View Full Version : Most annoying fan faction?

I know I'm gonna stir up some s**t with this post, but something's been frustrating me for a very long time. Namely, the way the entire Fleetwood Mac fanbase seems to be fragmented into six or seven warring factions. I try to be open minded, but god, I'm getting annoyed with the crap. I've identifed the eight major "cults" and listed why they annoy me. If you're offended, well, too bad!
Greenies: Relentlessly super high-and-mighty, extreme superiority complex, constantly bashes all other lineups.
Chiffonheads: Extremely defensive, lashes out at everyone who disagrees with themselves, bordering on being a personality cult.
Buckyheads: "Oh, he's the ultimate genius! Everything he does is absolutely amazing, Fleetwood Mac would be lost without him, he produces and arranges everything they do!" ad nausem.
Sugar Daddies: Consistently snooty and uptight, tells everyone to stop being fanboys and girls even when they themselves are.
Peter Who? Pretends that Fleetwood Mac only existed from 1975 to 1987 and 1997 to the present.
Hangars-On: Criticizes every single bowel Fleetwood Mac has performed since 1982, but calls themselves fans anyway.
General fanboy/fangirl: Loves everything Fleetwood Mac has ever done , but won't admit that they've done some bad songs in the past. Usually spastic.
SortaSavageLike: Seems like a pretty average fan, but borderline schizophrenic. What's with the 2,000 word reviews and the boob jokes?

Watch it, buddy.
I've been here for three years, since I was 13, and I can tell you this much: it's not about age as much as it is about maturity level. There are 30-somethings on this board who have the mentality of toddlers, and there are 16 year-olds that are wise well beyond their years. And vice-versa. And hey, I bet money that there are even some 16 year-old Green fans with sticks up their asses, so there you go.
Contrary to popular belief, not all of the younger members of this board are taken~ by the wind~~*~~ and tYpE lYk DiS LOLOLOL. Are there some? Of course. But we're not all like that. If you're basing your opinion on those kinds of things, then you might as well include all windchildren.
Oh, and I went with the "Sugar Daddies." I'm as pretentious as they come, but, seriously? It's Fleetwood Mac. No reason to be uptight.

I so dearly ask forgiveness for creating such a right ruckus. My demeanor is damned uncalled for in this enchanting forum, which is most rightfully arrogated for discussions apropos Fleetwood Mac. Now, if you gentlemen will excuse me, I will take punctual leave, during which I will sample the peerless wines of Europe whilst listening to Warm Ways in a perpetual loop, till I become fatigued and proceed to layeth atop my berth.

I've changed somewhat in my FM fandom. I used to be just a complete Stevie-can-do-no-wrong chiffonhead. Now I find myself being critical when I feel she needs to be ripped but I also praise her when that's due. In my Burnish days, a Lindsey fan and a Christine fan were my biggest ally and my closest friend.
The people I find irritating are those who appear in the fan gathering of one member to rip him or her to shreds. If you don't like Stevie Nicks, stay out of her fan community! If you can't stand Lindsey Buckingham, don't troll his forum!

I voted for "Peter Who?". I don't think there would be FM if it wasn't for Peter. And not just for Peter, what about Kirwan and Spencer?
Close seconds would be Chiffonheads, but for me actually the people who attempt to wear the chiffon a la Stevie. Leave the witchy clothes to Stevie please. Then come the Hangars-On and then General Fan Boy/Girl. I myself would probably fall in the General FanGirl faction. But the only difference I know they had some crap along the way.

I have been defending my love of Stevie for YEARS. Outside the fan community (ie, in real life) and here in the fan community. So, I'm kind of a pro at being a chiffonhead. That being said, I am the first to admit when Stevie lets me down (which she has over the last few years). So, while I don't think she is utter perfection, I will always worship her, in spite of what is considered "cool" or, whatever. A few people bashing her in a fan forum is nothing compared to listening to someone imitate her in the goat voice- it's so original!

See I don't think that makes you a chiffonhead. You love Stevie Nicks and her music but you can criticize her mistakes with an open mind and a third person perspective. That makes you a devoted and loyal fan not a nutjob.
A chiffonhead is the Fleetwood Mac equivilent of an idealogical extremist. A musical Al Queda, a Taleban of the rock fan world if you will. They don't understand what the hell they are fighting for but will defend it to the end for no apparent reason. They resort to name calling and abuse if you even dare to question them. I don't think its truly about Stevie Nicks or her music. I think they need a forum to vent and a target audience for it. Every forum has these, I would say, passionate people. Maybe too passionate about their cause to see the bigger picture. So they choose a subject or figure, usually a politician, rock star or movie personality to defend with this passion.
But hey, its better than terrorism right? :wavey:

well well well...look at what's got the most votes.Chiffonheads have the most concentrated amount of votes, but the other factions combined have more votes overall (albeit by a slight margin). ;)
I have to admit that the most militant of Chiffonheads tend to make me cringe the most (or just Chiffonheads in general, as David O. explained to me a while back that the term really wasn't meant to describe ALL Nicks fans, only those who are the most truculent), as I think a rational debate is always better than a knee-jerk, "but she's a GODDESS" rebuttal. However, I still maintain that they're truly no worse than the most vocal of the other fan factions, as they can all seem like irrational dolts from time to time.
But as annoying as those various factions can be, I think they ultimately cancel each other out... so I voted for the "hangers on." Possessing a discerning eye/ear is always a good thing, but once you've turned into a parody of Statler & Waldorf, it's time to move on.

I went with the Chiffonheads, but I feel I must clarify. I define Chiffonhead as someone who refuses to admit that Stevie's ever recorded a bad song, or think she hasn't ever made a mistake, or that her poo doesn't smell. I mean, I know her poo has glitter & sparkles in it, but I'm sure it smells.

TITN was my first album, when I was five years old. I don't remember what the commercial was that was on at the time, but there was one that had "Simply Irresistible"-esque chicks looking at the camera with Vogue faces with a song in the background that sounded like Isn't It Midnight. I've always associated them together.
Everytime I hear the song, I want to either dry my armpits off or watch something like Top Gun. It's not pleasant, either way.

Funny post. I voted for the Hangars...
Why can't we all get along? Why can't there be world peace? Seriously, no matter how "annoying" each faction might be, the truth is what makes FM great is its broad appeal--and the fact that such a variety of talent has flourished under that battle standard.
People say "I hate Chris." Well, then you hate the Mac--as a band. People say "I hate Stevie." Ditto. You can't separate these elements. And the band members themselves would never dream of doing this. So why do we?

If Bob hadn't played with them for those 5 minutes, they would have NEVER become the FM we all know and love. Bob saved the band from extinction...yada, yada, yada.
Sheesh, it never ends with those people.

I voted for Hangar-ons because I'm tired of listening to people bitch about them "not being good enough" or "not as good as they used to be" blah blah.
the only thing I don't understand is why so much hatred for the young fans. I've just always been thrilled that there are so many young people who like Fleetwood Mac. If only the young farts liked the Mac, their music may not have much longevity after we are gone

The Greenies were a very close second. I'm sure one of them will be along shortly to tell me I should have picked them & that I have no taste.

I've seen a LOT of "personal insults" on this board just simply get ignored. What makes this one any different? :rolleyes:Admittedly, "personal insult" can be a bit of a grey area. The majority of our regular posters are friends though and will sometimes call each other "bitch," etc., in a joking fashion. However, when a term like that is used between two users who aren't friends, then it comes across much differently and raises a flag.
I'd like to add that, while it may appear that other "personal insults" go ignored, we often contact the party/parties via Private Message. Since it's done in private, I guess it can be misconstrued as being ignored.
In this particular situation, since the tone of the post was difficult to determine, I felt I should comment in the thread before there was the chance for an argument to break out.
I hope that clears things up. :)

You say that JohnnyStew "knows you" and therefore should know that you didn't mean any harm (although he was still obviously unsure) but I don't know you and you gave no indication in that post that you meant it as a joke. Well, the Mac was very popular prior to then. I also think that the Mac may have continued, though to what end I am unsure as they were left with one singer songwriter who I think knew pretty much little about production and who eschewed the spotlight. So, it would have depended on the guitarist they hired as evidenced by the result of hiring LB. Like him or not, the first two records were brilliant and highly marketable.

LOL! Very interesting post. To be honest I don't really fall into any of the categories. The closest I would come to is maybe fanboy/fangirl because I am sorta a new fan but I have grown to love a lot of the lineups/albums pre/post BN. However, on the flip side there are also things the Mac has done that I don't like and I will admit it.Before I would have been one of those who thought Stevie Nicks was the best thing that has ever happened to FM. But I have grown out of that in the last 2 years even though she is still my favorite member.
Since I don't post much on the board but if I had to pick a group that bugged the hell out of me it would be the Greenie types. Not necessarily people who love the Peter Green lineup and hate the others...... but the people who have a stick up their ass and think they're more intelligent and superior than the newer fans. The whole purpose of joining this board was to learn more about FM and their music. As well as meeting people who love the band as much as I do. Instead ya get snotty remarks from a select few because your not as familiar with a lot about the group or you might make a mistake about something and you have a bunch of people telling you your not a real fan because you didn't know what the group ate on the morning of Oct 4,1976.

Ok I'm done venting....That's something that really annoys me, too. No one is born knowing all there is to know about Fleetwood Mac and its 14 or 15 different lineups. When someone asks a question, or simply isn't familiar with a particular lineup, instead of making them feel foolish, we should enlighten them. Suggest a quintessential song or two. Explain what we love about that lineup. And so forth.
I wouldn't be surprised if there were quite a number of fans who've never bothered to explore beyond the Buckingham Nicks years because other fans put them off with their attitude.

I TOTALLY agree with this statement as well as Dreamz19.
I think we can all be a little annoying at times, but there is no reason to discredit someone's love for a band just because they don't know every thing there is to know. That is why I'm wanting to know why people have so much hatred for the younger group. I think it's wonderful :)

I think we can all be a little annoying at times, but there is no reason to discredit someone's love for a band just because they don't know every thing there is to know.I don't recall this happening here. Could someone provide a reference to a specific post? My memory is affected by chronic illness.

I could go back & edit the offending statement & then apologize to the recipient. I feel just awful thinking I lambasted someone for not knowing some dumb little factoid about the band. I must have been out of my mind. What a ridiculous thing to yell at somebody for.

David, I can't speak for the others but when I mentioned the thing about being put down for not knowing a certain fact about the band I wasn't referring to you. It was another poster on the board who was very rude to a poster who made a mistake once. So I am sorry for that misunderstanding on my part because that certainly wasn't directed at you. I just saw where you made comments about not liking newer and younger fans and I consider myself both (I'm 19). Unless when you mean younger you are speaking of posters under 17 or 16.

The most annoying are the chiffon heads. I can say that because I am proudly one of them and I annoy myself. It's our job and we represent Stevie well.
However, I am personally more annoyed by the Greenies. I've seen it become almost a trend to say, "Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac" with people describing favorite bands. I just read where Paul Rodgers said that and it bummed me out.

The group I get annoyed with isn't on the list, but it is a sub-group of the Chiffonheads and the Buckyheads I suppose.
Sorry, but the Shippers usually annoy me. Not so much when they talk about how they think Stevie and Lindsey should get back together romantically or how they are secretly seeing each other blah blah blah....
But when they talk about song interpretations and lyrics. Yes, Stevie wrote Dreams about Lindsey, and yes, Lindsey wrote GYOW about Stevie, and they were both big hits. But they both can and have written about other people and other things. Not every song Stevie writes is about Lindsey and vice-versa. They broke up 30 years ago, and Stevie can't even remember why. Get a grip shippers.
Also, people who are supposedly fans and spell Lindsey's name Lindsay. That really irks me to no end. Pick up an album or a CD or read something about the band. It's spelled Lindsey.

Correct spellings of other band members' names who consistently get misspelled:
Billy Burnette (note trailing 'e' )
Danny Kirwan (not "Kirwin", "Kerwin" or "Kerwan")
Bekka Bramlett (note LACK of trailing 'e', note first name spelled with 'k's, not 'c's)
Bob Welch (not "Welsh" )
Also, those people who refer to Christine McVie as "Christy". She's NEVER gone by "Christy"...EVER! Either "Chris" or "Christine", that's it.

As far as Lindsey's name, I think most people know a "Lindsay" and, out of habit, are used to typing or writing it with an "a" and not an "e," and that's why that misspelling crops up so often.
I can't tell you how many times I have to stop myself from typing "Stevie" when addressing a "Steve." :o

I do that all the time too, esp at work.
But once in my life I actually got to use it. My best friend in high school's little brother was named Steve. I guess he was probably 13 when I was about 16, so not that little, relatively speaking. But Joe's parent's called him Stevie, so once I heard that, that was it! He was Stevie to me from then on.

I know of no shipper who asserts every song is about the other. Rather, most shippers I know - and there are few left around here - willingly acknowledge that many songs are about other people or things a la Illume, While Lotta Trouble, Leather and Lace, Rhiannon, etc. But, ya gotta admit, when La Nicks says not all but a bunch of songs on TISL are about LB, and TD and others on SYW are about him, it supports the shippers' point
As for the speculation, it can get annoying. But, I suppose one must remember that many things are never discussed on this or any other board I know. Also, I have seen things with my own two eyes that people say I didn't see and they were not even there
So, I take it all with a grain of salt.

Thanks for saying this. I made a mistake and used an a instead of an e because I was not used to writing out Lindsey's name. I am used to spelling Lindsay because I have two friends with that name. I sure did learn never to make that mistake on here. On another board I saw a poster call somebody a bitch for using an a instead of an e. People like that need serious help if they feel the need to be that rude over a misspelling.

I love your way of thinking because I am the exact same way. Yes, at first I was all about Stevie's songs because she was the reason I became a fan of FM. But I have never debated which line up was the best or put down other members of the band. I enjoy/dislike songs from all of the lineups and I could care less about who wrote it or produced it.

Exactly, strand. No one believes that every song Stevie writes is about Lindsey or vice versa, but whenever someone talks about how superior they are to "shippers" they almost inevitably use this as their justification. I guess setting up a straw man with an exaggerated mischaracterization is easier than actually addressing specific realistic points of dissent.

Crunchy Christlike toast...this is an education. I've been a serious fan without a community for ten years...I just got on boards and groups early last year. I had no clue about any of these goings on. I shouldn't be surprised, but I guess when you're the only one in your friends who's a fan and you get to the point where you'll settle for someone who thinks that that Seventeen song from School of Rock is a cool song to get your geek on with...and I so want to get my geek on...
Spelling of names - not here, but in general for me - are an annoyance. And thanks to this modern age where people are naming their kids Alesin and Q*Bert, it's just going to be more messed up. Traditionally, Lindsay's are female and Lindsey's are male. I'm picky on the spelling of names because my name is Neva and it's constantly being written as Nina, Nora, Neve, Norma, etc. And it will never be Niva.

I became aware of the sectarianism among those who claimed they like Fleetwood Mac almost as soon as I considered myself a Fleetwood fan. Although the delineations presented here don't exactly match what I remember, the general principles are similar: the anti-pop contingent, the airhead contingent, the anti-airhead contingent, the commerce-is-king contingent, the blues-is-the-dope contingent, etc.
Most of my life, I've been able to nicely sidestep the extremists, thanks to my abiding grasp of aesthetics & my background in music theory & history.
