View Full Version : Whats Wrong with "Paper Doll"?

I was reading the No Questions Asked thread, and a lot of folks were bashing Paper Doll. its not the best fm/stevie song but its a good tune. it appears on the Chain box set, and the very best of Fleetwood Mac double cd.

so your thoughts people why do you like it? why dont you like it?

i like it because of the lyrics and the beat. stevie's voice is a little crackly and dry sounding, sounds like it was recorded after she had a cold.

I dunno why some people dislike it; I find it innocuous. I can imagine Stevie doing a little jig while singing it...

lol - I know what you mean about the jig.

I really don't know 'Paper Doll'. I've heard it but I don't know it. It's sort of bouncy and catchy. I was humming it for weeks.

Only the 2CD version or "american" version..(i don't know why it's refered to as that because it is available in the UK). I don't know why it's on there though. Was it a single?

Caribbean instruments: steel drums, batá drums, shekerés (gourd rattles), congas, guataca, güiro &c. I don't know whether these things were used in the recording, but the atmosphere the band created percussively was redolent of the tropical islands of the Caribbean. The kind of atmosphere you find in salsa, rumba, reggae, merengue & so forth.

Which leads to the question: What other FM songs have this sound? "Did You Ever Love Me" (with actual steel drums) off "Penguin" is one.

Here it is, for anyone who's curious:

I think it's pretty lame ... were they trying to stay under their budget of $150 or something? They couldn't even get the band together to do a couple live shots? I wonder how invested FM was in this new lineup.

the song is so cute. it's like Angel, to me, in that it seems like a fun little ditty, but if you were to sit down and read the lyrics, it's very serious...at least to me. the video sucks major ass.

and I love to shimmy my ass to it. I always think of people in cubicles at work on a hum drum day...then this song plays and they all start opening up wine coolers and putting sunscreen on their noses...

whoa, we were off the wall - my favorite line

Yeh I was thinking that. It's like the "Familly Man" video. Just a load of bits of other video's...most obviously "Seven Wonders".

Hey has anyone watched the SOTM performance from the Tusk video on YouTube? I have just watched it and it's AWESOME!

Unlike you, I'm into that sort of thing!

I think 92 was a weird year for Stevie's voice ... She's kind of transitioning from her 80's sound to her new, lower register. I like her vocal on this, tho.

The two-disc version is the American version. If it's available over here then it's the import. The UK version is just one disc and contains some Peter Green songs unlike the US version.

Really? Cool...would that be the american billboard? There is a huge difference between the american singles charts and british singles charts for some reason. For example, the Rumours lineup haven't had a number one single over here...ever. The highest charting single was "Everywhere" (peaking at #4) followed by "Little Lies" (#5), "Tusk" (#6) and "Oh Diane" and "Big Love" are joint at #9. None of the Rumours singles made top 20 and only 2 of the Tusk singles made it to the top 100 (Sara and Tusk). Wierd

I think it's pretty lame ... were they trying to stay under their budget of $150 or something? They couldn't even get the band together to do a couple live shots? I wonder how invested FM was in this new lineup. The song doesn't really feature a "new" lineup, per se.... it's Mick, John, Christine, Stevie, Billy, Rick & Lindsey.

Production was originally started in 1988, with the then-current lineup, for possible inclusion on 'Greatest Hits.'
According to Rick Vito, Mick preferred "No Questions Asked," so "Paper Doll" was shelved.

(As an aside, I've always suspected that the real reason Mick "preferred" "No Questions Asked" at that time, was the fact that Vito had a co-writing credit on "Paper Doll." Perhaps he wasn't ready for one of the "new boys"... who possibly wouldn't last, if Lindsey would've agreed to come back... to collect songwriting royalties off of a release that could potentially sell millions of copies.)

Eventually, the track was dusted off, and Lindsey was brought in to overdub some vocals (and presumably some guitar parts), for use on the 1992 boxed-set. I'm not sure if any additional instrumentation was recorded at that time as well, or if Stevie re-recorded any of her vocals.

So, being that it was was the single released in the US to support the boxed-set, a video was compiled featuring footage of the seven Maccers who played on the song.

I thought it was a clever enough way to promote the song and boxed-set, since that particular group of people weren't available to film a video.

I like "Paper Doll" especially because of Chris's organ. Stevie's vocal is a big problem, but I actually like the song itself.

The vocals sound like another bad Bob Dylan impression and the lyrics are just heinous.

you like a man with a future
you like a woman with a past
Well do you really believe that
She said to the faces in the crowd

yesterday I was fascinated by somebody else...

Ugh. I haven't heard the song in years and I still remember that ****. I think I'm scarred for life.

I love the lyrics to "I Got It In For You"

"Tangled Up in Texas" is bad, I'll give you that, but it makes me laugh so it's all good. Not quite as funny as "I Recovered I Survived," though.

Like an old crop duster pulling out of a dive
I recovered, I survived

I haven't heard that one, but I usually LOVE Billy's covers. His versions of "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay," "Bye Bye Love," "Oh Well" and "The Letter" are incredible. I didn't care for his cover of "Ring of Fire" though.

Ok, the worst mac song would probably be a pre-buckingham nicks song. I really don't like the blues stuff but without it we wouldn't have the Fleetwood Mac we know today. "Oh Diane" is the worst LB song. I love pretty much everything Stevie Nicks has done with the mac and most Christine Stuff except "Only Over You" and a song on 'Tusk' I can't quite remember wot is called but for me "Oh Diane" takes the punch as the worst mac song. Miss Vicky what do you feel is the worst?

As I've already stated in numerous other threads "The Second Time" is truly the worst Fleetwood Mac song ever recorded. Surely one of the worst songs of all time. Absolutely atrocious.

As for the pre-BN Fleetwood Mac, my only complaint about them is Jeremy Spencer's insistance on trying to be Elmore James. How many freakin' variations of "Dust My Broom" do we really need?
