I have always loved this song, not hurt by the fact that it contains one of my all time favorite lyrics:
If I had known this was only a dream, I would have waken from this sleep
Then again, I love just about everything Buckingham has ever recorded, so I'm just a little biased.

I like it quite a lot. The music of it is unusual. The vocal grates fey like in some parts, and sometimes it's a little plinky plink for my mood, but overall I think it's exceptional.

Not sure.
My Buckingham obsession is waning, so I'm a bit rusty on my trivia.

Strange song, but then again - its totally something Lindsey would do
I love the guitar riff in this song - one of his best!

I hardly ever listen to it ... it's a little strange to me. I do love Goodbye Angel on the boxest, though.

I like it a lot - one of his better songs to my non-Buckingham-Nicks-obsessed mind. It reminds me of old Steve Miller songs :)

I thought it was a Mirage cut?

I thought it was a Mirage cut?I believe Peter Lewry listed it as a 'Mirage' outtake in his book, 'Fleetwood Mac: The Complete Recording Sessions, 1967-1997,' but that's incorrect.

Sounds more like an 1987-ish era track that didnt make the Tango album perhaps?

This song would have to be post-1990, since it is (at least, seems to ME, anyway) a dig at Fleetwood Mac & Behind The Mask.
And, Lindsey is playing a sitar on this one...at least, the main riff of the song is played on it.
Make Me A Mask was recorded during the Out of the Cradle era. Probably Lindsey decided not to put it on the album because it didn't really "fit" with the other songs, I suppose.

To answer your question, and since I don't know alot about the particulars of what era, which demo, what instruments, etc., I have always loved this song from first listen. It's classic Lindsey layering, coupled with some great lyrics, this song has a very mystical feel. It's one of few FM/SN/LB songs I always just sit and listen... don't try to sing or thump along to, just listen... mesmerized. It's a good feeling every time. I really like songs like that and there are very few that have that effect for me. In fact, must find my copy and put it in the changer now. Thanks for bringing it up! :D

Although the liner notes on the boxed set doesn't say it, I also have an Australian 2 CD issue called Fleetwood Mac, Selections from 25 Years, which says "From the Album Mirage" on the liner notes to "Make Me a Mask."

I looked all over my Mirage album just now & I didn't find it listed!
I don't think it's from the early '80s. I think it's from the late '80s or early '90s. Didn't Lindsey mention the track in a magazine interview at some point?
Also, does anyone hear a shamisen or a koto on this track? or is that just the sitar? This track may foreshadow Lindsey's conscious delving into Asian atmosphere & musical structure--with a minor twist on the traditional five-tone scale--on the "Tango in the Night" album. Even the lyrics have a Japanese compactness & focus on nature. Was Lindsey listening to Kitaro or Sakamoto?
To answer the question of "how do I know" it's an OOTC song, you'll just have to take my word. I remember reading about it once in a discussion either here or maybe on the Legacy a while back, and someone I believe posted a magazine interview or something where Lindsey comments that the song was recorded during the OOTC sessions. I remember thinking, "Wow, that song would have been cool on OOTC," but I don't remember when or where it was. Sorry if this is "unreliable" to anyone here, but then again, who can say anything for sure with this spastic band we all love and obsess over?

From the San Francisco Chronicle, March 7th, 1993 (http://bla.fleetwoodmac.net/index.php?page=index_v2&id=120&c=9)....
(Buckingham) said that he had very little input on the recently released Fleetwood Mac anthology, "25 Years -- The Chain," even though he included a new track for the collection. "All I did was OK some of the mixes. I haven't even heard it. I recorded 'Make Me a Mask' during the sessions for 'Cradle.' It really didn't fit on the rest of my album, so I gave it to the anthology."
Thanks, JohnnyStew, for saving my dignity on that one! :D

Sitar, sitar & a sitar (pardon the redundancy, my initial reply was "too short" according to the site's posting restrictions)
