Hey, guys. On the 11th my mom and I are leaving for a road trip to Phoenix and I'm really excited! This will be my third cross-country drive; I can't wait to get out West again. I was wondering if any of you guys had any suggestions for sights we should see on our way. I'm really stoked because on the way out, we're taking the southern route (through Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, etc.), and I've never gone that way before. So if you guys have any suggestions for things to do/see in or around the following cities, I'd love to hear them!

Memphis, TN
Little Rock, AR
Tulsa, OK
Amarillo, TX
Albuquerque, NM
Moab, UT
Grand Junction, CO
Kansas City, KA or MO
St. Louis, MO
Indianapolis, IN

Anybody else love taking roadtrips? Where have you traveled?

I've been trying to talk my mom into going to Graceland (and Dollywood) for months ... she's so anti-Elvis (and Dolly), I don't even understand it. We're staying there overnight, so we'll have to stop by Backstreet. Thanks for the tip, Jazzy! :xoxo:

It's all in the song...

If you ever plan to motor west,
take my way, it's the highway that's the best
get your kicks
on Route 66.

It winds from Chicago to L.A.
More than two thousand miles, all the way
Get your kicks
on Route 66.

Down to St. Louis,
Joplin, Missouri
Oklahoma City looks oh so pretty
You ought to see Amarillo,
and Gallup, New Mexico
Flagstaff, Arizona
Don't forget Winona
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino

Won't you get hip to this kindly tip
And, go take that California trip
Get your kicks
On Route 66.

:blob2:

Last year whan I was out west, I went to see the 4 corners. It was a place I'd wanted to see since I was little. I really enjoyed it.

 y'know, out of the 20+ states I've been to, Indiana is my LEAST favorite. The last time I drove cross-country, we hit a ton of construction just outside of Terra Haute and sat for hours. Yuck!

And Chili - thanks for the tip ... . I've heard that Rt. 66 is pretty run-down now. It's too bad.

They've renovated some long stretches of Route 66 in New Mexico & Arizona. Those sections are a nice alternative to the boring I-40 interstate.

That's good to know! I'm glad they've put some work into it.

4 corners is really cool. Unforunately, I think we're going to miss it this time out because we're going to the Grand Canyon and then up into Utah on the way home.

Not directly on your route, but maybe you could jet over:

Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial - If you can get there, PLEASE go and see this. We stopped there on a whim during our cross country trip in 2000. They had just finished it so there wasn't any grass & the trees were tiny, but the impact was still amazing. I will never forget it.

Bryce Canyon in Utah - kicks the Grand Canyon's ass, IMO. :D

I've lived here my whole life, and there's 2 seasons: winter and construction.

Indiana is a boring state, but have you ever drove Illinois north to south? Talk about yawn olympics..... There is absolutely nothing except corn fields.

I just went this past Christmas (they had a special 10th anniversary exhibit)...very powerful, very emotional, a must-see.

If you are going to be driving from Tulsa (My former home, Not alot to do in Tulsa IMO) to Amarillo (Nice town, But I am not familiar with Amarillo since I only stopped to shop on the way to Lubbock/Dirt Bowl) please feel free to stop in downtown OKC and visit the Murrah Building National Memorial & Museum (Which is only about a mile North of I-40 which passes directly South of downtown OKC).

http://www.oklahomacitynationalmemorial.org/

Ya could also fine a nice meal at any of the new eateries in Bricktown (Which is part of downtown OKC), Which includes the Ford Center which is located next to I-40. (Please avoid the nastyass Toby Keith's Bar & Grill restaurant)

As for me, I'm not planning on any travels except to Lubbock, TX to visit family (Also to hit the Ralph music stores) & to OKC (Which is a near daily trip) due to health issues.

That's what we say about Ohio! It's either ice or orange barrels on the roads.

I've never driven N/S through Illinois, just E/W. The entire midwest is pretty damn boring!

St. Louis, MOI love St. Louis, but the summer climate is not tolerable for me.

Lots to see in St. Louis:
the arch
the zoo
the riverfront
if you like american history like me, you'll love the Great Rivers Museum
& beautiful beautiful Forest Park, which is where they held part of the Worlds Fair in 1904 or whenever it was (see the movie)

I think I'm going to take a quick weekend trip by the end of the summer, and take my Sara and my little cousin to the zoo. I hear it's not to be missed.
