I don't know if this has made the national news yet, but people in Miami are going crazy partying in the streets.
Apparently, Castro is gravely ill and has turned over power of Cuba to his brother Raul.
There are a lot of happy Cubans here tonight. They are seeing it as the end of an era. It is ALL they are talking about on the news stations tonight.

I thought it was just temporary while he undergoes surgery? It will be very, very interesting to see what becomes of Cuba post Castro.

I think it is a god fit for us. Prior to Castro, Cuba was a vibrant American stronghold as a classy vacation spot - it still is a fairly hot spot for countries other than America, though nowhere near what it was. Also, America likely is the only country that will be willing to take on that revitalization project. I mean if our money is going to, and we all know it is because of Florida's electoral votes, help rebuild that country, we might as well own it

Tourism sustains all the Carribean Islands and it is a multi billion $$$ a year business. American hotels, the airlines, etc. will pounce on that in a second and that will bring billions of rev. to us. I mean if we are going to give them billions, we might as well get it back IMO.

Put them on a raft and send them to California via the Panama Canal, thus generating additional tax rev. for us.

He's only doing it temporarily while he goes under the knife. It ain't over 'till he kicks the bucket. Then Raul takes over.

I was in Cuba a couple of years ago. Thought it was a really beautiful place. Havana was a real trip back in time... all the old 50's cars and the old decaying buildings - It just added to it's charm.. it was cool to see. The beaches and hotels down there were all top notch from what I could see... You wouldn't know you were in a communist country that's for sure.

You said it. Cuba is a country. And no country should own another one.
I don't like Castro, hope democracy will return soon in Cuba. But USA owning all countries with problems, is not a solution, is a mild and disguised kind of dictatorship

It's controversial. It should be charming, as Europe is, with its old buildings, narrow streets.
But in Cuba case, though still Havana could be a nice city, the decaying buildings and old cars is a sign of strong poverty (did you meet any male or female young who sale themselves for a piece of cake or a jean?)
