i like "do you realize?" but overall, they're a little too soft-art-rock for me.

I feel almost this thread is for the benefit of me, because I adore the Lips and my obsession had re-emerged with the release of their new album, At War With The Mystics (click on the chart in my sig and you'll see they're my most played band).
I'm a long time fan, I first saw them live in the mid 90s.
If you love Yoshimi you definitely have to buy The Soft Bulletin, which IMO is their masterpiece. I also love their rockier stuff like Hit To Death In The Future Head, Transmissions From The Satellite Heart and Clouds Taste Metallic - all great!
Happy to see other Lips fans here. It warms my heart. :D

I have got quite a few of the groups albums at work, I just took home "Yoshimi" to listen to a couple of nights back. Now that I know I love them you can be sure I will be getting the other albums
My friend however did tell me that the new album is on the boring side - he did rave about "The Soft Bulletin" though.....

i loooooove the flaming lips! they are the BEST live. wayne crawls into an inflated bubble and rolls over the crowd. i've had a few dreams where i shared that bubble with him....
yoshimi is a great album, Do You Realize?? is hands down my favorite track from that album. the new one is good but i'm not obsessed with it. the Hit and Clouds albums are probably my favorites - they're the ones i've listened to for years and years and years. Satellite Heart got me started on them, but i lost that album almost immediately and never bothered to replace it.
mmm. wayne...
i have band friends who were thisclose to getting me onstage to dance with the band at langerado but that didn't work out. i'm fine with that. i had a better time staring at wayne from the front than i would have sweating my ass off in a furry costume, waving a flashlight for two hours. wayne...

The new album is patchy but there's still some fantastic stuff on it: The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song, The WAND, It Overtakes Me, Free Radicals, Haven't Got A Clue, they're all top stuff.
I would recommend listening to The Soft Bulletin, then Clouds Taste Metallic. If you like Clouds then try Transmissions From The Satellite Heart and At War With The Mystics. I warn you though that their 1980s stuff is very different. They were hugely influenced by the Butthole Surfers back then, and it's very trippy, weird and punky. Their first few records aren't much cop but from In A Priest Driven Ambulance on it's pretty solid stuff.
You should check 'em out live too. Now that is an experience.

There are some really heavy lyrics on "Yoshimi" - like this one;
"Do you Realise that everyone you know will die?"

I love you xxxmx! I've had two opportunites to meet Wayne and both times fate has stood in my way. I guess I too am meant to just stare at him from afar.

They have an upcoming gig at the OKC Zoo Amphitheatre which will be sold out.

Yeah, a lot of people are disappointed by AWWTM. I kinda like the first song though, it does grow on you and it's awesome live. The WAND is really cool too. That's nearer the end of the album.

anyway, I LOVE their last album, but it's the first thing of them I know. So I didn't have anything to compare it to, yet.

Mari, have I told you lately that you ROCK! :D
I thought that video was a pretty funny take-off of the Bob Dylan video too.
Anyway, yeah the new album is pretty different to The Soft Bulletin and then that's quite a bit different to their grunge-era stuff. And then there's their really weird, out-there 80s stuff. They're a band that have certainly changed a lot over the years, that's for sure.
I can post some MP3s if you want to hear some of their other stuff.

Okay, I think I went a little crazy and I don't know if anyone will be bothered enough to download them all but I think they're all pretty cool so I'll put up all the links.
Here's some recent stuff for Gerald.
Firstly, my favourite song off At War With The Mystics, The W.A.N.D.:
This is a recent b-side called The Gold In The Mountain Of Our Madness. It's absolutely fantastic, I can't understand how it didn't end up on the album:
And this is a very different, very beautiful piano version of their recent hit The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song:
Earlier stuff:
Now this is cool. This is a very rare stereo mix of the first song on their experimental album Zaireeka. If you don't know about it, well it was released as four CDs which you had to play on four separate stereos and try to synch up somehow to get the full experience. Pretentious? Probably. Awesome? Definitely! It's called Okay, I'll Admit That I Really Don't Understand:
Finally two earlier pop songs they did from their breakthrough album Transmissions From The Satellite Heart from 1993, Turn It On and their 'novelty' hit She Don't Use Jelly, and one from Clouds Taste Metallic from 1995, which is a little nearer to their current sound.
Turn It On:
She Don't Use Jelly:
Placebo Headwound:
I was going to upload their version of Black Sabbath's War Pigs but I stopped myself, as probably no one is going to download these. Sorry, I did get rather carried away. If you do download I hope you like them, let me know! :D
Edit: downloads removed. BUY all Flaming Lips' albums now!

http://www.sendspace.com/file/rn52q0
My suggestion for a tracklist would be pretty much in the order I posted them from most recent to the oldest track (starting with The WAND and ending with Unconsciously Screamin')
These were in the original post but I've just moved them here so not to overwhelm: two songs from when Jonathan Donahue was in the band. He left and formed Mercury Rev, another great band. Unconsciously Screamin' from 1989's In A Priest Driven Ambulance (one of Greg Dulli's all-time favourite albums apparently) and Hit Me Like You Did The First Time from Hit To Death In The Future Head from 1991:

1. The W.A.N.D.:
2. The Gold In The Mountain Of Our Madness
3. The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song
4. Okay, I'll Admit That I Really Don't Understand
5. Turn It On
6. She Don't Use Jelly
7. Placebo Headwound
8. Pilot can at the queer of god
9. War Pigs
10. Hit Me Like You Did The First Time
11. Unconsciously Screamin'
Of course I knew the brilliant "jelly". I'm freakin'out totally On Turn it on. What a masterpiece popsong. Sounds familiar. I'll check my cd-collection.

Four wonderful songs, quite different and the sound of them need some more time for me. I can't say too much about them although Nr 2 has real heartbreaking lyrics.
After that, I drove quite some miles today, These tracks build up into total headbanging dangerous driversnoise. What a joy to hear False singing sqeeking pounding, racing guitarnoise with supermelodic voicelines although the voices -one way or another -are all insecure and fragile. Yay! :xoxo:  Sounds like you like their earlier rawk stuff more, but's that's cool. The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots and At War With The Mystics lean more towards a pop sound, although there's a slight return to a guitar sound on the new album.
I adore Dinosaur Jr btw, one of my favourite ever bands! I saw them on their reunion tour last year with Lou Barlow.
I think Okay, I Admit That I Really Don't Understand from their experimental album Zaireeka is pretty awesome though, although it's definitely the most challenging of the tracks I posted. There's a huge krautrock influence on that track, in fact I think the band are big Can and Neu! fans. The drums are amazing, he's a pretty fantastic drummer Steven Drozd.
Did you like When You Smile?

Oh no, I love those first four tracks alot! But these kind of songs need some time in my ears: not because they're challenging, but because I don't know yet if that quality sticks after alonger time. They're tricky production and soundwise.
Did you like When You Smile?
Yes I do. That drummer, like in OKAY etc dances like an elephant in a porcelainestore without breakin' anything. WMYTYTO-ish!!!
Hey, why do these threads always end up being just you, me and Mari.
Because Gaius is less active over here!

Woah, The Flaming Lips thread resurrected from the dead once again!
I pretty much suspect we have this thread to ourselves though, Gerald.
Will any other Ledgies venture into it? I doubt it!
Here's another stereo mix of a Zaireeka song, it's pretty cool too.
It's called Riding To Work In The Year 2025 (Your Invisible Now):

Sharon, I'm listening to Do You Realize right now, love it. Vaguely reminds me of something?! I can't really pinpoint what though. Uh, something George Harrison, I think.
