Anyone been watching?

England are stumbling along but played two won two so not bad but could do (a lot) better.

Argentina look good.

Brazil were not too impressive and Ronaldo didn't seem interested.

I bet John's watching

How's Germany doing?

How's Germany doing?

Germany are through to the 2nd round after beating Costa Rica 4-2 and scraping a win over Poland 1-0. Both those two teams now have no chance of progressing. If Germany can't beat Ecuador in their next game, the Germans will probably play England in the 2nd round... cue cheap jibes about the war and disgusting jingoism in the British press

England will be lucky to get past the 2nd round if they carry on playing like they have up to now. I alays support Spain, and they won their first game 4-0, so I'm really happy about that :woohoo:

Cool. I'm pulling for 'em for a friend of mine who is German (surprise, surprise) and is back home right now to see Germany win the whole thing [according to him :p] .

Another team I'm interested in is Sweden...how are they doing? I hear they're really strong this year, and thanks for the info by the way....

Sweden are playing right now! They're 0-0 with Paraguay so far but there's an hour to play yet. They drew their first game 0-0 with Trinidad & Tobago, so the Swedes received a lot of criticism for that - T&T are one of the least-fancied teams in the tournament. It's going to be tight for Sweden but if they can win this game tonight they have a great chance of progressing :)

I'd love to see a Germany/Sweden face off, but it sounds like the Germans would trounce the Swedes. I have another special place in my heart for the Swedes for various reasons :xoxo:

Woo-hoo!! You're making all this sound very interesting. I'm going to have to catch some coverage tonight. And good luck to England too!! I don't know much about soccer, does England usually have one of the best teams? And be honest! No bias!

 No bias, honest. England usually have a good team, and are always well-respected by the other big names. This time round, people here have been saying it's the best English team for decades and that they have a real chance of winning - but so far they've looked really unconvincing in beating two unfancied teams. They'll have to turn it up to win the tournament! One of the biggest stories was that our star player, Wayne Rooney, broke his foot 6 weeks ago - now it's miraculously healed and he's playing again... hmmm...

I might add that the USA got a serious beating in the opening game against the Czechs (3-0) and they look like they're going to be on a plane home anytime soon :wavey: Shame 'cos they did really well last time.

The usual favourites Brazil, Argentina, Italy, France etc also look good, and World Cup Fever has seriously taken hold out here in the rest of the world!!

I've also got to say that there's a bit of a tendency here to make fun of how little Americans know about soccer - even Budweiser have a series of ads with American sports anchormen making idiots of themselves when they talk about the World Cup.

I also saw a clip of American people being interviewed in the street about what they thought of Maradona (Argentine soccer legend - one of the most famous players in history) and of course they all said stuff like "Oh yeah, I've got all her albums" and "I think she's a slut" etc - hilarious

Oh yeah, I know! But you know as far as cities in Texas go, we have some pretty big soccer fans here in Austin. I think it's due to the large population of international students we have here (BIG college town). Yeah, it's a shame about the Americans but hey, we can't be the best in everything now can we? :p All kidding aside, I wouldn't expect the Americans to have that great of a team anyway. I mean, soccer isn't really all that encouraged or supported over here like basketball, football, or baseball is .

edit: and btw, I'm a tennis player so I totally know the "no-love" for other sports (but the 3 mentioned above) crap.

Yeah, you guys definitely have your own sports - I mean, baseball and American football are just so minor over here, and basketball isn't much more popular - yet soccer is the total opposite. Apparently in areas where there's a very high Hispanic population, soccer is more popular, but apart from that it's only played by kids, is that right?

NASCAR is another one - huge in the States, especially in the south, but over here we just laugh at it :o

We don't look awfully convincing do we? Still early days yet.

Wasn't there a website created "healrooney.com"

We do seem to get a bit carried away in England at major football tournements. And then it all ends in tears!

Anyway I got my flag on the car now so all will be well!

Wanker is a great word - very well-used among angry motorists when being cut up or attacked by psychotic cyclists or something. Like 'idiot' but much stronger, and definitely not for polite company!!

Translating it is a toughie if I want to stay polite... wanking is a euphemism for keeping oneself sexually satisfied in the absence of a suitable partner  So wanker is not a nice thing to be called.

The US aren't out just yet, but it doesn't look good for them with Italy coming up soon.

Today Argentina whipped Serbia 6-0 - they were seriously impressive, and will take some beating. The Netherlands squeezed past the mighty Ivory Coast 2-1, which means the Africans can't progress any further, and the Dutch are through to the next round.

Mexico tied with Angola, so Mexico will need to do well against Portugal in order to progress.

littlewolf
06-17-2006, 03:43 AM
a draw with portugal will do for mexico
iran would need atleast 3 goal win over angola to drop mexico if portugal wins iran today and angola´s defense seems okay.
iran might even win portugal and then everybody still has a chance
i haven´t seen either of argentina´s games,they seem excellent
tomorrow japan-croatia,both have good offense, crap defense
by the way when world cup was played in us in 94 the stadiums were full,so there are people who watch it,who knows, maybe they are the silent majority?

"wanker" is an affectionate term of abuse. I feel it goes better as "f**king wanker" when directed at motorists.

"tosser" is another alternative to wanker with the same meaning.

I always find arsehole rather more colourful than asshole too. Guess thats an English thing.

"gobble" ah yes. Meaning to eat quickly with rapid intakes.. Turkeys and chickens "gobble".

As for sports I think American sports are generally adapted from more established sports but changed because the average American attention span is shorter than the rest of the world.

It's why fast food was invented, no time to waste and "I want it now" mentality.

Baseball is basically cricket morphed into something that doesn't last five days and doesn't send you to sleep, the players still wear pyjamas though. Basketball is just a manly version of Netball IMO. Maybe the guys should wear short frilly skirts like the girls...

American Football is a sort of merger of Rugby and Football but more violent and glamourous than either although why its called football is beyond me.

Football got turned into "Soccer". I think until recently its really been a school sport mostly although its now taken more seriously considering every other nation in the world views it as the biggest sport on the planet.

Golf seems to work. That's a worldwide sport that has been embraced. My theory here is Americans have always been good at this so they decided to keep it as a national sport and so we have the PGA.

And tennis too. That worked for similar reasons.

Indycar is all glamour and no content. Boring until you get a crash.

The skill level is not exactly great. Mansell, Fitipaldi, Zanardi, Franchitti, Wheldon etc have all proven you can go over and win easily. Only Mario Andretti and Jacques Villeneuve went the other way and succeeded (Jacques raced in Europe and Japan for years anyway). As for Nascar...

Put your foot down and then turn left at the end of the straight. Then do the same again, four times a lap for 200 laps. yawn...

Portugal have got past Iran 2-0, so Portugal progress and Iran can't go any further. A tie for Mexico against Portugal will see them through, even if Angola beat Iran.

The Czech Republic amazingly lost 2-0 to Ghana, so the Czechs will now probably have to beat Italy to get through. Assuming that Italy beat the US and Ghana do the same, the Czechs will have to actually beat Italy or they're going home. Big surprise, that. Of course, the USA could still create an upset by not losing their last two games :)

Anyone who is really good calls football - football. You'll never be any good while you call it soccer.

Italy 1 - 1 United States

A great effort by the States in a really chaotic game. Italy scored first, then put through their own net to make it 1-1. Then Italy lost a man when De Rossi was sent off for elbowing McBride in the face. Shortly afterwards the US lost a man as well when Mastroeni was sent off for fouling. Just after half-time, the US went down to 9 men when Pope was sent off, again for fouling. Three men sent off in a World Cup match is very rare indeed. Italy threw everything at the US but couldn't score - real do-or-die stuff! :blob2:

So the States still have a chance to make the next round if they beat Ghana.

If I read it right today, they have to win and have Italy and someone else lose.

After 2 games each, Group E stands like this: (You need to finish in the top 2 to progress)

Wins-Ties-Losses/Goals For-Goals Against/Points
Italy --------- 1-1-0/3-1/4
Czech --------1-0-1/3-2/3
Ghana --------1-0-1/2-2/3
USA ----------0-1-1/1-4/1

So it doesn't look good for the States. They need to beat Ghana in their last game and hope that Italy beat the Czechs. Italy will be trying hard because if they lose to the Czechs and Ghana beat the States, Italy will be out.

Today:
Switzerland 2-0 Togo
Saudi Arabia 0-4 Ukraine
Spain 3-1 Tunisia

Spain are through to the next phase, and it's all over for Togo. The rest must wait till their last games to find out what happens.

I expect the Germans played extra hard to avoid us!

Let me just tell you that our whole country has been waiting for that event for years and years. Now it's there and millions of people are on the streets. There are not only the people visiting the games. Tickets were hard to get. But in every larger city several "Public viewing" events take place. In Berlin there were 700.000 people today on the so called fan mile. Hundred thousands of guests from other countries are here. Today I saw lots of Swedish and English fans in my train to work heading towards Cologne where in half an hour the next game starts. It is a peaceful atmosphere. Everyone supports his team with passion but there is also a lot of respect for the other nations and teams. In Dortmund the people from Sweden and Trinidad Tobago made a great party before and after the game.
Germany goes crazy for these 4 weeks and it is an unforgettable time.

Today Germany 3-0 Ecuador, and Poland 2-1 Costa Rica
Also England 2-2 Sweden, and Paraguay 2-0 Trinidad & Tobago

Ghana 2-1 USA
Czech Rep 0-2 Italy

Italy and Ghana go through to the 2nd round.

Ghana's second goal was from a penalty which should never ever have been given - a terrible dive from the Ghanaian, and the referee made a very bad decision. Just after the US had equalised as well... After that, the US team seemed to lose heart a bit, which was a shame.

So the World Cup is over for the US - too bad, it was a hard group to be in, and they lacked the edge needed to progress to the knockout rounds. They'll be back next time though, I'm sure

Australia 2-2 Croatia

Another refereeing nightmare in which the British referee lost count of how many yellow cards he'd given out and one player stayed on the pitch when he had officially been sent off. Later he was impossibly booked a third time and sent off anyway.

Australia go through to play Italy in the 2nd Round - the best World Cup performance in their history.

Brazil 4-1 Japan

Brazil go through to play Ghana in the next round, after ending Japan's hopes. We had the bizarre spectacle of Brazilian legend Ronaldo, who is considerably overweight and at times looks like he can hardly move, yet the goofy sod still managed to score twice. He has now equalled the all-time goalscoring record in the World Cup.

Argentina 2-1 Mexico

The best game I've seen in a long time. Mexico were not fancied to do well against the impressive Argentinians, but they seemed to know exactly what to do to stifle the Argentinians' creativity. Mexico scored first after 6 minutes, but Argentina equalised 4 minutes later. After that it was very evenly matched - even the bad refereeing evened itself out. Argentina should have had a man sent off, but they also had a perfectly good goal disallowed. It was fitting that such a fine game was decided by an incredible goal, by Maxi Rodriguez 8 minutes into extra time.

Argentina now face Germany in the quarter finals - hard to see how it could be better than this though

Why do I get the feeling that some fans of other countries' teams have a problem with acknowledging that another, previously underrated team is playing much better than expected and that England hasn't yet shown the form it is truly capable of? Football is a deceptively simple game. You score one more goal than the opposition and you win!

For all Australia's dominence they couldn't convert that into goals.

I think that video replays could work perhaps for penalities and to see if the ball had crossed the line

Brazil get through without looking very impressive. Fat Ronald scores again, and he's now the top World Cup scorer in history. He even managed to jog about a bit today

France 3-1 Spain

France successfully cancel out Spain's midfield cleverness, and thanks to Henry's simulation (I still like the guy but today he cheated), a free-kick leads to France's second, and decisive, goal. And I think their third was offside  As you can guess, I was supporting Spain :(

So the quarter-finals are all sorted out:

Argentina-Germany

Meh, don't get me started. I am still mourning.

I could start blaming it on the referee, but the entire country has been doing that for days. I will just stick with the 'We were better, Portugal was smarter' phrase. Apparently the parasites part was partly edited after they got many protests, but the original version of the article was already on many Italian sites.

OK, I've read it... what can I say, it is by Achim Achilles (I now know why he uses a pseudonym) - he really meant it as a satire on clichés, but I can totally understand why this would upset readers (in Germany and Italy alike). I've read some of his other columns in the past and it is obvious that he's definitely not some right-wing writer. On the contrary, he's spoken out against neo-fascism and anti-semitism in past articles but unfortunately always in that over-the-top manner.

The bitter truth is... he simply can't write. A single writer like him does not represent Germany - maybe that will change your mind about keeping your fingers crossed for us? ;) :D

No problem, thanks for clearing this up. :)

About your grandmother's food... then you apparently haven't tried the *right* meals yet. Plenty of good stuff to try out! Just make sure you avoid "restaurants" that claim to offer German kitchen with Sauerkraut, Würstl, Knödel, waitresses named Heidi and Bavarian kitsch - THAT is not Germany. I know what you mean, though. It really depends on the recipe, the ingredients and (no offense to your grandmother) the cook.
Nevertheless, I understand and share your weakness for Italian food!

I watched the penalty kicks and my grandmother would've made better kicks than those pansies for Argentina that missed. Then at the end of the match Argentina showed their true sore loser colors by trying to stir things up. Well, theyre going back to Agrentina, which as far as I'm concerned is exactly where they deserve to be! My whole family was watching at my house. It was just great. Then my uncle called form Munich after the match. As for the semi-finals, as far as I'm concerned it doesnt matter who wins between Ukraine and Italy. Ukraine is lucky to even be where they are and Italy is EXTREMELY overrated as far a I can see it. I would love to see Brazil in the final so we can avenge 2002. But England would be nice as well. Ha! my mom just put the German flag up outside our house nxt to the american one.

ON DEUTCHLAND!!!I was supporting Germany through the whole game but I wouldn't go that far. Argentina proved they are a remarkable team at present. Whenever it goes to the shoot out I would consider that a statement that either team were good enough to go through. It came down to the nerves and split-second decisions of the keepers, one of whom was a substitute, keeping in mind. It really was an even match making it all the more exciting. I say that as a keen Germany supporter too. My mother is German and my father is British and both sides are in excitement mode although my father is the one who gets to be in Germany at the moment. I'll be cheering just as hard for England and if they win I won't know who to cheer for.

Let's be fair, Argentina was definitely not overrated. They showed a lot of strength and thank God the German team was equally strong, otherwise this would've been the end. As far as the penalty kicks are concerned, Argentina wasn't THAT bad either - in the end, it was also a question of luck, at least in THIS match.

Argentina were the better side. "How can you say that", I hear you cry... They behaved like sides who know how good they are often do. They dominate, score a goal, then sit back and wait for the final whistle. Mistake #1. Then the coach takes off his best player and makes some dodgy substitutions. Mistake #2. The coach has already quit, by the way, before the tsunami of Argentine anger hits him...

The goalkeeper having to be taken off must have upset their balance a lot too. I used to play in goal, and it is extremely difficult to come on in the middle of a game and find the rhythm of your team and connect with your defenders, all of whom are worried that you're nervous. Germany will also have been encouraged by it. And then to face a penalty shoot-out - well, the guy was under major pressure. On top of that, they faced the best penalty shoot-out specialists in the game. Germany are just near-impossible to beat at penalties, they just seem to have iron nerves.

Argentina threw it away, and even though Germany were often dominated, they never gave up. They have a great chance to win the Cup - they'll meet Italy (who are currently blowing Ukraine away) in the semis. I'm just disappointed because all the sides I like to watch are now out :(

Yeah, I agree - a penalty shoot-out is an awful way to lose a game, but fans generally love it, even though the players hate it. Last time they had a system whereby you play half an hour's extra time and the first team to score wins the game, and the game ends right there and then - but they dropped it for this tournament. Not really sure why, maybe fans complained?

Rooney deserved to be sent off. He stood on Carvalho's balls, on purpose, then he shoved Cristiano Ronaldo (who admittedly stuck his face in where it wasn't needed). It's either violent conduct or serious foul play. Rooney has always had a temper problem, and Ronaldo (his Man Utd team-mate) must surely have told his team to play on that, knowing that Rooney would lose his cool. As we saw, Rooney lost his cool and got sent off.

But then I thought that Italy's penalty against Australia was justified as well. The Aussie defender went to ground at an attacker's feet, and the attacker fell over him. Penalty. Almost no referee would have let that go.

Also, I don't see the point of taking an unknown 17 yr old with you, if he dosn't play at all, why wasn't he put on for the last 20 minutes, they were going to loose anyway, so it might not have made any difference, but at least he could have worn an English shirt.

I don't think England were rubbish. I don't think they played to their potential but they were not rubbish. You don't get to the quarters if you are rubbish. Argentina and Brazil went out too and they are not rubbish.

Owen Hargreaves was indeed "rubbish" so I'm not sure we were watching the same team. Frank Lampard was crap as well. Apart from those two I thought they were an OK team. Rooney was just acting his age. If he had some support up front it never would have happened. Walcott should have come on without a doubt at half time.

As for penalties, if four of your top penalty kickers are missing (Beckham, Rooney, Cole, Owen) then its not going to be very good really.

why wasn't he put on for the last 20 minutes, they were going to loose anyway, so it might not have made any difference

I thought they did pretty damn well with 10 men, as did Scolari, the Portugal coach. They still had chances to the end so I disagree with that comment. Oh its "lose" btw not "loose". Where are David and the spelling police! :D

Playing with 10 men, yes, I agree MFM, they did do very well considering (they even had some great chances but failed to finish them ), but it shouldn't really have gotten to that point to be honest..Rooney is young and not mature (too much money and a crazy lifestyle too quickly, I fear) but he was a wally at the end of the day.
I think Theo should have gone on yes, absolutely, but surely Sven could have seen it was all going down the toilet with 20 mins to go (we could), and he'd have had nothing to lose with putting out this guy, he so strongly wanted to bring with the team.

...actually Gail, I hate to admit it but I too think the French might pull it off, they seem to have improved as the game goes on, wer'e not that bothered now, really who wins.Could be a German/ French final.

Which leaves Germany. Now being English technically I should not support them. They are our arch enemies on the pitch (and off it too judging by history) but I like the way they are playing and they seem very much in control.

England won the World Cup when it was held in England in '66

So logically Germany will win it in Germany in '06

As for France, they outplayed the Brazilians completely as far as I could see it. More knowledgeable football minds than myself may disagree, but I believe France will win over Portugal even thought their coach has won 12 consecutive eorld cup matches. BTW, to my English friends, the fact that Beckham gave up his captaincy of the team was pretty big news over here. I'm sure it was there as well.

I support the germans from now on. From the teams left, they play closest to the dutch style. I have to overwin some syndroms but if one's fair: Germany plays the most daring game. But to name Argentina more intimidating than Italy is far from realistic. They were back in the days but today it's the portuguese and italians who play the best psychodrama. Awful, but effective.

no, germany, if they stay cool-why not, it's their strength- will be playing Portugal in the final. And win by penaltyshootout.

Until now, the french have played one good game. They're gonna overestimate themselves after they've beaten Brasil. Portugal is more realistic. They did not play ONE good game this tournament, but got into the semis. They KNOW that they are the surprise and will act like it: wait until the opponent makes the mistake. And they have an even better penaltykiller in their goal than germany. The germans will win it because they donot place their penalties IN the net, but their aim is THROUGH the net: it's that total focus that will bring them their victory.

Unbelievable to hear that from my mouth. I'll have to live with AGAIN four years living next to the Weltmeister. Brrrr.

It wasn't supposed to hurt, its just true. I was amazed at what I thought was a pretty unbeatable team failing to live up to their skills. I wore a Holland 1988 shirt at school that year for sports and got the piss taken out of me during the world cup from my friends. I was gutted. Van Basten was an amazing striker and its a shame injuries really stopped him reaching his best. Gullit works for one of our TV stations and is no doubt commentating tonight. Italy 2-0 Germany
Grosso 119"
Del Piero 120"

What a fantastic goal to win a fantastic game, and then comes another one!!

One of the most dramatic games I've seen in a long time. Italy had to avoid penalties, they knew they'd lose - and they had to wait till the very end to win it. Such a shame for Germany, they played incredibly well, especially Lehmann in goal. They've been great hosts, and it's a shame they're out, but Italy will make worthy finalists if they play like that in the final.

Maybe we'll get Italy-France in the final, like we should have had in '82...

Not bad for a not very intimidating team. :D Great game, and we've been fantastic. I'm very happy for Alex Del Piero he needed to score, after been very heavily criticized here. One of the best aspects of the game was how the two teams have been correct.

By the way, I didn't know it was possible to whistle so loudly for 120 minutes.

Our players are saying they've not preferences for the final, but I think they would prefer France, to forget 1998 defeat.

Yes, this team looks quite promising, in a few more years these young talents could become a force to be reckoned with. ;) That's enough, Romy - that's the second time my comment about "intimidating" teams is being referenced.  I was talking about the psychological hurdle not about skills. Seriously, both teams were brilliant, and this was a great game to watch. And I agree, *this* is how you win/lose a game and finish it. So, congratulations Italy! However, it's time for a change of the rules, there's too much extra time. They should reduce it to 28 minutes - maximum ;)

It wasn't supposed to hurt, its just true. I was amazed at what I thought was a pretty unbeatable team failing to live up to their skills.

Totally true. It was a devastating waste of talent. The players wanted Cruijff as a coach because there were too many strong characters inside of the team. They needed a coach that automatically would place everyone in order just by his appearance and legend. The dutch FA played a political game by pointing out Beenhakker for the job and the team fell apart. Small disaster, since that was the most talented group we ever had. Shameful. Van Basten still doesn't want to talk about that WorldCup. Sorry 'bout your orange shirt-story. Have you ever wore it again?

France 1-0 Portugal
Zidane 33 (pen.)

A tight game of pretty high quality, and I think the best team won. France sat back a lot in the second half, but they were able to hold on reasonably easily, not like when they played South Korea... Portugal had their chances right to the end - particularly a potentially huge mistake by Saha just before the final whistle - but nothing worked out for them. Also people were getting a bit hacked off with their perpetual diving. So, A France/Italy final - let's hope it's a good one

Italy win the penalty shoot-out after Trezeguet misses his penalty. I think they just about deserved it, particularly after Zidane went nuts and head-butted Materazzi in the chest... Who knows what Materazzi said to Zidane to deserve that, but it must have upset him big time. First of all, that was a terrible call to allow the French penalty kick! That guy made a better dive than Greg Louganis! If France would've won the game because of that goal it would have been a disgrace in my opinion. I wholeheartedly congratulate the Italians on their win. They have had some misfortune in cup final history( Roberto Baggio in '94) and they have triumphed over recent adversity in Italy because of the big scandal there. To see a team win with those obstacles facing them is always a good thing. It's what makes sports so much fun to watch. Italy, now you are alone in second place all time in cup victories with 4. A hell of a lot of football fans will agree with you there - almost everyone says that video evidence should be brought in to give a clearer view of contentious decisions like fouls in the penalty box, offsides, and arguments over whether or not the ball crossed the goal-line. So many bad decisions have changed so many big games.

But FIFA always say they'll only introduce new legislation that can be brought in at every level of the game, i.e. even at the lowest level. Football at the low levels can't afford to video everything, so that's where the thing breaks down. Until FIFA will accept a slight disparity in the rules between top level football and lower level, we will have this problem.

Likewise possible answers like having two referees, one in each half of the pitch. Lower level football has a problem finding one referee half the time, let alone two. FIFA is dedicated to supporting grass roots football, and wants the game to be exactly the same all over, whether it's a World Cup final or a fourth division game somewhere in the middle of Africa...

As for what Materazzi said to Zidane, I've heard that it could be anything from an insult aimed at Zidane's mother, a racial insult (Zidane has Algerian roots), or even some jibe at Muslims being terrorists... but Zidane has promised to explain soon

Yup - I thought that too, especially considering he's had to put up with this kind of thing throughout his whole career. Some people say it was becasue he was tired and over-sensitive given the huge occasion - others say that it was exactly because it was his last game and the last chance to answer all those insults in the way he really wanted to. He does have a bit of a history of being a bit violent - he's no stranger to being sent off.

Yes he should be able to rise above it but it must be difficult at times.

the Italian and Spanish game is rife with racism.

When England played Spain at Real Madrid's ground the black English players were subjected to monkey chants every time they touched the ball. The spanish manager Aragones called Tierry Henry a "black ****"

The fans of some Italian clubs (Lazio) are openly racist.

Paulo di Canio was photographed giving a nazi salute after one game!

Zidane shouldn't have done what he did. He should have left it at the time and then after the game (if the insult was racist) show up Matarazzi for what he said

the Italian and Spanish game is rife with racism.

GailI remember a piece on a sports channel here that talked about the racist element and how they hoped it wouldnt rear its head during the World Cup.

Hmm interesting. Werent you happy though for Italy? I mean with Baggio in 1994 and the scandal going on there now, for them to win it was really nice to see I thought.

I was definitely happy for Italy. It was the first final in ages that I didn't mind who won. By the end I was rooting for Italy - they were robbed in 2002, and they had bad luck as you say in '94, so their win was just fine by me.

I agree with Gail that it would have been better for Zidane to find Materazzi behind the scenes somewhere and deal with him then - but maybe he wanted everyone to see it all?

He did lead France to a victory in 1998, and that was secure no matter what happened. Perhaps he wouldve thought differently if France hadnt won before?

That may well be true - you must definitely have a different attitude if you've won it before. That might be why all of us armchair fans are amazed that he did it.

Look at how Australia lost in the round of 16. And I'm sure there's been signifigant matches in World Cup and otherwise that have been decided on a bad call like that.

Yeah, only thing is - that was a good call  at least I think it was. The referee had no choice but to give the penalty in that instance.

That's not really true. But I think soccer can bring out some of the worst feelings and that a lot of team fans all over the world (including Great Britain) have racist elements between them.

About many Lazio fans (not all), more than nazists, between them there are ignorant idiots nostalgic for fascism, in fact Di Canio is a Mussolini admirer and what he did wasn't a nazi but a fascist salute, that by the way in Italy is a crime to do.

About Zidane, players of every nationality say every sort of violent things on the field, only to have that kind of reactions from the opponents. The professionism of a player should be in doing the right thing. When Totti, at the European Championship spit on a Danish player, in Italy he was unanimously condemned for his gesture, nobody found excuses for him in what the Danish player told before being hit. They're paid millions of Euros also to behave responsibly. I think Zidane just lost his head, it happened to him before in critical moments.
