View Full Version : Maybe Stevie Should Only Tour with Friends?

This has been mentioned briefly in other threads- Stevie is so freaking animated and happy touring with Tom Petty. That kind of bugs me because it shows me that she *is* capable of showing emotion and movement during a show, and we just don't get that any more. Does she hate her own music (or is so bored with it) so much that she can't bring herself to act like she's having a good time? Watching her sing backup on American Girl almost made me cry. So, maybe she should always ask some musical friend to join her at all times? Maybe I'm just bitter because I missed this particular show and I feel like we'll never see that side of Stevie again. :distress:

I think she did really good on the GD tour for animation/movement/spirit.... A 100% improvement over the SYW tour!!. What I think happens is on her own she's got a whole 2 hours, or whatever it is, to sustain some sort of level of energy to get her through without putting it all out there on a couple of songs, then just standing there for the rest. So when she tones it down for her own shows abit, it probably just allows her not to burn out.
When she's a guest or sharing the stage - she can go nuts cause she's not carrying the show - and isn't there that much. Plus, I'm sure it's all about impact too - especially with these Petty shows. It seems most reviewers are saying she gives the show a shot of energy for the little time she's there... so that's a good thing - and memorable.
Just my guess.

I agree with you. I guess my thoughts are that perhaps she should limit her shows to an amount that will allow her to give a bit more of herself. If 100 shows (just a random number) vs say, 200 shows means that she will give everything she's got, then I say go for the smaller amount of shows. Obviously, that is going to cost her money, but...gah. I am a total chiffonhead and it kills me to say things like this. It just depresses me to see what she's capable of, even on a limited basis.

I think you're exactly right Macman. But there maybe a little boredom involved in touring with Fleetwood Mac and doing her own solo tours because of her insistence on playing it safe, i.e. her fear of changing the setlist much. When she's touring with others, she gets to sing different stuff.
And I think she had great energy and had fun during the Gold Dust Tour too.

Here's my take on the whole friends thing. This is not meant to diss Tom or Don Henley, but if I go to a show, I'm there to see Stevie. I was very pleased with her energy on the GD tour, especially Rock And Roll.

At the Nissan show last year, she mostly played it safe (at least she did vocally on "Stand Back," though she made up for the tame vocals with Live In Boston-esque ferocity in her twirls both during the bridge and in the closing coda). With "Fall From Grace," she played it safe on the long note for "survive." But she was effing amazing on "Rock And Roll."

But she was effing amazing on "Rock And Roll."I really hope if she tours again that is a part of her setlist. It was definitely the highlight of the tour for me.

I have loved seeing Stevie with her "friends" because the vibe is so different than it was during the SYW tour. One of the main differences, I think, is that she is able to relax with Tom and Don in a way that she isn't with Lindsey. For whatever reason.
Also, I agree that when she knows the demands on her are limited, she will put more out there because she isn't afraid of straining her voice too much and doesn't need to pace herself. Plus, the novelty of doing these different types of shows has to help.
So no, she shouldn't perform ONLY with her friends, but she should certainly continue to do it as long as she's enjoying it as much as she seems to be now.
I think during the recent Fleetwood Mac tour, not only was she going through menopause, but she also had that hip problem. I really don't think she was feeling all that great. She did play around with Lindsey a little. I think now though she's feeling a lot better, & it shows.

I was mentioning last night, that IMO, she seems fearful when solo, and guarded when w/ FM, and their limits. But w/ pals, like Tom or Don, she seems WAY more animated. I can't say that I thought her energy in LV was low, BUT in re-watching some dvd's, I thought OMG, does she just repeat the same moves over and over, and is that nerves or lack of choreography. lol
During INTK last night, she was off the hook high energy. The menopause and stuff could def be a factor, but yea it is sorta bothersome to see her several times and see a shade of the energy she has other nights =0(

I think this kind of sums it up-I firmly believe (and I have followed her career forever...) She has always wanted to prove that she can be the Headliner-The Main Act, so to speak...which she has proved. However, I think she struggles when the whole gig is on her shoulders. With FM, (and Lindsey) it is a constant struggle- egos, memories, power struggles whatever, which is a double edged sword intense/serious , bittersweet/magical but without Lindsey in the FM line-up..even she says it isn't Fleetwood Mac.
Anyway, in my opinion...She has always LOVED "running in the shadows", and coming out for a song or two, putting all her energy into a few tunes and then just stepping away from the lights, and just enjoying the show..
Like the rest of us.
Who wouldn't want to be singing "I Need to Know" with Tom and his band, backing you up!!! Looks like a blast!
I know I would love to be in her place, for that song and a duet of "Insider"
How can that not be fun...she even flubbed the lyrics to SDMHA and they were both laughing.
It must be completrly different to have the responsibility of a whole Solo Stevie tour night...Know what I mean???
And lastly, she has known all the guys in Tom's band since, what 1978??
So they are all friends- Ben played piano for her on her solos and Mike and she have written songs together...
How much more musically comfortable can you get???
Just my 2 cents :xoxo:

I think touring with FM, everytime the diarchy with Lindsey explodes, and she ends up compromising in tones and stage presence.
Touring alone IMO she feels too much the pressure of existing and non-existing expectations from the fans, and ends up compromising, mostly in the setlist.
Touring alone she seems to feel a lot freer. She's a rocker and loves to be in a big rocking band, doing the songs she loves. Maybe she should just semplify and do what she really wants, for the time she wants, without worrying for the fans who expect her to twirl or to listen to Stand Back.
