Night falls and it's time for something completely different — an American-as-apple-pie set from Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers. He's on the What Stage, which is roughly the size of Park Place in Barrie, Ontario. People have been assembled here for hours to wait for the man, so we get comfortably ensconced near the back of the field. Petty is dressed for the occasion in a red shirt and black blazer, but man, can someone feed the man a gyro? His face is a dead ringer for Skeletor's. The band don't pull any punches, though. The first hour of the set is a greatest hits primer, with "You Don't Know How It Feels," "Free Fallin'," "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and his cover of "I'm A Man." Everyone around us is drunk and singing every word. Then he does an introduction that we can't hear, and launches into "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around." A woman's voice chimes in, and I think to myself, "Wow, that woman really sounds a lot like Stevie Nicks," which is because she actually is Stevie Nicks. She sounds awesome, and later, as we hide in the air-conditioned splendor of the Yet Another (Comedy) Tent, The Daily Show's "youth correspondent," Demetri Martin, aptly points out that "she doesn't even look that fat."

I guess we've reached the point where back-handed compliments are about the best Stevie can hope for in the general press.

Are people ever gonna stop talking about her weight?! It drives me nuts so let alone how she feels. Isn't it all about the music?!

I think they're just worried they won't be able to masturbate to the cover of her upcoming album.

very good
it is a shame that weight is what they talk about. Though i shall say that al least it is GREAT that they spoke of her voice BEFORE her weight!! Not many celebs even get that... :distress:
She's 58, she's allowed to eat now! geeze....

It's so disrespectful towards her. And like Janis_no1 said:"She's allowed to eat now".

For crying out loud, she's a celebrity. She's talked about her weight problems in interviews. He appearance is and always has been a part her gig. She's overweight, so what ? It's a fact.
Now, if they said she's a bad singer, or wore ugly clothes, or had bad hair, that's a matter of opinion.

Heh, heh, I love Demetri Martin, not because of this comment, but in general---I think he's really funny. Oh, and that comment is pretty much in line with his flavor of dry, absurdist humor so try not to be too offended.

as bad as I hate to admit it, you're right. it pains me cause, you know, it's Stevie and I don't want anyone to say anything bad about her.
but the fact is she is a celebrity. I don't cut slack for any celebrity when it comes to things like this, not even my beloved Stevie. if you don't like it, don't be a celebrity. and Stevie realizes this. she was at a weight, at one time, where she didn't like the talk so she didn't perform.
on a side note, I think she looks fabulous! yeah, she's been fat...hell, few people haven't. but she's looking so good...and at 58, come on. she's hot as hell. and you can tell she's feeling it. she keeps the girls right at eye level.

That's my notion of just plain old nasty.

No, I'm saying it's his . You'd have to see his stand-up to get it. I know you won't, but I'm just saying.
It's not nasty...nasty is if he had said, "yeah, and that Stevie Nicks? What a fat cow she's become, someone put a moo-moo on her post haste."
What he said? Nasty? hardly.

Most of the crowd at Bonnaroo is on some kind of multi-day mind expanding trip. Given that, the comments make perfect sense.

Moreover, she put her weight out there in the press. She has openly discussed it since the 70's and has often said what a challenge it is. So, I think it is cool to discuss it as well.
