SEYMOUR, Ind. -- Indiana law enforcement agencies are embarking on a full-scale effort to find the person or persons who were involved in a series of sniper shootings on two interstates early Sunday morning that left one man dead and another man injured.

Indiana State Police, the Indiana National Guard, the Department of Homeland Security and local law enforcement agencies are involved or on notice for possible involvement in the investigation.

Ballistics evidence gathered from the scenes of the shootings on Interstate 65 in Jackson County and on Interstate 69 in Delaware County will be compared to determine what type of weapon was involved.

Police talked with officials from Arizona and Ohio, two state that have dealt with sniper shootings in the recent past.

"We're trying to get information from them that could possibly help us in our investigation here in Indiana," said Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin.

Police are also asking for help from the public. Road signs have been installed on highways asking people to watch for unusual activity on overpasses. Patrols have also been beefed up on interstates throughout the state.

"We have tapped every available trooper in the state of Indiana ... and they're going to be out there working over the next several days to let people know that it's going to be safe to drive up and down the roadway," Goodin said.

Jerry Ross, 40, of New Albany was killed in the first shooting at mile marker 52 on Interstate 65, near Seymour when the pickup truck he was riding in was fired upon. That shooting happened shortly after midnight. Two other people in that truck were not hurt

Moments later, another pickup truck was shot at. The driver of that truck stopped at a Shell station nearby and called 911. A bullet grazed Robert Hartl, 25, of Audubon, Iowa, near his ear. Hartl was not seriously injured.

About two hours later, more shootings were reported on Interstate 69 at mile marker 42 in Delaware County. A tractor-trailer and abandoned vehicle were fired upon. No one was hurt in those shootings.

Investigators stopped short of a definitive statement that the shootings, about 100 miles apart, are related, but are operating on the assumption that they are.

Investigators Gather Details Of Shootings

Police are not releasing much information about the ongoing investigation, but the focus has centered on interstate overpasses.

Investigators walked on overpasses both Sunday and Monday, hoping to retrace steps that the sniper or snipers might have walked.

Signs went up on highways across Indiana, warning about suspicious activity on overpasses.

Police said the shots could have been fired from overpasses, or could have been fired from the woods adjacent to the interstate.

Police asked businesses along I-65 and I-69 to save any surveillance tapes they might have from over the weekend. Investigators hope additional clues might be found on those tapes.

Investigators also asked motorists who have traveled I-65 and I-69 within the past week to inspect their vehicles for bullet holes. Officials advised that sounds that motorists might have thought were rocks could have been bullets.

Investigators asked anyone with information about the shootings to call the State Police Tipline at 1-800-622-4962. That number connects to the state police Task Force Hotline. Anyone who lives outside of Indiana should call 317-232-8250 with tips.

Gov. Mitch Daniels has pledged the support of the Indiana National Guard and the state Department of Homeland Security in assisting the state police in the investigation of Sunday's shootings.

"We will not treat this just as a criminal act. We'll use any and all resourced to find the person or persons responsible, and, in the meantime, we'll make sure people can go about their business safely and confidently," Daniels said in a statement released Sunday.

Indiana State Police briefed Daniels about developments in their investigation throughout the day.

I was slightly paranoid going to work this morning, but I'm only on 70 for about 5 minutes. I don't think there have been anymore shootings today. It's still scary as hell. Be careful out there, Homer!

Eh, we've only GOT 3 overpasses in B'ton!
Of course, there's still the possible theory that the bullets might've come from the woods......

And of course, that's the worst part. Not knowing. Staring at the overpasses for the next month......

Reminds me of the Washington DC sniper a few years ago.

What is the reason this society is so riddled with violent crime? Is it a byproduct of freedom? Is it the influence of do-goodism & rehabilitation? Some say it's the result of misery & poverty, & maybe some of it is. But snipers firing at random passersby on a freeway has nothing to do with misery & poverty.

How does a society legitimately & efficiently prevent outbreaks of psychopathology in individuals? I don't think it can be done. I think we are all of us at the mercy of psychopathic neighbors, & we always will be.

Well, isn't this EXACTLY the same as the killings by terrorists? How does the killing of INNOCENTS help you, or your cause. What kind of pleasure could anyone get out of killing innocent people?

Sick, hate filled minds.

They caught him. I think he has already been convicted. If I remember correctly, he had some sort of mental problems.

Be careful Homer & sara1998.

Thanks. I know I will. But really, in a situation like this, you can't be careful. It's all chance... place and time. I know I'm well aware of all the wooded areas I pass on the interstate daily! All this happened early Sunday morning, and there hasen't been any shootings since. Hopefully, they got their "jollies" and went away.

It was on the news tonight about the sniper in Ohio; they caught him and he's in a state mental facility because he was deemed mentally unable to stand trial.

That's the worst part of these types of crimes - the complete randomness - it's really scary.

When I was in Rochester, I was aware that it has the highest murder rate per capita in New York - BUT if you're not in the drug trade your chances of being murdered are decreased significantly -there are ways to be cautious etc...but something like a sniper - that is just so scary.

All in all the state of the world as it is right now scares the bejeezus out of me...:distress:

Police: 17-Year-Old Killed I-65 Motorist, Fired I-69 Shots

INDIANAPOLIS -- A tip led authorities to arrest a 17-year-old Indiana boy Tuesday in connection with Sunday's interstate highway shootings that killed one person and injured another, state police said.

Zachariah Blanton, of Gaston, was being held Tuesday afternoon in the Jackson County Jail on suspicion of shooting at two motorists -- killing one -- on Interstate 65 in southern Indiana and shooting at two vehicles on I-69 in east-central Indiana's Delaware County early Sunday.

State police said someone who knew Blanton, concerned that he was involved in the shootings, contacted a Delaware County reserve sheriff's deputy on Monday. That reserve deputy then contacted the Delaware County sheriff.

Investigators pursued the lead Monday night and searched Blanton's house, where they found a rifle that they believed -- based on ammunition fragments found in the attacked vehicles -- was used in the shootings, Indiana State Police Superintendent Paul Whitesell said at a news conference.

Blanton cooperated with investigators, and authorities gathered enough information to arrest him on charges of murder, attempted murder and criminal recklessness, Whitesell said.

When asked whether Blanton confessed, Whitesell answered: "It is my understanding that his cooperation was to such an extent that it was sufficient for probable cause, and I would call that a confession."

Whitesell declined to comment on whether investigators had information on a motive in the shootings. He said Blanton was the only suspect in the case.

Police: Shootings Began From Overpass

Police said they believe that shortly before the shootings, Blanton drove to an I-65 overpass and parked his vehicle. He then leaned across the vehicle's trunk and shot at a pickup truck passing below, fatally wounding Jerry L. Ross, 40, of New Albany at about 12:20 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Moments later, Blanton shot at another pickup truck on I-65, police said. That round grazed the ear of Robert John Otto Hartl, 25, of Iowa, but Hartl was not seriously injured, according to police.

State police said Blanton then drove to the Muncie area, where he allegedly shot at a tractor-trailer near the 42 mile marker of I-69 at about 2:30 a.m. No one was injured in that shooting.

Blanton then went a mile south and shot at a parked, unoccupied sport utility vehicle, police said.

Police said they wouldn't speculate on how the targets were chosen.

Authorities said Blanton is a student of Wes-Del High School in northwestern Delaware County. He was about to start his senior year there, 6News reported.

Police said they believe Blanton was familiar with the area where the I-65 shootings happened, having taken some hunting trips nearby.

Governor Thanks Investigators For 'Superb Police Work'

Gov. Mitch Daniels, speaking at the news conference, thanked state police and local and federal authorities for "superb police work" in the case.

"Indiana has now been spared, through the combined efforts of these outstanding professionals, the sort of fear, uncertainty and disruption that has befallen other jurisdictions elsewhere," Daniels said.

Whitesell said state, local and federal authorities were involved in the probe. Earlier in the week, state police consulted with law enforcement personnel who probed sniper shootings on I-270 near Columbus, Ohio, in late 2004 and early 2005.

I didn't hear that, and I've been watching local news all evening. I heard that the death penalty requires something like "forethought, and intent", and sitting and focusing through a scope certainly seemed to make the death penalty applicable.
