I'm curious because I recently joined the ranks of in June (I do stand up comedy). I was wondering if anyone else here performs (anything), what they do, how long they've been doing it, and any horror stories to share. Or advice. Like make sure you don't have lipstick in your teeth.

Sigh. I used to.

I'll skip the band days...like school band.

In college though I had a couple of bands (I was the drummer). My first band was called Dialectrik and we were pretty damn cool - performing with them was a blast...and we even had a small local following!

My next band - The Damn Rathers - we only performed in public once, then I left the band, sold my drums and moved. They stayed together a bit after that then disbanded.

I miss performing a lot - I got lots and lots of free beer, a few extra bucks -and it's where I picked up my ex-boyfriend :p

I'm performing right now!

Yeah, no. Like everyone, I've done stuff, lots of stuff, but not currently. Have you had another show besides the one on your myspace?

I don't think I really did anything from the age of 6 till 22 or something that wasn't in front of people. Anyhoo.
Oh yeah, my only horror story was in 8th grade, so I'm not sure that counts. However, that one experience caused me to never have a repeat of anything resembling a horror story.

i do five shows a day and maaaaaan the crowd is tough. i teach teenagers. a few things:

don't drink too much or else you'll just have to pee a lot.

don't wear anything or use anything too complicated or else you'll just keep checking to see if it's still working properly.

always have a backup and a time filler in case what you're doing sucks or doesn't take up enough time.

luckily no horror stories to report. yet.

Like everyone, I've done stuff, lots of stuff, but not currently.

I'm one of these too.

I did theatre all through school into college, then again about 6 years out of college for another three years or so, broken up by a stint as a stage electrician.

Horror stories? I forgot my lines onstage more than once, the worst being in a monologue show, that is a show made up of a series of monologues. Normally you can just kind of look pleadingly at one of the other actors and after an excruciating (to you) amount of silence goes by someone jumps in. Of course during a monologue it's just you!

I actually had a boyfriend come to one of my shows and, after drinking a good part of the six pack he smuggled in, yell out to me onstage.

I'm sure more stories will come to me...

I've performed in a couple of plays. My advice is to take it seriously enough that you know your cues and all, but don't be afraid to have fun with it.

When I acted in Our Town in high school, I used to "act" the scene where Mrs. Soames has her panties in a bunch about Simon Stimson being drunk. I would "play" Mrs. Soames and would recite those lines to the girl who played Mrs. Gibb. And the girl would actually say, "now Louella."

I think that bit of levity helped... I heard through the sophomore grapevine (even though I was a senior, lol) that I was very popular with the drama club peeps.

HALLELUJAH sister! Your preaching to the choir here...since I've taught grades 9-12 for 7 years now. I do love it since I have a CAPTIVE audience...:] The only other time I had more fun was when I appeared as the opening announcer on the Rosie O'Donnell Show in December 15, 1998. I worked with Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, Angelina Jolie and Shawn Mullins that day...and it was truly my 15 minutes of fame! My students can't get enough of watching it

I'm working on it. It looks as if my parents are going to split the purchase of a synth for my birthday. But, I dunno if its really worth it. I'm good at piano, but I'm not sure at my band playing skillz.
