I don't normally start use threads for questions like this, but wondering if anyone out there has stayed at the Ramada Plaza New Yorker near Penn Station.

I need to stay at a hotel in NY next week and prices are sky high! That seems to be the only one under $200 that looks tolerable. I've heard to stay away from Hotel Pennsylvania.

Anyway, if anyone has insight on this hotel, or any suggestions for other cheapish hotels, can you please post or IM me?

:)

I don't stay at a hotel when I visit NY - not after a friend turned me onto a place called House of the Redeemer. I can't remember where it is - but I know it has a website.

It's an Episcopal Retreat House  BUT you don't have to be Episcopal or on a retreat. It's very affordable for NY - but you have to pay by cash or check - and you have to send a deposit to hold the rooms - but it's so peaceful - and clean..and in a great area - it's right across from Central Park - it's on either the upper East or West side I think...

Anyway - it's definitely not for everyone - but I had the best time staying there...

Good luck!!

there's a Holiday Inn in Chinatown near Canal Street that is a great deal, very clean and in the middle of everything. you can catch the subway on the corner and go uptown.

The Ramada and the Pennsyvania ar about the same quality.

I would check expedia and travelzoo regularly to see if aany deals pop up elsewhere in the Times Square area.

I went to NY foe the first time in May, so I only have a limited view if the lay of the land. I stayed in Tribeca at a wonderful hotel. I think it was fairly pricey, but it was payed for through work so I'm not sure.
So wherever you do end up staying, I would recommend going for a cocktail and a bite to eat at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. It is absolutely wonderful there and I'm sure we all expect a full report back on your trip!

I went to NY in late may. Yes, prices are high expensive, so I looked for hostels in the web and finally found this. It was clean (very important!). $95 per night double room with NO BATH. 4 shared bath per floor. A cool kitchen in the 1st floor.

Guests from all the world (Europe, Japan, SouthAm, etc)
Actually it was very good, not full so I never had to wait for bathroom. It was the cheapeast decent place I could find, and.. it was VERY GOOD LOCATED, for my purposes. IT was half block from Times SQ. near all main theatres. I really recommend it, if you accept hostels.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I will check out all recommendations. What sucks is that I had a two night reservation at the Hudson for $179/night, but I can now only go for one night and they wouldn't just cut the reservation. They said I had to cancel and then rebook one night at $350. As if.

Unless I'm missing something those rates are really low for NYC - especially since it's in a wonderful area, it's clean, peaceful and you get full kitchen usage

No kids because, well, kids are generally loud. I've yet to meet a kid that isn't - and it's a retreat house first and foremost, so at any given time you may be staying there with people who are paying to be there as a retreat :o We had to shut my grandma up a few times as she was walking down one of the corridors singing

Anyway - it's definitely not for everyone but I love staying there.

I know someone who used to stay at the La Quinta on W. 32nd. It's pretty basic, but I hear they have some kind of a rooftop bar or lounge or something. Anyway, if it's available, it will definitely be well under $200/night.

I see that the Washington Square Hotel is also available for a day or so next week. It's smack dab in the middle of the Village in a large Greek Revival townhouse. And very reasonable (well, relatively):

I know NOTHING about the St Marks Hotel, but it's at the gateway to the East Village. And right around the corner from Dojo's, which has great, healthy ethnic eats and booze for real cheap. Also a good/cheap falafel place at the end of the block. Veselka on E. 9th is also a must-visit, and it's open 24 hours. And my favorite vegetarian restaurant, Anjelika's Kitchen, on E. 13th... sigh...

There's always priceline or hotwire. But just be careful about getting a hotel on the far east side (east of Third Ave.), especially north of midtown. The public transportation is far away and always crowded. There's also craigslist; it seems like there is always some shady NYer trying to make an extra buck subletting their overpriced apartments. :p

Thank you! I'll check these out. I booked a reservation at Holiday Inn on 57th for $199, but still looking for something better/cheaper. I'm just there for the day to see a play, so convenient location to theater and cleanliness are most important.

Oh, and I had a very bad experience once with the subletting thing you referenced.

Hotel prices have really skyrocketed. From 2002-2005, I could always stay at a nice hotel for $150-$175.
