View Full Version : Stevie Rocks! Dark Intense Rocking Survivor - Rounds 2 through 4

Oh, the irony!!! The whole idea in my head to do this was because I was listening to "Whole Lotta Trouble" from Enchanted Disk Two and I was thinking, "man, she is really ripping this one during the bridge- what great vocals!"
And then the whole thing gets dumped on the very first round!
Yes, the horns suck- but, other than that, I really don't understand the hate for this song. Eh, to each their own I guess....

Studio versions released on the original album.
Live versions would be waaaaaaaay too hard to qualify- i.e., "Rhiannon" 1976 vs. Klonopin "Rhiannon" 1991...

How Weird, I consider Long Way to Go one of the top intense, serious, gritty rockers on this list. It certainly isn't mellow in music or vocal or lyrics. So, if all three of those things are rocking and gritty and intense, how could anyone vote for it so soon?

Okay, so "Blue Denim" isn't exactly dark, but it is extremly forlorn and sad- and it rocks like a mother****er (especially the end) and I think Michael Campbell's guitar and the background vocals are excellent.
However, that being said- with eleven votes, we bid a sad farewell to my beloved "Blue Denim"..... :( :wavey:

Wow, do you really think LILAR is less rocking than OTR? OTR is one of my favorite songs, but it simmers at a lower heat than LILAR. OK, that cooking analogy just made me hungry. Yeah, that's all it takes ... (i just typed "cakes" ...)

uhh, 'Unconditional Love' is much better than LILAR - especially the master version, which I happen to LOVE!
The line that kills me in LILAR is the "Straight Back to the Sea - Straight Back!" and this stupid bass line kicks in  Its the only Stevie song I think sounds embarrasing :sorry:

I too don't care for Stevie's choice in collaborative partners - but I don't think they overshadow any part of the album, which is great, because I don't like The Dixie Chicks, Macy Gray or Sheryl Crow all too much - but it all comes out perfectly :)

See, I think it's very dark. The imagery, the mood, it's all very dark and intense to me. I get the feeling in this song that she's having a tempestuous affair with some beast  ("creature of the night") and there's a storm raging outside and they're fighting ("you go your way....go on, go on, you won't forget me," etc) and it's all very emotional and volatile. I think this is one of Stevie's darkest songs.

Yeah, I agree. After I posted, I was like "wait a second..." But you have to pick one, and I did. :p

When you sit and think about, aren't all of Stevie's songs basically the same??? ;)
"Blah, blah, blah..... dreams
Yadda, yadda, yadda.... crystal angel
Yakk, yakkk, yakkkk.... stare at the top of the stairs
Running down the hallway through the garden
With the blue light shining through the night
Blah-buh-dee, blah, blah....."

Yes, we did get a little off track with weekends, holidays, etc. However, with eight votes "Love is Like a River" gets voted off- which is a shame since this was really the one track from Street Angel that had any oomph to it at all (besides "Blue Denim"). Granted the background vocals are a sin- but the yell during the bridge, the crunchy guitars and the overall pissed-off bitchiness of this song makes in great IMO.

OK- I'll be the first to vote for "Running through the Garden"
I simply do not like this song- I have tried, really I have
but the lyrics are just too...fabricated and made- up and unrealistic..(maybe I have just heard enough songs that
Stevie sings about 'gardens and flowers, etc.')
I don't care for her vocals, or the arrangements or just anything about this song-
Perhaps it is a dark song and it is a rock song...
but all in all
It is not a GOOD song...
It gets my vote to go away -though
