View Full Version : When Did Fleetwood Mac (Buckingham Years) Play Alaska?

In that Tango listening party interview, Stevie & Mick both said that the band had played in Alaska. When was this? I can only assume it was in 1975, 1976 or 1977, but when? I assume it was Anchorage? (I doubt it was some hinterland outpost like Barrow.) I have virtually all the '77 dates in my datebase, but I don't have an Alaska date that year.
Why doesn't anyone ever answer my questions?

Because you're the one who usually answers ours!
Sorry, David, I wish I knew.

Sorry, David, I wish I knew. It's weird to think about those guys playing Alaska, isn't it?
I wonder whether Stevie & Mick had Alaska confused with Miami or something.

Very weird. Or maybe it was a typo and they were supposed to play in AZ instead of AK ... talk about climate shock!

No, I think they meant Alaska. Even Chris mentioned something about the short days & little sunlight. Didn't Mick say something about them going to Alaska & Hawaii after playing in Asia? Maybe it was on the Rumours tour.

You know, I just can't imagine they'd go to Alaska in December--that's the dead of winter up there in December, very little sunlight, cold temps, etc.
This is all weird, Mary Anne. I wish we knew when they played Alaska.

I wouldn't want to go to Alaska in December either.:D But, they did say that they went in the winter. The DJ sounded surprised that they went when it was so cold & dark. Maybe Hawaii wasn't the last show in 1977? I could see if just one of them said they had gone to Alaska, but Mick, Chris & Stevie all seemed to say they had played there..very strange.

How many times have they played in Hawaii? I haven't heard of many. That sucks for Alaskans and Hawaiians. They're part of the fifty states, but they get hardly any Mac. Especially Hawaii, because by all accounts the members have spent a fairly significant amount of time there - but yet they don't play there?

Possibly. Everything was dark those days.

What is weird is that I swear that I either read or heard about someone who met Stevie in Alaska in the early to mid-70s. I don't know if it was someone online or someone that I met at a show or wherever. This is going to bug me now.

No Hawaii on the Mirage Tour or the Tango Tour. I don't think they played Hawaii on the Mask Tour.
Here's a review of their March 1980 show in Honolulu:

But see my Note at the end of the review pointing out the errors.

And presumably not the Dance or SYW.
That is strange, I'm suprised. Maybe the expense outweighs the tickets sold? I kind of doubt that, though.
That is a good review, I like his/her take. I always wonder why people mention her costume changes, though. I mean, it's a show, it seems natural to change your costume.

Maybe for a drag queen!
See AMber, MUSICIANS don't do that. Thus, the criticism.
Is she here to perform music, or put on a fashion show?

I didn't realize there had to be such a narrow definition of "performance", and "musicians". It's not like her costumes got in the way of some great singing performances, so who cares?
But I'm sure you're right, I'm sure no singer or musician has never changed during a set, and if that is so, it naturally follows that changing your clothes completely negates any of your musical contributions. She should have stayed in the same sweaty ol' stuff back stage while she waited for LB to finish his own songs.

Obviously, the REVIEWERS didn't get it. I'm ONLY trying to possibly explain their mindset. Thanks for taking it as some opinion of mine you can bash.
I'll bet you like the SYW orchestra, too.   And think LIB is awesome(if you've even seen it).

I didn't bash your opinion, as such. However, I will say that I'm not sure the drag queen joke was that funny... :p
It would have helped if you had prefaced your comment with "I don't think the reviewers get it, they are probably thinking...[etc.]"
Either way if it was your opinion or the reviewers, I would have debated. Which is different than bashing.
And don't pretend you don't agree with the reviewer...
I have no idea what you're talking about with the orchestra and all that, which isn't related to clothing one bit... But for the record, I prefer more spare arrangements of their music.
But if I did really like the orchestra, wouldn't you be bashing my opinion? Don't care, just saying. :D You've also by those comments effectively shown that you group changing clothes on a par with having too many musicians, which you don't like, and therefore it stands to reason that you also don't like the clothing changes.
Ah-HA!

Nope.
edit- (I've been up waaaaaay too long, so I (don't) apologize for any incoherency in the following!)
lately here, there certainly seems to be a movement of a bunch(okay, maybe only a few, but when they post every 10 seconds of the day, it sure FEELS like a bunch) of new Stevie Ledgies, who seem to endlessly proclaim that the worst sh*t she's ever done, smells like roses. Orchestra....The Second Time.....dressing up like a witchy gypsy, doesn't matter. IT ROCKS!
They wear on me like a bad case of the clap(not that I'd know what that feels like).
In short, the wardrobe changes have/had NOTHING to do with the quality of the music. Get it?

I don't know what she does these days, but back in those days, she changed only outer garments. She started with her skirt, leotard & boots, & just changed capes & shawls--outer things. It's not as if she went backstage to change her underwear or her socks.
By the way, I think instead of frankenbocks, Stevie should get out there onstage in white socks. I think that would be a really cool, granny sort of look. Plus, it would bring a sense of community theater to the proceedings--of local residents performing plays like "On Borrowed Time" or "Our Town" or even musicals like "Grease" or "Bye Bye Birdie."
I want to see Stevie granny it up a little. I'm thinking of Vicki Lawrence in "Mama's Family" early '80s.

Maybe the band just went to Alaska for promotion, but didn't actually perform there?

Interesting point. It's a possibility, I would say. They went to England in the fall of 1976 to promote themselves, but didn't actually play any shows.
If they were in Alaska at some point in 1977 to promote themselves but not to play, that would explain why I've never been able to dig up any Alaska tour dates.
Thank you! This never occurred to me.
