(BANG) - George Clooney felt suicidal while filming 'Syriana'.

The 'Oceans Eleven' actor revealed that shooting the dark political drama was the "worst year of his life" after a string of personal tragedies made him severely depressed.

He is quoted in Britain's Daily Record newspaper as saying: "Last year was probably the worst year personally I've ever had.

"My brother-in law died of a heart attack aged 45, my grandmother fell, broke her hip and died this summer. And my dog got attacked by a rattlesnake and killed."

The 'Out of Sight' actor also admitted his depression was further fuelled by unwanted weight gain and an on-set injury.

He said: "I had to put on weight in about a month to do the movie. You should not put on 38lb when you are 44.

"Then there was this scene where I was taped to a chair and the chair was kicked over and I hit my head. I basically bruised my brain."

We're all susceptible to depression. I like when famous people talk about it as it helps reduce the stigma.

Yeah, I can see why he'd feel suicidal.....he's famous, rich, gorgeous, and was able to have the best doctors in the world treat and cure him. Pleazzzzze

Being famous, rich, and gorgeous means one can't get depressed?

Maybe he was being treated. Depression and suicidal thoughts don't go away overnight and there is no "cure".

If my brother AND dog died..and his dog died so terribly....that sucks rich and famous or not.

And actually I'd think that the rich and famous part would actually ADD to the depression - I mean the word privacy probably left his world long ago.

No, it says, Clooney felt suicidal. And he was treated and cured of his leaky spine fluid (from the blow to the head).

Not much more painful than leaky spinal fluid. Anyone here ever had a spinal tap? Not what I'd call a fun time.

I enjoy reading about Randall Jarrell, who put on black clothes & then went "walking" out on a busy highway very late at night.

Randall Jarrell . . . one of the finest literary critics of the latter half of the 20th century. And a much, much greater poet than Stevie.

Apparently he was suicidal from the pain of his leaky spine, not cause his dog died.

Cause the reason's listed don't seem like reasons to want to kill yourself. Be depressed, yes, but want to kill yourself? I mean, your grandmother and your dog die. Come on.

^^ I would assume there were some underlying issues that were not stated. He has probably been battling depression for awhile and these just added fuel to the fire. I'm sure he just didnt' wake up one day with his dog/grandma and bro dead and thought.."hmmm....I'm depressed and suicidal"

but I'm reallly not an expert. I know nothing about depression. I fall more into the "bitchy" category. , But I have friends that are, and from what I know, it's usually chronic, no? Although it can be flared up by life-changing situations.

The book to read--and it IS the book to read--is William Styron's "Darkness Visible."

It looks interesting- well, this part looks a little scary- "...but is interesting to note Styron's slightly patronizing tone as he describes for the reader the secrets that only those who have joined this exclusive group can know."

Anyway, famous or not, depression is an individual experience. What may seem like no big deal to one person could make another contemplate suicide. I'm happy he's able to express himself- many people don't have that luxury.

If you can find it, get the audio cassette read by the author.

It's a disease that takes over your mind so it is no longer your own. My brother was suicidal over a breakup. This kind of attitude is exactly why people don't talk about their depression. Would you tell someone with a broken leg to walk it off?

Come on.you don't need a big tragedy to have suicidal thoughts, you can't really apply logic and reason to such a state of mind.

This is true, Confucious said if you try to mend the mind with the mind how can you avoid immense confusion?

where does it say he was suicidal except in the tagline?

depression can effect anyone...some worse than others. it goes without saying that some take depression a LOT harder than others who are able to just shrug it off so no one can judge the degree of another person's depression and the extent to which it may impact his or her life.

I know - that was a horribly written article - in fact I'm still looking for where it says his suicidal thoughts were because of spinal fluid - or are we supposed to just assume that from the bit where he hits his head

So yeah - I was thinking the same thing - severly depressed and suicidal aren't necessarily the same thing and the article and quotes themselves never mention suicidal thoughts.

Having sympathy for someone is completely different from feeling sorry for them.

but is it possible to have sympathy and feel sorry...for one's self? that's what I'd like to know.

I may be a medical mystery.

Pity has a helpless quality but sympathy is more giving of the heart without judgement, you know? If you are judging yourself too harshly then you might be depressed! We've now come full circle. :xoxo:

I didn't really *get* what depression was about until it happened to me. I was diagnosed with severe depression and had never had an episode before.

I wouldn't wish it on anyone; it is a horrible experience. Mine often kept me from being able to leave the house and even forced me to miss a Fleetwood Mac concert.

I don't really think it matters what the reasons are. It's a chemical imbalance and should be looked at more as a medical condition.

Exactly. That's what I was trying to say. I was responding to the article only. Obviously Mr. Clooney has some serious underlying issue's that are not discussed in the article of course. You're right Suze, I do not understand mental illness and hope that I never have too and I apologize if I offended anyone (again  ). It just sounded like the dude wanted to kill himself cause his dog died and I know that is not the case.
