So. I was driving home from Barnes & Noble today (I bought Steel Magnolias, the new Mark Knopfler & Emmylou album, and Trio (y'know, Dolly, Emmylou, Linda), for anyone who's interested), and after I got off the freeway, I saw this thing just sitting in the middle of the road, and I had no idea what it was. I pulled off the road a little ways up and walked back, and it was an injured bird! At first I thought it had been decapitated ( ) since it had blood on the top of its head, but then I realized it was just scared ****less and hurt. I picked it up and walked back to my car and figured out that it's a young turkey vulture. It's about the size of a pigeon and UGLY! I called a wildlife rehabilitator whose number I got from my vet, but she's not answering and has no voicemail, apparently. Sooooo ... it looks as if I have a pet vulture for the night!! I'll have pics up in a min.

Thanks, guys. :xoxo: I'll keep y'all updated on the goings-on. The Turkey Vulture Society (http://vulturesociety.homestead.com/index.html) has some more numbers for wildlife rehabilitators in my area, so I'll be calling around tomorrow before I have to go to work.

A turkey vulture is a kind of vulture, but I think this one's a black vulture, judging from the shape of its beak.

Aaaaw, the poor little baby...bless you for taking care of it!
The turkey vultures here are HUGE. They've got waddles, I think that's where they get the name from.

Yeah, they're huge here, too. He's very young - you can see he still has some of his down feathers, esp. around his neck.

You rock for rescuing a bird. I am a friend of all birds and anyone who helps birds is tops on my list.

Thanks. :xoxo: I just went and checked on him, and he's been eating & drinking, so hopefully he's on his way to recovery!

That was very sweet and kind of you! I am surprised he let you pick him up. I hope he recovers. I saved a pigeon once (and I am not really a pigeon lover) but that was because he flew in my house, and my cat injured him.

If he is eating and drinking that is great. Birds also respond very well to heat, so if you have a heating pad or some kind of heat lamp kind of thing that can really help.

So, for anyone who's interested, I took the bird to the Lake Erie Nature & Science Center (http://lensc.org/lensc.php). I must sheepishly admit that, uh, there's good reason he's the size of a pigeon ... it's because he is one!!! Hey, I never said I was an ornithologist  . They said he was super dehydrated and they'd have to give him pedialyte before trying to give him any seed, but I think they're optimistic. They gave me a number to call so I can check up on him, too.

That's good that you helped out that pigeon. Pigeons are generally reviled and people are so cruel to them. Last week there was one outside my work that was having seizures. My boss suspects someone had laid out some poisoned food, since there are quite a few pigeons around that shopping center. But that pigeon was lucky because my boss took it in, emptied its stomach and gave it some medicine to counteract the affects of the poison (I work at a veterinary office that treats birds and although my boss is an asshole sometimes, he's a true animal lover). Within an hour or so it was on its feet and doing well. We gave it a bit of food and water and then released it that evening. I just hope no more of them end up like that.

It's so sad that someone would do that, and I'm glad he's doing well. Most of the people I told my story to told me I was stupid for driving it to Cleveland (I'm an hour away) and that I should've just killed it. Assholes.
