Wondering how many of our gay Ledgies are out in their "real" lives? Obviously, if this is too personal, you don't have to answer. I'm just curious.

How old were you when you knew you were gay? How about when you came out? How did people react? Are you out to your family, friends, workplace, some or all of these?

I knew when I was in 7th grade, and I wanted to stay inside and play with my sister's stuff rather than go out and play football with the guys. Plus, the kid that sat next to me was kinda cute. :o

All of my friends knew I was gay like, last yearish. I didnt really need to tell them anything, as I guess I'm pretty obvious. And when I started going out with Brad, I guess that was the reassurance they needed. :p I still havent told my parents, and dont intend to either, because A) It's none of their business, and B) I dont think they'd care anyways.

"You know, I think-uh...everybody...little bit gay"- Margaret Cho impersonating her mother.

I pretty much knew when I was 12, but didn't come out until I was 17.

Most of my family knows (the ones that care) and all of my friends know. I'm out at work, too. The majority of my co-workers are female, so that has helped tremendously. One lady made me a home made birthday card with the Golden Girls on it. If that isn't gay love, I don't know what is. ;)

I am now in a 4 year long relationship with a man I love but do wonder what else there could of been!?

Mmm. I have known for a long time - but cannot pinpoint it. I am out to most people, but I do not feel the need to broadcast it - I will tell people if they ask. But in saying that - my best friend still doesn't know! I've known her since we were newborns - and its harder to tell the ones you are closest to. So yeah - all of my good friends know apart from my besty!

My mother knows because she asked me, she doesn't want me to tell my Dad - My mother told my grandmother, so there have been a few uncomfortable conversations taking place. My mother and grandmother both ignore the fact that I am gay, and we have not spoke about it for about a year and a half - I guess its easier for them to deal if they don't deal  My brother is an idiot - because he has seen my gay newspapers and he has heard me say that a guy is hot - and still hasn't put two and two together

My first roommate was a lesbian (still is I'm sure ;) ) and she couldn't find a way to tell her mom even though she thought there was a chance she would be okay with it. So one Christmas, when she was 17, she gave her mom a bunch of presents. The last one was a book, titled something like "How parents accept their gay children". Her mom burst into tears and once she calmed down, put her arms around her. They've been alright ever since.

I thought that was a very bold way to out herself, but for someone who just couldn't say the words, I thought it was the right thing to do. Her mom had an immediate reference as to how to deal!

She had thought about saying it all "subliminally". She thought she could be at the dinner table, chatting away and then say "so I'm a lesbian, could you pass the salt?"   That would've been damn funny.

I've known forever, but I didn't really accept it about myself until I was, oh, 19. I told some of my friends when I was 20, and I never told my parents, but my mom asked me about the rainbow sticker on my car, and then promptly freaked out. She's okay with it now, but it really wasn't pretty at first ...

Now most of the people I work with know, and most of my friends. I don't broadcast it, aside from the small rainbow bumper sticker on my car. My mom doesn't understand that about me - she doesn't get why I just like to be "Carrie" instead of "GAYCarrie." Oddly, even though she freaked out when I told her, she's the GSA advisor at her school. :shrug"

I didn't know you were gay! I was just about to say "oh, it's too bad you weren't around when Hillary was" then I realized you are totally friends with her. Duh-huh, Der.
I'm glad it worked out, your mom sounds pretty cool. My mom asked me if I was gay in highschool. *So.Embarrassing*.

So, what's your style? This town is like, lesbian mecca of the world, I love it (Except when two groups of lez at my neighborhood gay bar get mad at me simultaneously for accidentally taking a cig, and other reasons I have no idea about, because I'm a friendly drinker, then the doorman says I have to leave. That was just the one time.),
I see every style. I'm only saying that because I like styles in general - clothes, jewelry (peircings), hair. There is a good variety here. There's all these cute short haired asian lezzies - I just notice because it's hard to look good with short hair...

Dude, my mom has been asking me since, like, 7th grade if I was gay. She read my journal in 8th grade and I said something about maybe being gay, and she totally freaked out and stayed up crying until like, 4 a.m. begging me to tell her if I was. My mom can be cool, but ... she can also not be.

I don't really have a "style," which is why a lot of people are surprised when they find out. I'm not butch, I'm not femme, I'm not a man-hater, and I haven't been on a date in ... uhh ... let's change the subject.

carrie721
07-21-2006, 12:37 AM
So your style is just regular. Do you have long hair? Do you like clothes, and look hot, or not care so much? Do you look so regular as to be indistinguishable? No secret nipple piercing? (It does make them look better, btw). I guess so, you said people are usually suprised.

Did you tell your mom you were at the time? Guess not?

My mom is mad at me now because I haven't had a child.
oops, didn't mean to talk about non-out things.
You should come out for TP in Sept. Oh, you'll have a date then! :p There is hella pretty lesbians here, too. This one gorgeous one with long curly dark hair, and exotic features asked me out once. I was like "damn! You're so pretty I wish I wanted to go out with you!"

Haha. Yeah, I'm sure my mom will be mad at me if I never have kids, too. I totally want to go to TP ... I'll PM you.

Oh, and yeah, I guess I'm regular. I have long hair (well, shoulder-length), and although I'd never describe myself as hot, I'm also not fug. I like to look girly.

well...ok you're actually right.

I've been all over with myself on the sexuality thing - and now I don't label - I take things as they come. Many don't believe bisexuality exists - but from first hand experience it's possible to be sexually attracted to and even fall in love with someone of either sex. I've been there.

But in high school when there is so much pressure to fit into one group or another I came out as a lesbian - I was so out and obnoxious - had a big old gay crowd though - it was a really cool time actually. I had a big rainbow patch on my backpack, wore freedom rings, cut my hair - thought I had to fit into a stereotype...

Now - I just sort of go with the flow...though after being burned and I mean BURNED by one evil and horrid (yet oh so wonderful) woman - I haven't really had the energy to go that route....of course I'm also in the midst of one of the worst dry spells in human history.

Anyway, I digress...I was totally not subtle about it - not at school anyway - at home I was dropping mad hints (of course the giant Melissa Etheridge poster should have tipped my mom off a little) - and finally my sister asked me if I was gay - I said I was....she was supportive but had a rough time with it.

My mom? CRIED CRIED CRIED. Then called my aunt's (by marriage) sister who is a transexual to ask her what to do about me  Rose laughed at my mom...then my mom started going to PFLAG :D

Fast forward several years...I've been in serious relationships with both men and women - I don't so much feel the need to "label" myself anymore - so I don't so much feel the need to "come out" in any way.

I don't mean to jump on your post, but how did PFLAG work for your mom? I've always wondered. What do they say? It must have been hard for your mom, I'm assuming she's pretty catholic and traditional? Hopefully by doing so not making an *ass*out of *u* and *me*.

There was a lesbian in my school, and on my softball team, and then way later I saw her in Berkeley. With a boyfriend. She never said she was, but she acted overtly sexually strange. But she was totally weird. I mean, she would talk about weird sexy things in the locker room, and walk around naked, and...invite people to slumber parties at the same time. but besides that, she had no social skills, which was actually the real problem. I don't think many people would have cared about her lesbionicness, but she was so weird with everything.
Also? She sucked! She was a catcher, and she sucked. So people didn't like her for that.

I had seen her around since I was young, since Bobbysox (girls softball league, small town) and she was always weird, and always sucked. :( She was red haired and freckled and big, too. :distress:
But I digress.

Well for all intents and purposes my mom is Catholic - but as my sister and I say she follow the Gospel According to Marie - and has always sort of made up her own rules :D

So PFLAG was hard at first - but I was lucky that she did have gay friend and acquaintences - it was just harder because it was one of her kids - but once she got through the first couple of PFLAGS (which she cried the whole way through) they were really good for her. The people were so supportive and amazing - a good mix of parents, friends and actualy gays

She still keeps in touch with some of the people from our PFLAG days and always tells me when she runs into them...

However, all coolness goes out the window the minute I say I'm interested in or am dating a woman

The only people I am out to is the online world and that is just recently. I don't think I could ever picture myself coming out to my friends and family. Its just so hard. My dad would be upset, my mom would probably be like "I knew it". I think i might lose some friends, not because they are assholes but because theu just don't want to hang out with the gay kid. I would be paranoid in school like everyone is looking at me because I can out. Same with like family parties...i think my moms side of the family would be very surprised an kind of upset. I can see myself coming out at college. Its just such a hard topic and my answer is I really don't know. You would never know id you met me in person. I'm very straight on the outside.

Stuff I wanted to add:

Do you know how hard it is to meet someone in my place??? I am always with friends so its like forget it. Whenever I go out alone I never see anybody that really catches my interest. yet when I am with friends I am being checked out LOL (well one time). So I am single at the moment.

I'm fully out, I've known since I was about 12 or 13 and had the wandering eye in the locker room during P.E. At first I thought I was bi since I still had an interest in girls, but in the last couple years I've pretty much given up on that angle.

My parents have known since I was 17, but I didn't tell my friends until a short while ago. Sexuality was just one of those things you kept hush-hush at my high school. You wouldn't believe how many of us there were though, nowadays I see all kinds of people I graduated with who turned out to be gay or bi.

This maybe part of the process, but on many occasions, people I only kind of know (At work...etc) have come up to me (out of the blue) and confessed a bunch of stuff including that they were gay. Very weird, perhaps they see me as a father confessor type? They know I am straight, and during chit-chat they bring up deep stuff on their minds. I have rarely said much to any of them in the past (except normal work stuff) and I am thinking "This is more information than I really needed." I guess it helped to have someone to listen, but seemed a close freind or family member would be the place for this, rather than an someone you don't really know.

I knew when I was about 12 or so. And I didn't come out so much as just move to a town 500 miles away from my family. And I didn't have any friends in my hometown to come out to. After I moved to Austin, I only made friends with gay people, so I don't have any straight friends here to come out to, either. I don't really socialize with the people I work with, although I have told some co-workers (who I knew wouldn't care anyway).

I think it would be kinda cool to have some straight friends, but it seems like everyone I meet whom I have anything in common with turns out to be gay. Even my minister is gay.

How old were you when you knew you were gay?
I began to look at guys willies in bathrooms when I was probably around 7 or 8 years old...I didn't understand why I had to look but I always did. Then I began to get aroused by the site of them in the lockerroom in 6th grade. But I didn't like the idea of being gay so I kept tight hold of a crush I had on a girl in high school - not that anything came of it, but by the time I was a senior in high school I knew I was 100% homo. I decided when I left to college I would be out. But that actually came much later.
How about when you came out?
I officially came out at the age of 25 when I moved to Dallas.
How did people react?
Everybody was absolutely cool with it. I have 5 brothers and 2 sisters. My sisters are all into whatever makes me happy and want to hear about it anytime. Two of my brothers are really cool with it and the others are fine but we don't discuss personal issues. My mom is totally fine and wishes I would move back home with my partner, and my dad likes him too. His parents are the same way, they always want us to visit which makes it nearly impossible for he and I to have holidays together. Still we count ourselves lucky and are grateful to have the love of our parents and families since we've been together for almost 16 years.
Are you out to your family, friends, workplace, some or all of these?
Yes all of the above. However at work, it's almost a "don't ask, don't tell" situation. My bosses all know and they are cool. Most everyone here at work is very republican and conservative but they seem to ignore that I'm gay because I'm not flaming or obvious about it. Plus everybody likes me - I'm pretty cool and reliable. But I'm sure they all know through the grapevine that I'm gay because in the ten years I've worked here - not one person has asked me if I have a girlfriend.

I officially came out at the age of 25 when I moved to Dallas.

I am 100% out. I dont tell anyone that I am. But if they ask I have no problem sharing. For some reason, alot of people I tell are very surprised I'm gay. I guess I dont fit the stereotype or something.
I'm out on a need to know basis, but I don't necessarily hide it.

It's weird because I actually came out to the CEO of the newspaper where I'm the managing editor. In other facets of my life, I hadn't told more than one person at karaoke until I found out a lot of them go on MySpace. One of my best friends at karaoke sent me an inbox message titled "Orientation" and expressed surprise that she didn't know, but she was cool about it.

My dads know (my dad's also gay, obviously). My cousins on my other dad's side of the family know. That's the extent of the people in my family I've come out to. That's all that needs to be done as far as I'm concerned.

i'm definitely more straight than gay - more than a 2 on the kinsey scale.

i've never carried on an actual relationship with a woman, and she'd have to be amazing for me to be that interested. but attraction-wise, i've totally obsessed over ladies.

and to the previous poster who hadn't told his best friend: i was that best friend and it was really hurtful to not know when everyone else did. i realize that things have to happen on your own terms, but that's not always fair. IMO.

ps is jim the only straight guy hangin' around these days? :p
