Plains, Midwest anticipate heat wave
Scorching heat again built up over the Plains and Upper Midwest early Monday as the furnace-like air that blistered California last week settled over the nation's midsection.
Numerous heat warnings were in place from Michigan to Oklahoma, with high temperatures expected to climb into the 90s or 100s, and sparking thunderstorms along its eastern edge.
The heat wave was keeping thousands huddled in their air-conditioned homes as many poor and homeless people sweat it out or head for cooling centers.
The combination of temperatures in the mid to upper 90s and high humidity threatened to make it feel like 100 degrees to 105 degrees in the Lower Peninsula.
In western Upper Michigan, highs ranging from 97 to 102 degrees combining with high humidity could make it feel as hot as 110 degrees to unprotected skin, forecasters said.
Highs Sunday reached only into the 80s statewide, but thunderstorms caused disruption and damage as they crossed the Lower Peninsula.
About 25,000 customers of Detroit Edison, DTE Energy Co.'s electricity production unit, lost power at some point during Sunday's storms, spokesman Len Singer said. Consumers Energy Co. spokesman Jay Jacobs said 14,000 customers lost power.
In Minneapolis, temperatures are expected to be near triple digits in the metro area and dew points are expected to be high Monday, said meteorologist Matt Friedlein. The heat index will approach 105 to 110 degrees, he said.
In Oklahoma on Sunday, temperatures reached 106 degrees in Stillwater in north-central Oklahoma and Ardmore in south-central Oklahoma and 104 degrees in Bartlesville, Lawton and Muskogee.
The thermometer hit 101 in Tulsa and 102 in Oklahoma City, the 17th time this year that the state capital has reached triple digits. That's compared to twice last year and not at all in 2002 or 2004.
Residents of Bismarck, N.D., experienced their seventh July day of triple-digit temperatures on Sunday, meteorologist Ken Welk said. The July record for the city is 12 days, set in 1936, he said.
Twelve people were taken to hospitals after suffering heat-related illnesses at an international scout jamboree Sunday in Maryland.
The jamboree in Darlingon was organized by the Polish Scouters Association, and it included children from Australia, England, Poland, Canada, Argentina and America, said Reed Blom, the director of Camp Spencer. None of the illnesses was considered to be serious.
Among those sweating it out in Michigan were 8,000 Boy Scouts attending a national conference at Michigan State University in East Lansing — and sleeping in mostly un-air-conditioned dorms. Organizers of the National Order of the Arrow Conference had 20 to 25 medical professionals on hand.
Scouts were being warned to pay attention if they started feeling the effects of the heat. "Get indoors, take it easy," Order of the Arrow director Clyde Mayer said. "The Boy Scout motto is, `Be prepared.' And I think our guys will be."

Ya, at 6:00 this morning, it was already around 80 deg. I think the overnight low was 77. Supposed to get to 95, but that's nothing. The humidity is what's going to get us.

Heat wave? 107-108 in the summer is nothing to Texans. If it dips below 90, we're tempted to put on a sweater.

In Oklahoma on Sunday, temperatures reached 106 degrees in Stillwater in north-central Oklahoma and Ardmore in south-central Oklahoma and 104 degrees in Bartlesville, Lawton and Muskogee.

in Oklahoma, just a typical summer is all. This summer is not even the hottest in Oklahoma history, that would be 1936. (By the way, According to NWS the temps in Oklahoma are measured in the shade...Typically you add 10 degrees to the shade temp for actual heat temps.)
The National Weather Service HQ in Norman, OK has shown, that except for Death Valley, that the SW quadrant of Oklahoma is the hottest place on average in the US (Ahead of Phoenix, which is 3rd.) since we have higher humidity than desert arid climates.
Oh, It was still 92 degrees last night at 10PM...And it was already 82 at 7AM this morning.
Thank God for AC!!!

it was over 98 people.
Oklahoma has had only about 8 heat related deaths thus far, And the worse is yet to come since August is usually the hottest time of the year.

So true. It's 91 degrees here right now with 72% humidity.
And besides, we put up with brutal winters here, so we don't need heat waves to go through weather hell.

Right? When they were talking about the temperature hitting 102 in California I thought, "Hmm..that's a NICE day in Phoenix or Vegas!"
But do people not typically have air conditioning? And I guess the elderly and very young are mostly the ones who are dying, sad really.

on the reprieve, But it will only be about 98 instead of 104
The local news just showed that this summer is on par to be the worse heatwise since the dustbowl summer of 1936 (Funny, last Friday I saw a dust storm upclose since I got caught out in the damn thing.)
It's always like this every August where I live so I'm not noticing anything unusual around here. Hot and humid as hell is the norm for summers here. (North Carolina)

98 degrees with 45% humidity, heat index is 106. Can't wait to get home and play tennis in this for two hours- my boyfriend is obsessed with punishing his body as much as humanly possible and I have to play along. The hotter and nastier it is, the more he wants to go out and play. I suffer in silence.
I left the building for lunch and felt like human barbecue. Really. I kept wondering what my arm would taste like slathered in barbecue sauce.

He loves to play in the afternoon, which rules, since I am usually at work. I do make him slather on the sunblock when he goes out there then.
We won't get out there until 6PM or so, so the sun won't be too bad. It'll still be hotter than a bitch, though- it's 5PM now and it's 97 degrees w/ 43% humidity, heat index 105. At least we can always dive into the pool when we're done.

That's not too bad, 6:00. Are you already drinking water in preparation? :p We used to play at night in the summer b/c they had lights. But I guess your bf is a smidge of a masochist.
I'll commence being jealous of your pool, now. Well, in that way that it is only 70 degrees here right now, not so much swimming weather.
Doesn't the pool feel like bathwater when it's that hot and humid?
Anyway, you must be getting really good at tennis, and really fit. Just don't die.

I can't stand the heat. Seriously, I'm a big baby when the temps go over 85. Plus, we don't have central air in my house... just a window unit in the living room... so it looks like I'll be sleeping on the couch all week.

bad air quality warnings all the time, due in part to the fact that pollution from Texas (ie-Dallas) seems to travel towards the North in the summer months....Which makes it very hard to breathe if you have respiratory problems.
Btw, The temp is 105.8 w/ 24% humidity....Today is the 19th day the temp has reached over 100 degrees since the official start of summer.
