I know most everyone has it in their profile, but I saw the legal professionals thread and thought we should all post what we do for a living. I checked and didn't think there had been one recently. Also if you are in school, tell what your major is or what you want to be when you grow up.

Anyway-I'm a dental Assistant. I have been at the same dental office for about 9 years. I started when I was about 19 and have been loving it ever since. I'll save you all from the disgusting nature of my job-but...it IS my favorite part :o When I was a kid I always thought I'd be a Veterinarian, but the teeth thing stuck. Guess I have plan B if saliva starts to bother me :)

a QC/NDT (Quality Control/Non-Destructive Tech.) Technician until illness & stress put me on the shelf...Now I am a house-husband!

Recently I saw an ad for Halliburton Corp. needing QC/NDT techs., Some jobs require oversea travel to the Middle East...Uh, no thanks, I prefer to stay in USA, And preferably alive!

I am the local host for the NPR program All Things Considered. I do some daily reporting/stories on the side, but my main job is doing newscasts at the top and bottom of the hour, then filling in various breaks with weater, PSAs and underwriters.

I used to do more reporting, but ditched that when I moved to Colorado - so far I have to say I don't miss it much.

I enjoy my job a great deal and get paid to talk which is good. BUT I'm constantly worried about the future of radio, the future of NPR and all that jazz. There is a lot going on and it's somewhat scary - but I figure if it comes down to it I'll get a teaching certificate and be the journalism teacher in a middle or high school somewhere :p

Well... I have been a production operator at a pharmaceutical company for quite a while... and I loved it, but I can't work the hours anymore, so I do desk work for production. I just handle all of their paperwork, and keep 'em out of a bind. I'm getting ready to start school, but I really don't know what for. I'm getting my pre req's out of the way first. I really want to go for nursing, but work will pay for me to go and major in chemistry. Plus, I can't see taking a year off work to do my clinicals for nursing... so it's looking more and more like chemistry. HHHMMMMM??? What to do?

Right now I am working as a barista in a coffee house- I received my degree in Psychology in 2004 and am starting graduate school in 3 weeks . I'm getting my masters degree in Clinical Social Work and hope to be a therapist when it's all said and done. My main area of interest is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and working with adult survivors of incest and/or child abuse.

I really don't know where my attraction comes from. I was not molested or abused as a child (as far as I know)- I have just always had a really strong sense of empathy for people who are struggling with PTSD. It doesn't surprise me that you were diagnosed, Maria. :xoxo:

I'm also really interested in working with psychiatric disorders- schizophrenia, Dissociative Identity Disorder, Bi-Polar, etc.

I think that's neat. Not that people have to live with those disorders, but that's what you want to do in life is to help them. When I went through all my "stuff" my therapy was worth every penny. They help you move right along...

I work at a major record company, in the boring part. I coordinate our coop advertising with a couple of the major chains and all of our small Midwestern accounts. It's depressing to help funnel millions of dollars for utterly pointless reasons, but I love my job and I love the environment- my coworkers are great, it's terribly casual, and free CDs.

I am a Sound Producer for multimedia, and have been working mostly for an educational software company for the last 7 years. I cast, direct, record, and edit voice overs, and sometimes I do the voice over work. The content is incredibly boring, and therefore so is the editing.
Sometime, I get to do foley sound and mixing for little animations we have in the games. I have the most fun with that. When I worked in the office full time, I was also in charge of the music for the products, but I am part-time now. Recently I have been recording interviews and speeches for the company, to be turned into informational Cds and podcasts.
Deanna, I always wanted to work in radio (lifelong radio junkie—especially public radio—from a family of radio junkies) even though I have a friend who works in public radio, and she thinks my envy is unwarranted.

i have run my own childcare service open 60 hrs a week for the past 7 yrs~ i always like to say babies are my business & business is good:nod: ~ i live by a HUGE airforce base & 95% of my babies come from there, alot of childcare's won't take newborn's so i specialize in that, i have ean early childhood development degree & i have had kids here being cared for by me from birth till they go off to school or their parents get deployed~ which can be heartbreaking when they move on, but i found that if you love kids it is a great business, the little ones show their thankfulness by loving you & trusting you & hey how can i go wrong, people are gonna keep having babies~

i have had 2 sad things in my daycare tho, i took care of this sweet little boy named mason, who died of lukeimia (*sp) when he was 3~ & i also watched a little girl named emma who at 10 months her father shook her, her shook her & then brought her to my house & the after effects, seizures & stuff started happening at my home, omg, talk about horrible~ her father admitted what he did & was serving time last i heard:mad: ~ what an idiot~

We'll see. I'm a little nervous about it. I was pretty good at it in high school. I know this will be totally different. Firstly, I could get an Associates in Biotechnology, but that only opens me up to a lab position as a lab tech. If I kept on going with a bacchelors in Chemistry, then I could be a scientist in the labs. They make a considerable amount of money. In all honesty, I'm not doing it for the money, I just want some more stability in my job and position.

Unwarranted!?! I LOVE working in public radio - if something bad happens and it's no more - I will, under no circumstances, work in commercial radio..I've become a snob. And I worked in commercial radio for a bit and hated it with every fiber of my being.

Where does your friend in public radio work - it's a small world public radio! But some stations are better than others in terms of the people and practices, I've just been very very lucky to work at three top-notch (ok 2 top-notch, 1 just mid-notch) public radio stations.

That is awesome! I didn't know that.

:D Yep - I've been working in public radio for about 5 years now - started as a student reporter in college and then Interned at NPR in DC - then started at member stations. I LOVE it - and once 3pm hits here time flies - I do 4 hours of ATC then I local host Fresh Air as well - 'tis a ton of fun!

You, sir, are a very wise man. That's why I became a nurse. No offense to doctors (hi Brad!) because without them & their knowledge I couldn't do my job. BUT - too many of them forget that without nurses, they couldn't do their jobs either. And too many focus on treating the ailment instead of treating the patient. The bond I've formed with patients is amazing.

my aunt is a nurse and she says the same thing. it's a very rewarding job, even if it's terribly sad sometimes too. I can remember going to lunch with several of her elderly patients (she's a home-health nursing supervisor) that she had formed close bonds with...they were always so grateful and nice and welcoming.

since my 'better other half" Deb is a nurse (Med search-She also works in the ICU/ER/OB), my older sister Lesa is a nurse and one of the very few people I call friend (Kelli) is also a nurse.

Sadly Oklahoma, As is the rest of the US, is in the middle of the worse nursing shortage on record.

To change the topic a tad, I was watching TV when I noticed that a few of my fellow NDT tech's are the ones responsible for noticing the corrosion in the BP pipeline in Alaska. They discovered the corrision & cracks by using ultrasonics & radiographic scans of the pipeline...Good work guys.

She works in SF, for noth of the NPR stations, but is freelance. I should have said that she thinks my envy of the radio work is unwarranted, not specifically public radio. I think the low pay has her disillusioned. She and I were working in bars and restaurants 10 years ago, and I think she has forgotten what a grind that was!
Radio is magic. Turning the dial, or searching for an internet station is like wandering through the stacks of the library. I have been hooked ever since my first crystal radio set, in third grade.

Ah yes, the low pay in public radio can be a bitch. It depends on where you are though - I'm making more money in Colorado than I was in Rochester and the cost of living is pretty comparable. Either way though public radio salaries are generally on the low side. Still, I think it's worth it to be able to say you love what you do!

Haha! No offense taken. I completely agree with you...doctors couldn't do anything without nurses. I make every effort to get to know all the nurses I work with on a first-name basis. Because let's face it, y'all can make things either really wonderful for us or complete hell! I prefer the former. And I'm very happy to be at an institution right now where the nurses are amazing and very nice...180 from where I went to medical school.

That being said, I'm a resident physician in the first year of my anesthesiology residency. I love it so far, and it's not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. Granted, I'm only about 6 weeks into it but hopefully it'll stay this way!

This has definately started intriguing me lately. Not that it hasn't before, but recently we have gotten a few patients who do this very same thing (or at least I think they do if I'm getting it correctly.) It's a non profit org. that gives free tests, meds, counseling and so on. I was talking to one of the employees about her job and she loves it. She was able to explain some things to me that I didn't quite understand and I'm definately wanting to learn more.

I thought you meant you had a corn and carrot salad. Made of corn and carrots.
Now Seeker, c'mon, did you use dark green lettuce or iceberg? Hmmm?
I don't care what that thing says, a smarter dr./nutritionist said it's a grain. I never trust the USDA anyways.

Corn is hardly "new". Corn is considered a Starchy VEGETABLE unless it is processed. The corn is put through a drying process when it arrives at the plant. It is then cleaned, steamed and the tough outer hull is removed. Degermination occurs next, leaving only the endosperm. The endosperm is then passed through rollers to break it into granules. At this point the corn is considered a "grain". (More through usage than for designation)

I am going to believe in John Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Harvard Medical, and other universities over "One Guy". (Who is he anyway? And why did he think it needed to be reclassified? Really curious..)

I know! Sometimes I feel like a translator! And Grey's doesn't offend me at all, since it is a show about interns, not nurses. I don't mind. ER did a decent job at showing nurses in a positive light - then they sent Abby to med school (further implying the mistaken assumption that all nurses want to be doctors) and cut the other nurses' parts so you hardly ever see them anymore. Stupid TV.

Cut & paste, my sweet. :woohoo:

1 - Quote a post
2 - Write your reply, but don't submit
3 - Highlight the entire thing, right click, then cut
4 - Hit your browser's "back" button to return to the thread
5 - Quote another post
6 - Left click in the reply space (to make sure your curser's in the right place), then right click & paste.

And so on & so on. It's not hard, but sometimes in the cut & paste madness you'll lose a ] or [ symbol, which screws it up, so you just have to find out what you accidentally deleted & put it back in.

Did that make sense?

This has definately started intriguing me lately. Not that it hasn't before, but recently we have gotten a few patients who do this very same thing (or at least I think they do if I'm getting it correctly.) It's a non profit org. that gives free tests, meds, counseling and so on. I was talking to one of the employees about her job and she loves it. She was able to explain some things to me that I didn't quite understand and I'm definately wanting to learn more.

You mean you have patients who are engaged in advocacy? That's great. If you want to PM me, I'd love to talk more about it.

As of now I am a stay at home mother. I love it and believe its the most important thing I'll ever do. But I have been thinking about what I'll do when he gets in school. I'm interested in massage thearpy (I have magic hands, especially my thumbs)and also being a drug and alcohol abuse counselor. Massage thearpy wouldn't take nearly as long as counseling, but that would be more important. But I have time to think about it.
Currently I am looking for something around town just to get me to atleast one Lindsey show.
Also, in the middle of typing this Mason (my son) just threw up his bottle all over the piece that holds the keyboard, himself and me. Never a dull moment.

That's why you have to click on the post area that says "quote" first. Then write your post like usual, but instead of submitting, you cut the whole thing (the quote and your response beneath it) and paste it into the new quote space.

Or like Haley said, put the person's screen name in the quote bracket at the beginning of their quote - instead of [QUOTE] it would be [QUOTE=skcin] Just be sure to check you've spelled their screen name exactly right. :)

Yep, we do! It is a really good job, especially for someone who never finished high school. But I'm slowly starting to get bored with it... My concoction reccomendations are: Peppermint ice cream w/ Chocolate Chips mixed in, a Coconut shake or Birthday Cake ice cream w/ Sprinkles mixed in on a Skor cone  We used to get free ice cream, too, but they just recently took that benefit away.

I'm not one of those who gains a tremendous amount of weight. But, even so, you, most likely, won't get fat off one, six-ounce ice cream per day... I go by the food guide, too, so that's only one serving of milk products, out of the two or three you should be having! Another thing that helps is, I only work for four hours and I take my ice cream home; I'm not in the habit of eating on the job, because I prefer to sit down while I eat ;)

I'm slowly working my way back. It was a VERY clean place, it's just....you can only have a spicy chicken sandwich and caesar salad for breakfast so many days in a row for so long.

I have never had that problem. In high school I worked at Arby's and Subway and never minded eating the food. Hell it was free! Then later on when I worked at a restaurant, I did get tired of some things. Only because they were so good and just wore them out. I would give anything to eat at the old restaurant I worked at. Actually scratch that, they have new owners and some of it is not the same. :distress:

I needed a career change, it just wasn't fulfilling me. This way I get to work with people (while manipulating them) and puppets (once again while manipulating them). It gives you an enormous feeling of well being I tell ya. I recommend it!

yeah. I get that. I mean..people ask me "why...WHY"..all the time. Why did I quit my dental job to contribute to illegal stock trading. It just boils down to...well...money.

Trackaghost-Yes..I totally agree. And....when you have the kind of job we have, it definately has perks (or at least mine does..) like connections to the mob and so forth. So really you can have anyone taken out at a blink's notice.

^^ perfect!! That will give me a good excuse to go to London and you to come to.....er....Kentucky. Maybe we could meet in Nashville.

I also have another skill. With all the dental training I have..I can remove someone's 2 front teeth just by looking at them. I mean..not lethal, but come on-how do you explain your two front teeth just...missing. ?? by a chic??

It's really a gift.
