View Full Version : the most beautiful song of all time

Since I started a worst song thread, how about the most beautiful?

Warm Ways, Silver Springs and Songbird from FM have to be there.

Beautiful sad would be Bonnie Raitt singing I Can't Make You Love Me.

Pachelbel's Canon In D and Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony are favorites as well. John Coltrane doing Favorite Things and Sarah Vaughn's Lullaby Of Birdland for jazz.

Is there ever enough beautiful music in the world?

I don't think I can pick a definitive most beautiful song, but here are a few candidates that spring to mind:

"Through the Walls" Bekka and Billy

"Overcome" Live

"Tears in Heaven" Eric Clapton

"Beautiful Child" Fleetwood Mac

"Please Stay" Warren Zevon

"With or Without You" U2

"Lovin' You" Walter Egan (Fundamental Roll outtake, never officially released as part of an album but available as a free download from walteregan.net)

"Never Tear Us Apart" INXS

and I'm sure there are a lot more but I can't think of them right now.

Yeah, love the sig... sigh. Shippers.

But anyway, yeah, just proves that I'm not a total Stevie-hater. Just, say, 90% or so.

I'm not much for most recent country but Two Sparrows In A Hurricane by Tanya Tucker definitely gets me. I'd have to call it beautiful. John Denver doing Goodbye Again is the same kind of beautiful sad. I can get goosebumps from Ian & Sylvia but no single song pokes out as beautiful.

Total Eclipse of the Heart and The Rose for the most beautiful!!!!

The Ninth of LVB is also right there.I'm new here but thought I'd say that it's great to see Beethoven being mentioned although I personally wouldn't have picked it as his most "beautiful". It's such a subjective term, I'd go so far as to say the most powerful music ever written.

As for "beautiful", I'm going with Neil Finn (with the NZ Symphony Orchestra) performing Message To My Girl. I would also consider The Beatles' early number In My Life to be "beautiful". I saw Never Tear Us Apart mentioned, that one is hard to deny.

I'm new here but thought I'd say that it's great to see Beethoven being mentioned although I personally wouldn't have picked it as his most "beautiful".

The Ninth is beautiful to me because I sang it and I swear when I hear it, it is as if LVB knew the sound of the voice of God. But, I agree the power is there as well. I also love his Fifth.

Interestingly, I think Mozart's Clarinet Concerto is way up there in beauty as well.

And "Don't Give Up" with Kate Bush is another one that gets me teary - especially when combined with the video for it!

SHIITTTEEEE - I SOBBED the first time I heard this song. What a combination of talent that was.

To quote La Nicks - almost too much talent on stage!
Yes, and the idea of you sobbing is almost tooo much to bear...makes me giddy.
Wonder why that is? Maybe it's a whipschains thing?

This song is a beauty...

Of course you have! Everyone knows that one-

"I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear skin smiles
Who married young and then retired...."

AND - I LOVE My Heart Will Go On" and anyone who has something bad to say about that can KISS IT :wavey:
That song it absolutely horrible. I'm sure Satan uses it in hell as a torture device. Anything by Celine Dion is awful, but that one is close to the top of stankyness....

My problem with it is that during Titanic dominance of the world, I heard it everywhere 10 times a day. After the first 50 listenings in two days every sugar-coated tearjacking, not so bad song becomes the SS hymn to my ears.

I have to add "These Flowers" by Martha Wainwright and "I Wish I Was The Moon Tonight" by Neko Case. Martha totally tears me apart on These Flowers, and Neko Case's voice is just stunning.

It's actually Janis Ian. I always loved the fact they named the cool freaky outsider character who Lindsay Lohan befriends in Mean Girls after Janis Ian.

I think At Seventeen was one of the very first songs I learnt on guitar.

In addition to Love Will Tear Us Apart, I'd like to say the Spongebob Squarepants movie soundtrack is also very beautiful.I wonder what shes up to these days?

Actually when I think of most beautiful songs, one that most certainly comes to my mind is Dakota by the Stereophonics. This song has it all. Power, emotion, grace.

Should beautiful mean sad? I guess that's how I equate it in my mind.

Well, as Elton John once said, "sad songs say so much."  :p

I love sad songs too. The sadder, the better. There's something about the poignancy of sad songs that make them so beautiful I think.

I can quite easilly not love the 'Titanic Song'. For one thing, it is the cheesiest thing ever written. It was only a hit because of the film. Celine Dion needs to be shot. Really! She has an incredible voice but insists on singing total tripe. It's like Cher...her later stuff is AWFUL and she has such a powerful voice. However, as of yet, no one has beaten the voice of fabulous ms. nicks.
