frontlines of today’s crucial social battles and strengthen the voice for human rights.”

Veteran musicians, composers and producers that used the vintage Fairlight CMI Series III keyboard from its early years have signed each white key. The keyboard is mounted and will be auctioned in public to music aficionados. All proceeds from the auction will go directly to Witness to support its efforts to equip and train local organisations around the world to document human rights injustices.

Artists and producers whose signatures appear on the keyboard are Lindsey Buckingham, Nick Rhodes, Stuart Copeland, Elvis Costello, Mike Oldfield, Hans Zimmer, Roland Orzabal, Barry Gibb, Steve Winwood, Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson, JJ Jeczalik, Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox, Boris Blank, Midge Ure, Alan Parsons, Geoff Downes, Brian Wilson, David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Sir George Martin, John Paul Jones, Trevor Horn, Jim Kerr, Brian Eno, Jean Michel Jarre, Howard Jones, Herbie Hancock, Thomas Dolby, Keith Emerson, Mark Mothersbaugh, Bono, Jan Hammer, Todd Rundgren, Stevie Wonder, Iva Davies, David Hirschfelder, Chick Corea, Daryl Hall, Mike Rutherford, Billy Gibbons, Peter Gabriel.

Peter Gabriel, co-founder and chairman of Witness, expressed his gratitude to Fairlight and personal dedication to the project. “I am deeply honoured that Fairlight has selected us as the non-profit beneficiary of the auction. There is great synchronicity between Fairlight and Witness, since we are both committed to using technology in innovative ways. We look forward to working hand in hand with Fairlight to make this a successful auction and a strong partnership for the future.”

Your welcome, but it isn't clear, form that article whether they originally used the same keyboard, or just that they used the same series. In any case, they all signed the same one.:)

But more on that later.

It wasn't THAT expensive. I'm sure Lindsey had his own Fairlight, and so did these British musicians and very likely most others mentioned in the list. Now if we were talking about a Synclavier (about ten times more expensive than a Fairlight), it would've been different. Only people like Stevie Wonder could afford those.

I presume (and it's half guesswork) the use of Fairlight models in Lindsey's and Kate's music went like this:

1979 - Fleetwood Mac are among the first artists to receive a Fairlight (CMI Series I) but I don't think they used it then, or at least not in the way that they would be used later on. Other digital equipment such as varispeed (which Fairlight didn't certainly offer in its earliest stages, if at all) had been recently invented for studio use so those were used instead.

1980 - Kate releases Never For Ever, one of the first studio albums by a major artist where a Fairlight is used extensively (CMI Series I or II).

1981 - Law And Order comes out, but there's no mention in BLA of Lindsey having used a Fairlight on it.

1982 - The Dreaming, Kate's masterpiece (IMO) is released and again features the Fairlight heavily (most likely CMI Series II this time). No idea if a Fairlight was used on Mirage.

1984 - Lindsey finally gets on the Fairlight train now that it is de rigeur. Go Insane probably features CMI Series IIx, the latest model at that point.

1985 - Hounds Of Love is released and most likely has Fairlight CMI Series III on it.

1987 - Tango In The Night features CMI Series III with its 16 bit sampling rate throughout.

1992 - Many other musicians have already either moved on to cheaper keyboard/sampler-systems or workstations. Lindsey still keeps on using his old CMI Series III. ;)

I have my doubts that Lindsey ever really played these guitars.
Dude! He sampled the ORCH5 chord way before Stravinsky did!

And, Pat Metheny...he had one, as well. (plus, he was the company's "poster boy"...he was featured in their ads in Guitar Player magazine for a couple of years).

How come Lindsey never used a Roland EP-10?
