In their defense, a lot of us were saying the same things about Don Henley last summer.

I, on the other hand, am totally bummed that Stevie probably won't be at Darien Lake on Tuesday.:distress:

I don't think they really "hate" here. I think the TP fans have many of the same issues Mac fans do in that the setlist doesn't change much or at all. And they feel that Stevie being there cuts out the opportunity that TP will play something out of the blue or unexpected. Something they haven't heard in years or at all since it's his 30th anniversary. They just want Tom to dig deeper into his catelogue. Sure some don't like her and that's fine, but really, it's not like she's there for half the show singing away. And she's singing TP songs. And there's plenty that are standing up and saying they liked her being there.

F*** them! I hope Stevie doesn't continue touring with Tom Petty just so those people won't have the priviledge and honor of seeing her in person. His fans are really weird...i mean, how in the hell could you not love Stevie!!??

we were all bitching (at least i was) about the tour with don last year, but i think this is completely different. she actually only sings (noticeably) on three songs, all of which are his - at least in part. if don was hanging around last summer to simply duet on a few songs, i may have actually looked forward to his presence.

and tom hasn't been messing with his setlist all tour. grrr, why do i feel like i need to defend Homegirl? ;)

Obviously, you didn't bother to actually read the board before posting this drivel on here. If you actually look at what people are saying, the overall message is "We like Stevie, but - since this may be Tom's last tour - we just want to see the boys, not the boys AND Stevie Nicks." Even the person who said "BEAT IT STEVIE" goes on to explain that he/she thinks Tom might mix up the setlist more if she isn't there - the implication, of course, is that her presence obligates him to play "Stop Draggin My Heart Around," "Insider," and "I Need to Know." And without her, he can replace those with something else.

Also, for every comment saying "I hope she isn't there," there's at least one more saying "I hope she is."

F*** them! I hope Stevie doesn't continue touring with Tom Petty just so those people won't have the priviledge and honor of seeing her in person. His fans are really weird...i mean, how in the hell could you not love Stevie!!??

Seriously? Just because you worship the ground she walks on and are of the opinion that her **** doesn't stink, doesn't mean that other people - especially fans of another band - are obligated to agree with you. And there are plenty of people out there who would find you weird for loving Stevie.

Good God I can't believe I'm agreeing with you on something ;)

But yeah - saying "F**k 'em?" ...a bit harsh. I can totally understand the frustration some Tom fans might have

And I've been a rabid Stevie fan for years now - I've come to terms with the fact that not everyone likes her, in fact there are many people who can't stand her (just like with EVERY artist). And no one HAS to hate someone - they just sometimes to. I don't HAVE TO hate Mariah Carey, I just do (with a fiery passion) - and there are people who feel the same way about La Nicks. It's a fact of life - there will always be people who don't like/hate people that you happen to like/love. This life lesson brought to you by the letter T.

I think it's great that Stevie fans get to see her this tour - but I can totally understand the Tom setiments as well :o

Yea, my first outburst may have been a bit harsh, it was just my initial reaction to the Stevie backlashing on the TP forums. Although most people are saying they do like Stevie, the ones who don't, really don't, and i dunno, i'm just viewing it from my own Stevie fan perspective and not a Tom Petty fans' perspective.

Not saying they have to love her, but they don't have to hate her either...

If you actually read the Petty message board, you'll see that they DON'T HATE HER. There's a lot of love for Stevie on those boards, but the comments are being taken out of context.

Do your homework before you make judgements.

Personally, I wish Tom would stop hogging Stevie's setlist. I mean c'mon, he sings with her on like four songs, and three of those are just harmony. The other 85% of the concert is just Tom doing a bunch of songs without Stevie. Stevie doesn't even do any of her own songs on stage! I know Tom's a special guest and all but that's just freakin' ridiculous!

Aren't there any rock stars you hate?

This lambasting of Tom Petty fans for--gosh! daring to speak on a message board devoted to Tom Petty!--is solipsistic. A lot of people hate Stevie Nicks & Fleetwood Mac. A lot of my very own friends & family hate Stevie Nicks & Fleetwood Mac. I'm sure the same is true of everyone. Are you going to work yourself up into a hissy-snit because of it?

Who cares. It's just a small handful of die hard Petty fans, who would probably say that about "anybody" that toured with him. I do have to laugh when I hear them say things like "you know that the set is always going to be the same when Stevie's there." No guff. Us Stevie fans have had the same set list since 1983

I remember people bitching about Sheryl Crow on this board whenever she popped out on stage at a Stevie concert. It's all the same type of reaction. I don't expect everyone to love Stevie and I certainly don't care what Tom's devoted fans say about her on their fan forums. All I know is when I went to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers a couple of weeks ago - the crowd went ape **** for Stevie and so did I. We all had a great time and I wouldn't have gone if Stevie wasn't going to be there.

08-13-2006, 05:25 PM
Well, on one hand, I can see the Petty fans' point. What if it was Stevie's last solo tour, would you want Don Henley there? Not exactly. Now if Lindsey showed up, that would be different. Different strokes for different folks, not everyone loves Stevie like some of us.

And without her, he can replace those with something else.Well, there's nothing stopping T.P. and the boys from swapping out the other eighteen songs in the setlist, even if the above three remain in place while Stevie's there. I doubt she's holding them back in any way.

Certainly though, and like you said, most of the T.P. fans seem to really like Stevie... and even if they didn't, that's cool, too. We Nicks fans shouldn't get rattled every time someone comes along who doesn't like her. That's probably one of the biggest things that gives us such a bad reputation... though I'll add, for the millionth time, that we're certainly not the only fan community who's defensive and protective of their favorite artist.

I was hoping the tour would continue without Tom! :D

Seriously though, my initial reaction was "OMG how could anyone not want to see Stevie?" but that is of course b/c I'm a Stevie fan, not a Tom fan. I totally understand their perspective. When Stevie was touring with Don, I wanted it to only be her (which it was thankfully when she got to Cali) and even when she's with FM I perfer it be just Stevie so who can blame these people, they are die hard Tom fans.

This is a bit harsh from one of the obviously hard-core TP fans but kind of funny at the same time:

I just came right out and said it, being totally honest!...Stevie's gotta go!!....I was lucky enough to see TP with Pearl Jam in Milwaukee for 2 nights and let me tell you the tunes were better...we got to hear "Here comes my girl" , "Honey Bee", "Its Good To Be King" ( which was the most unbelievable version i've ever heard" "Cabin Down Below" and of course "The Waiting" with Eddie Vedder....Now when that animal stevie comes out, it's soooo boring, yes yes Stop Draggin my heart around is awesome, but some on now.. I'd rather hear somethin' elese. STEVIE STAY AWAY FROM BUFFALO AND TORONTO!....
Yep, our gal's a real animal aint' she! ;) Just for that guy I'm going to pray she shows up to both of these shows.

Well, the two of them went to the opening show for the 'TISL' tour in Pittsburgh, and when they got home, they bitched that Sheryl Crow sang two of her own songs when they wanted to see only Stevie!

So it's not even just diehards who complain about "special guests."

You must have him mistaken with Bob Dylan, who, I might add, your precious Stevie is sounding more and more like every day.

In any case, it's not Petty's voice that is the reason why his fans love him. It's the music itself and the words he writes. Not to mention the fact that, unlike some other artists, he doesn't seem to see his fans as nothing but dollar signs.

Tom Petty of course. He's always looked out for his fans and made efforts to keep his ticket and album prices reasonable (at least relative to what other artists charge) and that's part of his appeal - at least it is for me.

I love their music and think they are all way cool - but I also am pretty confident they love the money too. I certainly would!

Well, see it how you want. I'm not denying that they all love the money part of their fame and careers, but I doubt that you'll ever see a wine bottle with Tom Petty's name on it in a Costco or anywhere else, ever.

As for LB. If he is so fixated on money, why is that we're just now getting a solo album after 14 years of waiting? If money was any real incentive for him, he would've had it done and released shortly after The Dance when interest was at its peak.

I think that is mostly due to two things:

1. His label wasn't really that interested because he has a much smaller fan base than Stevie.

2. His pathos

Interestingly, he seems to have learned his lesson somewhat with the release of this record somewhat close to SYW.

I conclude he likes the money because:

1. GYOW is used for car commercials

2. He travels just like the rest of them

3. He mentioned his multi-million dollar house in that doc. and while driving his $100,000 Mercedes.

Note - I do not fault him for any of this. In fact, I wish I had his money and if I had his talent, I would do exactly the same thing only more of it to make even more money

I just said that I don't deny that they all like the money, I just don't see it as a big incentive for him. Also, let's not forget that, although he didn't get the double album he was pushing for, he still had to forfeit royalties on some of his songs to get SYW to the length it was (granted, some people don't see the length as a positive thing, but that's beside my point). It seems to me that if money was that big of a motivator, he would've pared it down to 12 songs and collected royalties on all of his.

On the other hand, it seems to me that both have large enough egos that Stevie might have insisted on having the same amount of songs as Lindsey, but we'll never know.

Also - I forgot to address your point about GYOW being in commercials. That's not quite the same, since it is the automobile corporations that he is making the money from, not the fans.

In any case, we're going to have to agree to disagree and leave it as that, as I have to go to work now.

To many (not me mind you) - selling out you art to a commercial is the same as slapping your name on a bottle of wine - in fact, it could be considered worse as the wine had nothing to do with the music while the commercial did. In other words, Mick was not selling out his art, LB was.

If an artist you really like is making money from car commercials, they're not selling out. If an artist you dislike is making money from car commercials, they're selling out.

Right?

It reminds me of that line in "Bullets Over Broadway" when the Rob Reiner character gleefully states that he has never had a success because he could not lower his art for commercial sale - or something like that.

Mechanical royalties for albums don't work like that- they are capped at a certain number of songs. Back in the stone age when I was still involved in music business, mechanical royalties were paid up to ten songs per album. However, I think it might be up to 12 these days, but, I'm not sure.

So, 10, 15, 18, or 23 songs- the mechanical royalties for the album sales are all the same.

Right, but would they then get royalties for writing six each - or did LB take, say, 4 and La Nicks 8?

Right, but would they then get royalties for writing six each - or did LB take, say, 4 and La Nicks 8?I think the individual songwriter gets full royalty payments up to 10 songs. So Lindsey got full payment on his 9 'Say You Will' songs, as did Stevie. But if it had been a double, 24-track album, then they each would have had reduced royalty rates to make up the difference on their additional songs. Lindsey was offering to take the hit himself, so Stevie would receive her full royalty payments. Remember him saying in the documentary that, in figuring out how he could swing that financially, he'd have to be guaranteed that the band would tour for a solid two years (or was it three?) for him to recoup his loss on the album? Since he wasn't confident that the band would tour for that long, he made the decision to pare the album back to one disc.

Why on Earth they didn't split all the tracks they had into two separate albums and release them a year apart, is beyond me. They wouldn't have had to discuss royalty rates and reduced payments, or any of that stuff.

I don't remember it quite like that ( I'd have to go back and look at it again). The only thing about that section I remember is he saying that if Stevie decided to pull out after say 40 shows, then he'd have to reconsider whether it be a single or double cd.

Apart from the financial & business considerations, there is an aesthetic statement being made with a big collection of tracks all called "Say You Will." What that is precisely, you'd have to ask Fleetwood Mac. But I have no doubt it's there & that it played a role in the decision.

For example, I think Lindsey & perhaps Mick very much had "Tusk" on their minds when they were planning & getting started on this album.

I believe the band splits the mechanical royalties between the four of them.

The publishing royalties, performance/singles royalties are paid to the songwriter.

I could be wrong, though..... it's been so long since I've had to deal with this type of crap.

I, on the other hand, am totally bummed that Stevie probably won't be at Darien Lake on Tuesday.

She wasn't there? Wow...in a way (don't hate me), I'm sort of glad because I decided not to go to that concert because I didn't want to sit through Tom Petty's music.

That's really a shame though, because the guys who delivered my new dryer yesterday were going there especially to see Stevie. :distress:

Oh wow. I'm still alive, just got back from some time off,I'll apologize to the Tom Petty fans, I got pissed off on here, I guest I got out of hand reading the TP&HB board for a couple of days and went nutts overprotecting Stevie.I'm sorry.I like Tom Petty, I like his music all these years, It was nice to see him live.Hahaha so he sounds nasaly like Randy Travis, Tom's good.. And it was worth driving 130 miles to see his show in Mansfield. It was his show, Stevie was the guest, I have to remember that.I feel the same way as some if not all of you, when Don Henley toured with Stevie last year, less Don songs, more Stevie songs, the same with Don, I like Don's solo tunes and his Eagles tunes too.btw I wonder how much royalties Stevie and Tom lost. because of Peer to Peer, Bittorrent sites, Hum.It probably could finance her next tour.hum..

Are both situations selling out? Absolutely. But my original point was that Tom Petty doesn't see his FANS as nothing but dollar signs, and for the most part, I believe the same of LB. Like I said before, when an artist allows his or her song to be used for advertising, it's not the fans that the money is coming from - at least not directly. It comes from the corporation that pays for the ad. It just doesn't seem like the same level to me, but that's just my opinion.

I've been thinking about this for a few days. Tom Petty popped my concert cherry back in 1975 and he truly was was first love in close running with Jackson Browne. I adore the guy. Oh and believe me, he wouldn't even need to get to the "Breakdown" point in the song for me to give it all up to him. I want him bad. More than Lindsey. More than Don. Sorry - it's late and I'm in a mood.

I see this as history in the making. I love the whole idea of these fantastic artists making appearances at concerts. It adds a little flavor, history, unspoken passion, and a trip back in time for those of us who have been around a while.

The Petty fans I met in Dallas made the show. The interactions with them were absolutely some of the best I've ever experienced. Peace Love and Pot for everyone.

Let the bitchers bitch and the blissers enjoy their bliss. Personally, I'm still blissful after my evening with Tom and Stevie.:]
