This song came up in Carrie's B-day thread...
Noooo! Black Velvet was by Alanna Myles (?) and was a hit in the...early 90's I think you are right about that. I never saw the video, thank god, my friends have told me it was terrible. Thank you, mom, for withholding TV and cable.

I don't have the Mp3, so horrible video or not, here it is:
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/eiT9rHqzi0Y"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/eiT9rHqzi0Y" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

But her voice is gorgeous. It's husky yet smooth. It's not a power ballad. I can't believe you haven't heard it! I'm shockled!
You would love to sing it. It's like that.
I don't have it, which I hope someone will rectify, or I would share.

Oooh, look at all teh hair and studs! She is beautiful, but chaps don't look good with those high-waisted pants. She does have a powerful voice. I think I was listening to Dead Can Dance and Nick Cave, and other moody stuff in '90 when the song came out. I didn't listen to radio that year, and had no tv, so I missed it.

me too. and I dont mind the video either :)

edit: I just watched it again and I actually like her look! its so 80's and I just can't help myself, I love 80's looks! I love the big hair and the high heels etc....and Alannah looks smokin' I think! as for the high waisted pants/chaps, the pants were ALL high waisted then  I dunno, I just like the whole badgirl attitude she's putting out...

It is a great song. Stevie covered it at a benefit or some corporate show but no audio ever surfaced! :(

Every time I think of Alannah Myles I think of Sandra Bernhard.

When Alanna was hitting big I saw Sandra in an interview and she was asked about Alannah and Sandra said when she first heard the womans name on the radio she thought the announcer said her name was "Alot of Miles". At the time It was hilarious... and coming from Sandra, it was.

How weird ... this thread was the last thing I read before I left to walk my friend's dog, and what was the first song I heard when I turned on my car? Black Velvet! Creepy ...

I have a couple of Ms. Myles albums - There is alot more and possibly even better material than just 'Black Velvet' on both of them, but especially 'Rockinghorse' - quite a nice pop album :D
