Ok I've finally gotten around to seeing all 3 Godfather's,( I know, sue me! ) and people that know alot more about films than I do say part 3 is used toilet paper compared to the first 2. I didnt think it was that bad. Interestingly enough, I remember the mob threatened to shut down production of the first Godfather if there wasnt a 100% Sicilian actor(Pacino) in the cast. I wonder how they felt about Eli Wallach, who if I'm not mistaken is Hungarian/Jewish having a prominent role in part 3? I guess they figured James Caan was in part 1 so what the hell.

Actually James Caan was very well trained before the movie, he became a close friend of a young boss who taught him a lot of secrets of mafia's way to act. They stayed close friends even after the end of the movie, and that caused Caan a couple of problems.
About Part 3, it's basically a homage to Italian melo, looks as a whole as an excercise of style IMO, and the fact that Coppola filled it with some obscure facts of Italian recent history, made it inconsisent for non Italian audiences. Besides the film started on the wrong note, since Coppola had to use his daughter instead of Winona Ryder who had a bad nervous breakdown just few days before shooting. I still like some parts though, like the end. He's Homerus, when he wants to. The problem is that in the last few years he preferred to work for the money.

The Godfather Part III is a fine movie. Its just that the first two were incredible and this is where it suffers. As for Pacino being 100% Sicilian, well he was born in the Bronx so I don't think that counts (despite his father being Sicilian and his mother Italian).
Eli Wallach in my opinion was the best actor in Part III. He gave a great performance as Don Altobello and it was a very fine and fitting ending for him in the movie. I still think of him as Tuco in "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" though.. (The Godfather II and Good, Bad & Ugly are two of my favorite films behind Casino)
Robert Duvall was supposed to reprise his role as Tom Hagan in Part III but an arguement with Coppola over money and credits made sure he was history. Most of his characters lines went to Connie, Michael's sister.
A lot of the movie is based around true events although the story is a little more colourful with artistic license, unlike Scorcese's "Casino" which is very much the same as the real events.
There were plans for a fourth movie with Andy Garcia and Di Caprio but thankfully it all fell through..

RomyMr Caan was very convincing indeed. My friend, whos a real buff of these movies, said that was the worst part of part 3, the fact that Sophia Coppola was in it.
I like the "Godfather part III," but it doesn't really compare to the other two. I think Al Pacino was beginning to play Al Pacino at this point, and not his intended character. So there's the screaming and the dry voice and some un-subtle mannerisms here and there-but unless you observe very closely those won't even bother you. I remember one of the biggest gripes was Sofia Coppola's performance. If I recall well most people thought it sucked.
But everyone has their own opinions of course. :)

The best thing that could have happened in GFIII would have been to kill off Sophia Coppola's character in the first five minutes - OY she was a stinker
