A lot of people here are talking about Texas band Midlake with reviews of their second album comparing them to Grandaddy, Mercury Rev and Fleetwood Mac. My friend gave me the CD last week and the Mac influence is obvious.

I've uploaded a track from their new album The Trials Of Van Occupanther. Let me know what you all think:

And a review:

Midlake: The Trials Of Van Occupanther
Bella Union
Review: Ben East
****

A soft rock concept album: it's enough to make you run for the hills. But that's exactly what Texans Midlake deliver on their gorgeous, escapist second album, The Trials Of Van Occupanther - an organic, pastoral thrill that updates 1970s Fleetwood Mac and Crosby, Stills & Nash for a new generation.

Arcade Fire acolytes will find much to enjoy in the woozy charm of tracks such as Young Bride, one of this series of songs about a character called Van Occupanther, struggling with his loner status. Classic, elegant songwriting.

Midlake - The Trials Of Van Occupanther (Bella Union)
(four stars) UK release date: 12 June 2006

For a few years now the notion of "influenced by the '70s" has come to mean spiky, angular guitar bands reminiscent of punk circa 1979. Tim Smith and his Texas band Midlake have ploughed an altogether different '70s furrow for The Trials of Van Occupanther, their second record.
There must be something in the water over at Bella Union HQ just now. A couple of weeks ago they released the stunning debut album by Howling Bells. Now comes this very different but compellingly lovely album that convincingly suggests, in hippy-folky ways, that the clash of modernity and a better time is of essential importance.

Opening track Roscoe harks after halcyon days in the 1800s, while Bandits suggests that being robbed of one's material possessions could be a blessing in disguise, the protagonist couple heading out to hunt and fall in love on their search for food. Maybe. It's pastoral and soothing at any rate.

This lyrical theme, a hankering after a period in our collective history when man was more at one with nature, has been tapped into by everything from the film Running Silent to wannabe hippy chicks (Joan Baez and lately Sandi Thom, yet mentioning Midlake in the same sentence as Tooting's belle du jour is hardly worthy). Quite who or what Van Occupanther is in this scheme of things is not entirely clear, but it serenades the listener happily back in time anyway.

Rooted in a sound reminscent of Fleetwood Mac, with vintage-sounding keyboards and folksy acoustica twittering around the central vocal harmonies, there are also obvious nods to Radiohead, especially in Smith's vocals. Head Home marries the two most effectively, sounding like Thom Yorke fronting Fleetwood Mac. Branches and In This Camp could pass off as Radiohead tracks, while on the title track a flute takes the harmony of the song to a more obviously '70s place. Smith admits to influences such as Joni Mitchell and Neil Young, but while their music runs right through this record, it is also something all of its own.

We Gathered In Spring is one of the many highlights, a psychedelic dirge with Clannad-like synth hooks and unhurried guitar. There's more on the hunter theme with Chasing After Deer, the album's most stark moment and a contrast to the full-on sound of the rest of the record.

The track Young Bride most obviously calls to mind Devendra Banhart with its shambling ryhthm and inventive arrangement, but it's more of a complete article than the bearded pixie has yet managed. Compared variously to The Flaming Lips and Grandaddy, Midlake's take on '70s soft rock is actually better than both.

The Trials Of Van Occupanther reveals more of itself with each listen, quietly rooting itself into the subconscious. And that's just fine - this is a record to be savoured.

Oh I like it!

Kinda sounds like that Blue Oyster Cult or some early '70s psychedelic rockers. It's definitely retro.

If what that review says is true, sounds great. (duh). Unfortunately I'm at work and can't listen till I get home.

Edit - If what David says is true, I'll surely like it.

Well, there's just one lead singer. I'm assuming the rest of the band sing backing vocals. I don't know much about them really, in fact I'd never heard of them until I was given the CD last week and having listened to it a lot this week, I think a lot of people here would definitely like it, you know, if they like that laid back 70s-rock-with-sweet-harmonies kinda sound, that is.

Wow Trackie! I really like that! The music part could be more varied (a cross bassline or some contrary drums, or something - neither of which is the technical term), but I do like it. How weird, I never like anything, and suddenly this week I've heard all this good music.
They do sound Mac-ish.

I saw KT Tunstall (Cancer) on T.V., too.
I had heard a couple of her songs all over the radio all the time, and liked them fairly well, but had never seen her perform. She must be old hat to you (Trackie), she being Scottish and having so many England gigs and all -

The thing that was really rad was that...She...recorded parts right as she was onstage. She did a rhythm thing (she tapped her foot on the ground to make rhythm!), then a vocal harmony thing...I thought she was just starting her song - but then those elements were subsequently in the song as she continued the performance alone onstage.

I tguess the recorder was at her foot. I didn't know what she was doing at first, but then I started noticing that what she was just singing as she messed with something by her foot was now a backing track - she was the only one onstage. (Brill, right? )

She made all the noises herself. I really like that. Because, you know, it's just how you do at home, only with less talent.

She didn't just have a harmony, there was a harmony/percussion that she did with her foot. And by that I mean that the harmony vocal she was singing also turned out to be part of the percussion/rhythm as the song progressed!

I was more impressed with her weird skills than her song, but I liked the song anyways, and I'm disproportionately impressed with the weird skills because that is actually evocative of what I do all the time at home (less well, der) - and I can't believe that this particular brand of my dorky self expression could actually work in some context. Ie, I was paying more attention to that.

And subsequently, I can't believe she was also a Cancer. :blob2: :p It makes super sense, but I've not really seen it manifested so well, except for Debbie Harry (musically). And maybe Beck. It's the skill of blending all things you ever thought of or heard, to pleasing effect, with all the musical knowledge/style/instruments/sounds you have ever gleaned.

It's the first validation I've ever seen of the totally pointless "practicing" or "my favorite useless thing to do" that I love to do. And you all know how awesome that is.

Suddenly, my favorite useless thing was put to use.

And if that means you have to play/sing all the instruments/parts yourself, so be it! :D

I feel like singing backup for her, I'll sing the guitar part, and later I will sing the drum part - I can tap my feet, and maybe even play cowbell!
We will record that rhythm, then I'm freed up to sing harmonies during the actual performance! We'll practice and just make all kinds of weird noises for songs! It will be very pretty and strange.

In short, she was her own percussionist and harmonist. Playing guitar. And she did that live. Without others.

Predictably she grew up without a T.V., too, and her fake dad was a physicist.

Yep, I've seen KT Tunstall live and the way she used her delay pedal thingie to record all the parts of the song awed me too. She's pretty darn cool, even if her songs aren't always. A good friend of mine's girlfriend actually went to university with her and used to go see her band all the time. She was pretty cool back then too from the sounds of it.

Anyway thanks for listening to it. I'm glad you liked it too!

The new Pearl Jam is great! Hey, did I tell you I got to meet Eddie Vedder recently? It was brief but he was so lovely.

Gerald you like dEUS don't you? I'm currently obsessed with the track Instant Street (pulled out my copy of The Ideal Crash last week). Have you ever seen the video? It's so cool, especially the end. Here check it out:

I haven't got their new album, is it worth getting? I kinda forgot about them to tell the truth because they sort of disappeared for a while and didn't release anything - five years maybe? Saw them numerous times live back in the day though and they were always fantastic.

Just because I know everyone here buys albums on recommendations from TV stars, especially those from the show My Name Is Earl, turns out Jason Lee is a huge fan. Here's what the man himself had to say (and he's cool: he was in a Sonic Youth video and is a former champion skateboarder): "The Trials of Van Occupanther is now one of the most important modern records I own. In an age of overly-used irony and disconnected nonchalance, this record actually means something, and Midlake should be forever hailed for their unique and genuine approach to music. Simply put, Van Occupanther has backbone, and the fact that you don't feel cheated by it gives one hope that sincerity can still exist within modern alternative music."

They're playing next week. I wonder if I should go...

David, I'm still waiting to hear your detailed analysis of this song and how it sounds like the Mac in some ways.

Midlake Summer tour!

Midlake disappointed the likes of nikki hilton and bijou phillips, two of the many who could not get in to Midlake's sold out Mercury Lounge show on Tuesday night in NYC. Droves of people came out and packed like sardines for the much anticipated show where Midlake played an hour-long performance filled with songs from their european released/US forthcoming album, 'The Trials of Van Occupanther' as well as a few tracks from their 2004 critically acclaimed album, 'Bamnan and Slivercork'. All in all, the show was a great success and a testament to the already growing excitement for 'Van Occupanther' in the US. Midlake are set to return to NYC in late July when they start their 3 week tour in the states.

They were playing with Flaming Lips for their first European tour weren't they? That sounds like it would have been an awesome show. I spotted Wayne Coyne the other day at the tube station - the Lips were playing here -and my eyes popped out of my head. He just laughed. He's very tall, eccentric and cool looking.
I got tickets for Midlake's London show on Thurday by the way.

yes, with the Lips! But on a workday in Amsterdam, I did that once and had to leave early half through the concert to catch the train back to Groningen.

Weird to think he was tubing it. I guess the Lips aren't that famous really and he was able to go around London that way.
You should definitely check out a Flaming Lips show though, they are incredible live - very theatrical and lots of fun. The first time I saw them was back in the mid-90s with a stage decorated with lots of twinkling fairy lights. That was back when they still looked like grungy indie kids, and Wayne had his long curly brown hair. He looked all suave and mature (but still eccentric) in his white suit when I saw him the other day. It's always weird to see rock stars out of context, on a tube instead of on the stage!

Cool you're going to see Midlake too! We can compare notes :)

Ah, cool! See that answers the question I posed in the title of this thread. Midlake - influenced by Fleetwood Mac? YES!! :D
I missed that. I must go listen.

Anyway, I went to see Midlake on Thursday night and it was incredible. They were very friendly and talkative to the crowd, and seemed bowled over by the positive reaction they got. But they certainly deserved it, as live they really are in their element. The small stage was filled with equipment and they moved around playing different instruments, but it didn't interrupt the flow of things at all. Live the vocals are even more gorgeous and the songs rock! I was dancing throughout Young Bride and Roscoe. Although they pretty much just stand there and play the songs, visually they keep things interesting by projecting cool videos on a screen behind them. My favourite was a eerie, funny and surreal film of fox people who came and stole a young woman from her bed, had blood transfusions from her and then turned into the band! And everyone in the band, apart from the drummer, had a beard, but I think you can hear the beards on the album.

And David (where have you gone David?), you'd have loved it for all the vintage keyboards on the stage. The only one I recognised though was a Korg keyboard which I know because my brother uses one in his band. And they played clips from the Wagner film starring Richard Burton during Roscoe (and Polanski's Tess during Head Home).

Mari you will have an amazing time and Gerald, you need to go see this band! I like the album even more now.

I agree, you can really hear the Fleetwood Mac influence on Midlake. Trials of Van Occupanther sounds so much like the Rumours-Tusk era FM.

Another band you might want to check out is The Elected (album: Sun, Sun, Sun). Songs like "Would You Come With Me", "Not Coming Home", "I'll Be Your Man", and "It Was Love" remind me a lot of Fleetwood Mac and Lindsey in particular. Also check out the song "Waves (The Time That You're Awake)" from their Me First album.

I'm just bumping this because I saw Midlake again tonight and they were awesome as ever. I'm seeing them again next week with the Lips.
They have a new video for the song Roscoe and any self-respecting fan of the Mac should definitely check it out. The Trials Of Van Occupanther is probably my album of the year.

Just thought I'd add my thoughts onto this thread: these guys are awesome!!! I haven't really fully listened to the album yet but the first three tracks kick serious ass.

I like this quote (from Wikipedia)
"This recording continues a journey of sonic self-discovery with sounds that harken back to the sounds of 1970's vintage folk-pop and rock, most notably Fleetwood Mac under Lindsey Buckinham's artistic direction."

Wow. They were excellent. I can understand you wanted to see them for a second time, Sharon, because I surely will. Brought along a friend who's only been listening to them for one week and she's already a fan... Some songs, especially Young Bride, gave us goosebumps. Just beautiful!

and very cool, I bought a 7"single afterwards and had it signed by all bandmembers:cool:

Went to see Midlake again last night and right before they came on stage they played That's All For Everyone over the speakers. It was awesome. Almost as good as the gig itself.

I love that song. And I love Midlake - how were they?

Wow! I think I'd choke up. That's such an appropriate choice in advance of their music. And it shows that they like FM for all the good reasons.....

Cool! Thanks for that Mari. And I'm totally jealous you got their autographs!
