How I missed this when it aired, I don't know. Lifetime's "Girls & Guitars" special. Anyone know when it was on TV? A few years ago? Many years ago? Anyway, I thought this was absolutely incredible.

Ann Wilson has one of the best voices I have ever heard and it has changed little in 30 years. Has anyone ever heard her vocal on Unchained Melody
Sadly, she looks horrifying in this clip.

I know. I think she's beautiful no matter what weight she's at, yet she always does these odd things with her hair that make her look ridiculous. And the hippie sunglasses. Oy.

I actually was at the taping of this! They do the show as a benefit for breast cancer every year - this year it was Melissa Etheridge.
I think this one was 3 years ago - it was amazing - Cyndi actually took over
the show at one point coaching Destiny's Child on harmonies - she was the most professional one there!

That's wild, I was just looking at this the other day! I had just finished reading about how Joni Mitchell came to buy a dulcimer, and how it was tuned for "California"; I found a video of her playing it on YouTube, and there must have been a tag that led me to this Cyndi/Ann video. Cyndi shows off some effortless high notes, and lovely, full lows. I think she has taken really good care of her body and her voice.
It is pretty wild to see Nancy power strumming next to the dulcimer, and Ann's hair is unreal!

Yeah, I have this show on tape somewhere. The whole show was really good.

SO HOT !
Okay, Y'all made me do it. I have been on a Heart jag the last two days. I listened to this song 7 times today. I had totally forgotten about it. Please note : I don't particularly like this song. It's a cover. However, it is a showcase for the nuclear reactor that is Ann Wilson's voice. Also noteworthy, it is LIVE, and she probably wasn't anywhere near the county line of sober.
The really incredible thing about it is this : You would never expect this out of Ann. Die hards have heard this. But others never have. Just note what happens about 2/3 of the way through. Especially singers. You think she has completely exhausted herself. She is winded. She lets this vibrato riff fly and it sounds like she has completely taxed her chest voice. A normal human being would have.
Not the ANN. She hints at her head voice earlier in the song. And then when you think she can't possible let fly with any more passion and emotion, stand the f*ck back. Most people have some light, silly little falsetto head voice.
We're not talking about most people. This is mind blowing. The trills and scales usually annoy me. The girls who do it now do it with zero emotion, no thought, too much structure, and no rock and roll. It's all showing off. This woman sounds as if she didn't sing this, she may well explode. She goes from a growl, to a shriek, to a mini aria in about 30 seconds. Behold, the wonder that is her voice :

This is outrageous! I don't dislike this song, but I think of it as a snoozer, and I usually tune out when it comes on. She completely rewrote this song for me.
Somehow she mangages to sound like she is ripping up her cords one minute, and then she comes out with these beautiful, pure tones. And she has done this for decades!
I was listening to "Dreamboat Annie" the other day, and I was surprised to remember how mellow and sweet her voice could sound, and then I spent the day with "Crazy On You" and I was blown away by the unhinged power in her voice, and now this amazing track.
I say Karen Carpenter + Janis Joplin + Patti Labelle + WTF? = Ann Wilson
a sidenote: when I looked at your post I was reviewing tracks from tonight's band rehearsal, and I was thinking "say, these tracks are getting pretty good, Eliza, your voice sounding pretty decent." Then I downloaded the "Unchained Melody" and I can't listen to anything else tonight. Thank you.
I think.
No, really thank you for sharing it!

I wish I could have summed up my reaction so succinctly. That is a great way of describing it!:blob2:

Okay, this is the only version of this song I will ever listen to again. Where did Ann get those pipes? Unbelievable. I am stunned, really stunned.

I listen to this almost daily on my Ipod while on the Stairmaster - and imagine what it would be like to sing like that!!!!!!
Hands Down one of the best vocals I have ever heard in my life!
AND - I believe this was recorded when she was no spring chicken!

Vocally, she can pretty much make anyone feel like a pipsqueak.

That is sheer genius.
