what's this song about...do you think? I think it's one of Stevie's greatest unknowns.

Well, It's always been one of my favorites but truly, the lyrics are so filled with imagery that I really think only Stevie and her closest friends know the meaning behind the song...I'm sure the line..."darker than the image on the wall (the mirror on the wall) is the fear of it all" probably might suggest her being haunted with her image to the point of almost paranoia. Something that touches deep in her soul.... the darkness of her songs, the darkness of her image and her music....She's so haunted! I love it!
...You MUST know....He said no, not really.

I hate when most fans think every song is about Lindsey.
BUT..I think this one is about Lindsey. "I think you walk a thin line"
Lindsey sings I walk A Thin Line on TUSK.
He said "See ya!" - he left FM.Mirror Mirror was the original title of Rock A Little..FYI.

I always thought it was so strange that they chose to release a song Stevie recorded in 1985 as the B-side to a 1994 release. And those 2 songs so don't go together, Blue Denim and Mirror Mirror. Mirror Mirror is so RAL and should have been on the album. It's like "for Klonopin Stevie please listen to the A-side and for coked out Stevie please refer to the B-side"

Record companies want you to buy the single, and this is just a little bonus, something unreleased. If you are a fan you'll buy the album, and if the b-side to the single was on the album, there would be no need to buy it, but if there is an unreleased track, or an alternate version, it just entices you to go for it.

To me, this is one of the most frustrating tracks that Stevie has ever recorded. I love the music. The guitar riff is monstrous and catchy. The cheesy synths swell with drama and foreboding. She sings the **** out of it. A few of the lyrics hint at an eruption of fury, rage, and explosive revelation, then....nothing. There is no meat to the story. It hints at things. It presents dramatic and vague images. The music builds toward a bombastic and shocking chorus, bridge, or something. But it peters out and never quite delivers. Never has a song promised so much and delivered so little. This song is all foreplay and no climax. It is the musical equivalent of blue balls.

I always thought that "Mirror Mirror" as it appeared on the flip side of "Blue Denim" was re-recorded for the TimeSpace album, and was ultimately not included on that album. If you listen to the vocals, they are so much more early 90s Stevie vocals than RAL-era vocals. And the version that appeared on the single sounds nothing like any of the RAL-era demos floating out there.

THAT IS SO TRUE!
She had trouble cramming so many lyrics into one cohesive song.
The official lyrics of Mirror/Mirror contain more information than the B-side that was released on Blue Denim. It always struck me as an incomplete song.
The demos have most of the original lyrics intact..take a listen.

We met right after the 'Dance' tour, and we were so deeply in love that we talked about spending the rest of our lives together. When she left me to go on the 'Enchanted' tour, it broke my heart so deeply that I swore off of women for good.

that whole "bird in flight" thing seems to really describe Lindsey, plus the fact that his mom rutheda used to say to him "You are like a cat in the dark," & then sometimes his brother would add: "No, mom, but he is the darkness." I suspect that Lindsey figures prominently in Rhiannon as the Welsh mabinogion goddess of steeds & placer of bets & so forth.

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but the music to Mirror Mirror was inspired by the music in the film Risky Business - the scene with Tom Cruise and Rebecca Demornay (?) on the train together (getting dirty).
Also, when Stevie was watching Risky Business at her house with a bunch of friends, she supposedly called up a car dealer and ordered a rose/pink Porsche (like in the movie) sight unseen.

(Tangerine Dream sounds to me as if it were influenced by the minimalist movement--John Adams' "Shaker Loops" & Steve Reich's "Variations for Winds, Strings & Keyboards," with their unrelenting pulse & endlessly repeated figures.) Well, I never thought that a standard from the Rodgers and Hart songbook was arcane and obtuse. Perhaps I am getting everything confused. Or maybe I am just once again miscronstruing friendships for something else. Arcane and obtuse- give me a break.... Obtuse??? Oy.
I don't do musicals. So it was to me. Aren't arcane and obtuse totally David words ? If obtuse isn't then obstruse certainly is.
Yes, you could- and why would you???
I have been talking to her a lot. It's rubbing off. There is AMber friggin all over me. On my clothes, in my hair. And just a lot of cross post referencing.
It is tough for me to keep up with all this. I think I am reading too much.
Capricorns are notorious for being unfeeling and missing the point.
I nearly always get the point. Unfeeling ? Fleetingly. The opposite is usually more accurate, when appropriate.
It probably doesn't matter anyway.....
Damn. That sounds a line out of a Stevie demo. You are so dramatic lately.

That is so funny ! Your normal tends toward sensitive if you're in a mood.
I have seen you go on for page after entertaining page after such a slight or misunderstanding has occured. Which, of course, makes you more adorable to me. And entertaining.:woohoo:
Well, yes, that can be true - but at least some percentage of what I react to seems like something any normal human would react the same to - I just tend to not let it go, have to see it to it's resolution, argue and argue! It's my Sagittarius coming out...(hi, Strand!)
I'd also like to add that I am not the be all and end all of spotting spelling mistakes, so if you wouldn't use my name to verb that quality, that would be awesome. I do mispell things. I hate it, but it happens. And, as we all know, I break grammar rules left and right for the sake of...uh...Stevieing. Ooo, that can be a verb! Breaking grammar/tense rules = Stevieing! YES!
In conclusion, you guys shouldn't fight. Sparky, I think, is a bit more rugged in his gayosity, so may not understand Tower's musical reference. I mean, Sparky is basically a gay red/brownneck. Which is, of course, why I love him. I know sparks would swim the river and throw the football and camp with me. Tower probably knows more musical stuff, being a musician. Probably more "gay" musical stuff. I'm just theorizing, I'm no gay man. But Tow would totally sing some harmony part of some choir Xmas song with me, and he knows bunches of other music stuff besides. Important music stuff. Eclectic music stuff.
It all works out.

Well, it sounds like that lulling, narcotizing Tangerine Dream sound. (Tangerine Dream sounds to me as if it were influenced by the minimalist movement--John Adams' "Shaker Loops" & Steve Reich's "Variations for Winds, Strings & Keyboards," with their unrelenting pulse & endlessly repeated figures.) Who actually played or wrote (or programmed) the Mirror Mirror stuff? The producer? Christopher? Who was the producer?
Hey-you know what, I just looked up the soundtrack at amazon, and the music in that scene is actually done by Tangerine Dream (I had no idea who it was prior to today). Here is a clip:

Great, now I'm some kind of heinous anal spelling disease. Don't blame me, own your own spelling sense!
SEE? Sensitive ! You corrected a spelling mistake, I saw it, and I felt compelled to do the same. It's an impulse to mimic. It's flattery, Frank.
The mistake is judging when feelings are "appropriate". You can't, you shouldn't, it's a fallacy.
I think you misunderstand me, even though I wasn't really addressing you, pumpkin. I was speaking about my own feelings. If I deem my own feelings inappropriate, then I am free to do or not do as I see fit with them.
I think you are the same unfeelingness/feelingness, but just happened to cross wires on this one. I actually think you are both very compassionate. Sparky tends to call out his friends as being sapulous, whereas Tower tends to call out people he doesn't like as much for being lame. But you both have done the opposite, too. When Tow teases me, I just think he's teasing, when Spark does it, I usually get more feelings hurt. I don't know why, I'm not saying it's right, I'm just telling y'all. Neither of you has said anything that ghastly, anyways. (don't pretend you aren't delighted that I used the word ghastly).
I prefer the more impersonal, Towie way, but - honestly - cum see, cum sah. No, wait, I mean - potayto, potahto (let's call the whole thing off).
Why the essay ? Who's fighting ?
Don't call someone else dramatic as an insult
HA. You filtered that as an insult. It was no different than saying "You are in such a great mood lately." If that sentence was followed by a 'therefore.....' it was in your mind. You provided the implication ! Sparky didn't.
Why am I having this complicated conversation, anyway ?

Who did I insult ? I enjoy insulting people, and usually remember when I do it.

Yeah I read it in an interview somewhere, I can't remember exactly where though. I think the interview was done around the time OSOTM was released. I had seen the movie Risky Business years before, but after I read this interview I rented the movie from Blockbuster just to hear the music. Sure enough it sounded a lot like Mirror Mirror just like Stevie said.
Funny that Risky Business came out around 83 I think - same time Stevie "borrowed" from Little Red Corvette. She sure was doing an awful lot of humming along to other stuff back then.
