View Full Version : An inconvenient truth.

Sorry to mislead - but this has nothing to do with Al Gore's movie (which is really good by the way).

But it's about the truth, the ugly and inconvenient truth that I love bad food.

I love food period.

So much so that I am now increasing in mass, which is a bad thing.

I still have wrists and ankles - so that's good - but I'm actually the biggest I've ever been in my whole life and I think it finally time for a change (although I should have started taking things in command about 10 pounds ago.)

But seriously - it takes so little time to put the weight on, and I get discouraged thinking about how long it's now going to take me to undo what I've done to my body. It sucks.

I REFUSE to do any sort of fad diet or pills. I'm a firm believer in proper nutrition and exercise...it works - I just haven't been doing either with any sort of consistency.

Anyone else battling these issues??

Yes, always. Now, you see, you DO have an advantage over me, since you're moving away from the land of unhealthy food, and I will be staying. So I really think that might help you. Plus, isn't it all nice & cool & green & healthy where you're going? Perhaps you'll exercise more in the beautiful environment?

BTW - don't forget our lunch date for Mexican Saturday. :p That can be your last hurrah.

ME ME ME. I just weighed myself last week for the first time in months and I was horrified. I am also the heaviest I have ever been, and I hate it. I don't like fad diets either, so I bought a book about general nutrition. For the last two weeks, I haven't had any soda or artificially sweetened juice (which is hard because I work at a restaurant and soda flows like ... well, like the drool down my face as I type about food), and I've seriously cut back on white bread, pasta, etc. I've been eating a lot more fish and protein in general. I actually started a thread about this when I began ... I'll have to dig it up. It's funny because it's only been two weeks, but I've already become a lot more sensitive (taste-wise) to sugar. I had some Jif peanut butter last night and although I have never thought of it as sweet, it was almost too sugary for me to enjoy. I've also been exercising more - I got out my bike the other day and have been either cycling or walking to work every day.

You can do it, Deanna! I already feel so much better about things now that I'm making healthier choices & am not being lazy about my well-being.

What pisses me off is when I read those "easy little ways to cut calories" articles. It's always "don't drink soda, don't drink juice, use vinegar & oil instead of creamy dressings, lighten up on the bread..."

Guess what - I already do those things. So now what?!?! :(

Exactly!! I don't drink beverages with Calories in them etc..

However, no I do know that I'm still eating too much, too often and not enough of the good stuff.

I know that once I get on track it'll be easier - I just can get over that first hump!! Ugh.

Yeah - Mexican this weekend

Actually - I'm not even going to attempt a lifestyle change until I settle in Colorado. It is more green and "Earthy" and Hippiesh out there - I think the surroundings will help - as will the fact that I'll only be across the street from my gym :p

I know there are more important things in life - but the last few days I've just been depressed about my new and larger size - most notably I was thinking about how I used to look cute and feel comfortable in clothes - and I'm not so much feeling that lately :distress:

I sympathize with you. It's really tough & it seems to last forever & it's one step up, two steps back kind of thing.

I think the very first thing to do for anyone who embarks on a new life of better health & lower weight is to THROW AWAY THE SCALE IN YOUR BATHROOM.

Throw it away. You don't need it. You should not want to look at it. It is deceptive. It is treacherous. It will lie to you: when you have been doing a great job cutting back calories & sweatin' to the oldies, it will tell you that you weigh more. When you pig out & skip the gym for a week, it will tell you that you lost 5 pounds. It LIES to you. It makes you think you're in bad shape even when you're in much better shape. Looking at that ugly little digital number will send you into an emotional tailspin, which will affect your desire to go back to the gym or back onto your bike or whatever you do to sweat.

GET RID of it. Throw it out. Put it in the dumpster--throw it in there hard so that you hear a crashing sound as metal meets metal at full impact.

Well I've actually never owned a scale. I hate them! But I do use the ones at the gym (to torture myself). I stopped.

My main gauge of weight loss is always inches...when my clothes start fitting better etc I know I'm doing well - and endurance all that stuff..that's what I use to measure my progress

Now excuse me while I go back to eating my Junior Mints :p

Me too. You can't tell much by weight, remember muscle weighs more than fat so, if you're working out heavily you're probably putting on muscle which is good because it looks better than fat and it also burns fat and calories. So, yeah, I gauge weight loss/fitness etc. on how many inches I've lost, endurance, and my overall sense of strength. I've been working out lots lately and also playing tennis so I feel healthier and stronger than I have in a long time. Diet and exercise, yep, that's the ticket. Diet is the toughy for me. I love physical exertion so exercise is actually fun and satisfying to me.

That's what my brain says, but my jiggly ass says something different.

BTW - I weigh myself every 2 weeks at work, which is how I know I lost 5 pounds, for those of you wondering how the hell I know that if I don't own a scale. :p

Good God - that's how I knew there was a huge problem - the first time I felt myself jiggle when I walked. I wanted to cry :distress: I have never in my life felt my stomach move while I walked until recently - and it's really bumming me out.

I. Know.

I have a current obsession with backfat - do I have it, is it only because a certain bra doesn't fit properly, is this shirt too tight.... I can somewhat deal with a big ass & a gut, I've always been a pear shape & I've always had a belly as far back as I can remember. But backfat? Ugh.

the heaviest weight in my life, 247lbs (But I am 6'-2").

Had a doctor's appt. today about other health issues and my Dr. recommends that I need to lose a few pounds, So I am going to cut back on the lil' sweet stuff that I eat now (Not a candy/sweet freak...Nor do I like chocolate) and drink more water.

As soon as the weather becomes reasonable (Whenever it is finally no longer 100+ degrees) & I get my ongoing headaches minimized I will start my long walking exercise up once again (Used to average nearly 5 miles a day).

Yes backfat, the most hated of all fats. I'm telling you, aerobic exercise is where it's at. That back fat will melt away. I've been doing a lot of step aerobics with weights lately and I've noticed a HUGE difference fast. I bet I've lost 10-15 lbs, I don't know for sure because I don't own a scale either, but I'm wearing jeans today that I haven't been able to fit into for a year and they're loose! I have to say, I'm overjoyed.

Every day. So I try to be as active as possible. I bike daily around the lake by my house. It does so much for me, exercising and being by the water. I also just bought some free weights and am using them regularly. Like Stevie says, I'm doing the best I can.

I'm not doing the best I can - I guess that's my problem. But I feel good that at least I know there is a problem - I even know how to go about battling it - it's just the implementation that's getting me

Backfat. HATE the backfat. That was another blow to the ego - the first time I saw/and then the first time I felt backfat

I'm really wanting to get back on track in Colorado - it helps that there are tons of amazing bike trails! Rochester has got the be the most bike undfriendly place I've EVER seen - I haven't ridden once since I moved here :(

It sounds like you are really unhappy there :( . I'm glad you'll be moving to a place that makes you happy. When you're happy and have a positive attitude, getting into an exercise regimen is easier and then the regimen perpetuates more of a positive attitude. It's a win/win situation (oh no, I used a hated overused phrase!).

Yeah - sadly I've been very unhappin in Rochester. It's just so foreign from all I ever knew.

I feel like the end quote from Wizard of Oz - something about if you don't find what you're looking for maybe it wasn't lost at all - but in your own backyard or something...lol - I'm too lazy to look up the actual quote...

Well - we'll be neighbors - I'll be in Greeley (no comments on the smell ;) )

And - water - I try to drink lots of that during the day - I always keep a bottle on my desk - that's one thing I know I'm doing right - that and not drinking soda or juice (I'm sort of lying - I usually have a diet soda with lunch - but that's still calorie-free).

What's funny is I've heard that from a lot of people - then when I got there to check out the station - I stepped out of the car and just started laughing - it did, indeed, smell like cows.

Anyway - yes, I will still be working for an NPR station, KUNC in Greeley - which does reach parts of Denver I believe. the best water we drink is the tap water. If you fill a bottle with the tap water (Add ice) and let it sit in the frig for an hour it is the best tasting water you'll have ever drunk.

As for all the mention of Colorado, I hope to visit Denver yet again to do some snooping around...Lot of family secrets exist in Denver.

Want to lose some pounds quickly... start jogging/running if you can - it melts away fast! Get some friends together, sign up for a relay race in your area or some sort of 5 - 10k run or something and start working towards that... you'll get some good results pretty quick.

*shudder* Running to me is the worst punishment possible. I HATE running. I've tried it - I've tried treadmill, outside - with friends - I despise running.

I think that's because it was always used a punishment in school - do something bad? RUN!!!! And I had many times where I was in pain and about to pass out - but I had an overweight P.E. teacher yelling at me to RUN!!!!

HATE it.

So I'll be losing the weight with no running :D

I did it three years ago - I biked a ton, eliptical, weights and swimming - but I hate indoor swimming - so I've not gone once while in Rochester...I'm SO looking forward to my move west - I think that will really help me get back on track.

I've been dieting for 2 weeks and exercising this week...so far, I've lost I think 2 lbs. wtf? anyway, I'm staying away from sugar and watching calories as much as possible. no fast food, etc. my goal is to be in better shape by my birthday in late August.
