The Ledge's Top 200 Albums of All Time

[foxyluva]

Im doing this over @ sevenwonders as well, and though I would bring it over here and hopefully liven things up :D

The rules are simple, list your top 5 albums of all time, you cannot repeat the same artist in your own top 5 even though it is a different album (i.e. you can't list Stevie Nicks twice) and you cannot list an album that somebody else has already listed previously. You must also continue the numbering (i.e. I do 1 - 5, the next person does 6 - 10, the next 11 - 15 etc...). Hopefully by the end of this will will have the boards top 200 albums or more...

Here we go (Oh yeah, and including cover pictures is recommended):

1. Stevie Nicks - Trouble in Shangri-La

^^^^ I'm glad someone got The Lion and the Cobra. Phenomenal album. Just like you said it would be is a sublime sing along.

I love me some Sinead O'Connor - I especially love her album "Faith & Courage" with my all time fave Sinead track "Dancing Lessons"

[GarboSpeaks!]

Dancing Lessons huh? Intersting pick. I could not even begin to name my fav Sinead song, but I too am quite a fan of hers. Just this evening I found 2 rare cd singles. Well, rare that you ever find anything if hers other than several 1000 tape copies of I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got...but GD, even THAT was a great album. Maybe my fav is I Am Stretched On Your Grave or Jerusalem. But the whole L&tC album ROCKS!
Singels found tonight were You Made me the Thief Of Your Heart & Famine b/w All Apologies. Interested to hear all the mixes.

[foxyluva]

^^^

I love 'I Do Not Want..." - a damn great album. Its a real shame that Sinead is one of those artists where the mainstream don't know her for anything else apart from "Nothing Compares" - which is such a beautiful song, but Sinead always had so much more.....

But yeah, 'Dancing Lessons' is my favourite Sinead track (possibly tied with 'Nothing Compares') I cannot stress the beauty of this song :)

[GarboSpeaks!]

Oh crap...I don't wanna high-jack as you put it xdwx

but a list CAN NOT be a list w/out XTC's Skylarking. OMG, WHERE is it? I need to edit................ lol

http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B00005ATHO.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

I remember someone giving me a tape that had Siouxsie on it...Dear Prudence, which actually, all these years later is my most detested SATB song, but more importantly (cause I was already into SATB) was XTC's, "Dear God" just a friggin great song. Along w/ World Destruction (John Lydon & Afrikka Bambatta) The Cure, Love Cats. Oh man...I am gonna make a comp cd, NO, make that a NEW COMP..... T A P E!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol

[foxyluva]

^^^^^We are going to have a disagreement here: I really dont like that album. Somebody recommended it to me, and I bought it because of what they said - and I utterly hated it :sorry: But I have kept it in the hope that it will one day grow on me....

[GarboSpeaks!]

HA! That's funny! It's WAY left field of what came out around the same time, IMO, and stands out as such. Dear God on it's own, makes it an album worth owning. But what Ballet for A Rainy Day, Grass, Summers Cauldonr..., I mean come on. It's almost like highschool, drama, theatrics in song form. There is just something endearing about it, althought andy & gang can sing (those unfamiliar w/ the album, that last description does not sum up the album, there is just this underlying element about the band). Would you rather Or Oranges & Lemons? Or REALLY earlybird XTC or none at all?

[amber]

Has anyone put any PJ Harvey albums yet? I didn't see any. I got turned on through a boyfriend, and don't really have the albums, but there was this one I thought was spectacular, the one with the song that said "Big fish little fish swimming in the water, come back here and gimme my daughter"
I loved that album (I think it was an album, and not a compilation he made) but you know me, I never buy stuff, or whatever. Anyway, I thought it was stellar. Dark, without being too creepy, and instead being darkly sensual. I noticed it because I don't like creepy things, but do like sensual things (think Tricky) and this was skirting the dark territory, but instead was brilliant, and just missed being too creepy/dark for my tastes.

Trackie? Anyone?

I'm suprised no one has put Bjork yet, either.

If I could add more, I might add:

Electriclarryland - Butthole Surfers.
But I can't.
I'd also add 2 Beck albums, especially that one. Mellow Gold? What the hell is it called? In the tradition of albums where you actually like all the songs. Truth be told, I might add all Beck albums.
And you know what? I also liked the entirety (rare) of that Cake album. That thing kicked ass!
Fashion Nugget
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/antisnark/c871948f4rc.jpg
I know, I'm cheating, sorry. But, I only know a few albums, so, it's over now.

[foxyluva]

I don't know how to answer that question

I do like "Dear God" - but I hear that on the radio every now and again, so I knew of it before I bought the album. The album actually makes me feel physically ill - some music has that effect on me, and that album happens to be a prime example.....

[amber]

I'm here! The PJ Harvey album you're thinking of is To Bring You My Love, which is an awesome record! The song is Down By The Water, which is very dark and sensual.

Bjork? I think Debut is probably a safe bet (it has Human Behaviour, Venus As A Boy, Big Time Sensuality on it) although I have a soft spot for Homogenic. Post is also good (It's Oh So Quiet, Army Of Me, Hyper Ballad, Isobel, etc)

Mellow Gold is Beck's debut album, and every song on that is fantastic. Also great is Odelay, but all his albums are good.
I love the Butthole Surfers btw. :D

And I love you.

You keep telling me the name of that pj album, and I keep forgetting! But I want it. And, I think it should be on here. Okay, I just wrote it on my pad. yeah. I just have to save this piece of paper now... And it was the album my bf had, and I did like the whole thing. To bring you my love is excellente, I just recalled.

I actually think I was thinking of Odelay, for Beck, not Mellow Gold, which is also good, but - I thought I loved his second album. yeah.

It's weird, where I am from, these would've already been mentioned, methinks. All of them. Even Cake. BTW, do you like Cake/Fashion Nugget? I hardly ever like whole albums, or even lyrics, but that one has got me on both counts. Brilliant lyricist, IMO.

Butthole Surfers. Not something in my usual vein, but my bf played it, loved it, and I actually liked it. It's pretty f-cking good.
I'm not a huge fan of Bjork, though I think she is exceptionally talented - I was just suprised no one had mentioned her.

What is your take on Tricky?

[amber]

Ah, fantastic choice!

It had Tangled Up in Blue, and Idiot Wind, so I had to. I was gonna pick Highway 61 Revisited, though. I like a lot of songs on that album. Especially Queen Jane (I don't know if that is the actual title) And then, I wanted greatest hits, but I figured there was an unspoken muso-ish rule about not picking greatest hits. It would be cheating. But there is a group of four or so that makes it hard to choose one. Desolation Row is a favorite, though i can't listen to it much. It is exceptional when someone is that brilliant. Honestly, I could've also picked a couple Simon and Garf albums that are amazing. Lyrically and musically. It really is rare for me to like a whole album.

Some of the artist mentioned I am hot/cold w/. The last one of topic, PJ Harvey. I do however LOVE Uh-Huh-Her. Start to finish...AMAZING! To Bring You My love, I have never heard all of, but liked what I had heard, and ofcourse loved that Big Fish song. Very cool. On the tails of that album, I saw her w/ Hole & Veruca Salt. Great show!!!!!!!!!

Cake...ADORE them! Lots and Lots of fun! I just could in no way pick an album, cause I am mostly ga-ga over their singles. I know that's not fair cause the have some really great tracks, but they are just FUN!

Beck, he was making music before he finally hit a mainstream audience...I liked him. Then he sorta vanished again...I haven't heard his last 2 ventures. Sort of lost interest. Am I missing out???? He's an unusual charachter as well!

Bjork...even if I don't like her music, I LOVE her. Just the neccessary addition to music to keep things from getting dull. I'd vote for Debut & Vespertine. Selma Songs, not for me, though Dancer in the Dark was amazing.

Lastly...Butthole Surfers "Pepper" I can listen to in constant loop. LOVE that song!

What. -_-

I would suggest not listening to any of their earlier albums, because Blake's alllllll over those.

 hooray! I hate saying U2 is overrated because "overrated" is overused, but it's true. Overall, their music is risible at best.

I think I actually hate Bono much more than the music. Perhaps that is unfair?
Hey, Mel Gibson is an alcoholic! I didn't know that!

[carrie721]

I think I actually hate Bono much more than the music. Perhaps that is unfair?

No, it's not, because he's made a point to be a personality outside of his music.

[amber]

Glad I'm not the only one, there always seems to be such a lot of U2 love on the board.
I think U2 seem to be doing the same old tune since Achtung Baby.
As for Bono, I admire in a way he's doing something and I don't mind bands getting political but still there's something objectionable about someone so ridiculously rich harping on about world debt.
Plus I hear stories about him all the time being not so nice in real life, so it probably clouds my judgement.

Remember that someone told us that really, the work he was doing wasn't a good idea, something about it going straight to the corrupt gov'ts of Africa instead of going to feed Africans? And how he knew that, or something?
I think it was Diss. But anyway, it fuels my belief in his idiocy.
Wow, you hear stories bout him being not nice? I never have, but then, why would I? Cool, glad to hear that.

[GarboSpeaks!]

I remember thinking in the 80's, "Hey this band U2 might go some where." Then in the 90's thru now, I curse my crystal ball. lol:laugh:

I can not stand them. ONE song I can deal w/ is Mysterious Ways. Thasabout it!

[xdreamsunwindx]

The only thing about the Sex Pistols is that I always think I enjoy the idea of them more than the music (and I love punk rock!). The Filth And The Fury, for instance, is one of my favourite ever music documentaries. My old boss, a proper old school punk rocker who saw all the bands of that ilk in their hey day, used to say that all you need to own of the Sex Pistols is the record God Save The Queen. I was shocked at the time for him to say that, but I do kinda see what he means.

That is kind of true, but I love that record nonetheless. The Pistols were kind of a gimmick when you think about it, but, eh. Pretty Vacant is one of my favorite songs ever.

The Clash on the other hand, well all those albums are essential.

Pretty much. The Clash are one of my all-time favorite bands. I don't think they've ever done a song that I truly dislike.

Shame no one got MC5 or The Stooges in this list.

I know, I suck :[ It was so damned hard for me to choose a Stooges record, as I love them all, and I totally forgot about the MC5. Kick out the jams, mother****ers, indeed.

[GarboSpeaks!]

I have a poster of this cover next to my computer. Are you jealous?

Reminds me a little bit too much of the twins from the Shining. Creeps me out =0p But ok, say the twins are all grown up, on the good side, and have a lead singer.....COOL poster. lol
