Montreux Jazz Festival to Honor Atlantic Records: 40th Celebration to Feature Star-Studded Tributes to Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegun
NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 06/14/2006 --

http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release_html_b1?release_id=135830

In celebration of this year's 40th Montreux Jazz Festival, two very special concerts will be presented in honor of Atlantic Records. The first concert, a tribute to Atlantic Founding Chairman Ahmet Ertegun, will take place on Friday, June 30th, the opening night of the festival. The second concert, on Sunday, July 2nd, will be dedicated to the late Nesuhi Ertegun, the pioneering jazz producer, educator, and music executive. Europe's premier annual music festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival was founded by Claude Nobs, with the help of Nesuhi Ertegun and Atlantic Records, among others.

The June 30th concert will feature some of the most important names in contemporary music, including a number of Atlantic Records' biggest stars, past and present. Among the artists slated to appear are, in alphabetical order: Jeff Beck, Solomon Burke, Chic, Phil Collins, George Duke, Chaka Khan, Kid Rock, Ben E. King, Bette Midler, Stevie Nicks, Paolo Nutini, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, and Steve Winwood, plus the Nile Rodgers Orchestra and the Atlantic Soul All-Stars featuring Les McCann, Cornell Dupree, Ronnie Cuber, Jerry Jermott, and Buddy Williams.

July 2nd will be a jazz night, in honor of Nesuhi Ertegun's devotion and contribution to the form. The evening will star the legendary Ornette Coleman, Brazilian jazz master Sergio Mendes, vocalist extraordinaire Chaka Khan, and a tribute to New Orleans jazz pioneer Kid Ory featuring Wycliffe Gordon (trombone), Evan Christopher (clarinet), Eddy Davis (banjo), Conal Fowlkes (bass/piano), and Joe Sample (piano).

In addition, on the evening of July 1st, the Montreux Jazz Festival will feature several artists associated with Atlantic Records, including jazz greats Stanley Clarke, George Duke, and Klaus Doldinger -- in a concert dedicated to legendary Atlantic producer Arif Mardin -- and current Downtown/Atlantic recording group Gnarls Barkley.

Since the first Montreux Jazz Festival in 1967, the event has grown to encompass artists spanning a wide musical spectrum, including jazz, blues, soul, R&B, gospel, rock, pop, hip-hop, and world music. This year's festival will run from June 30th through July 15th -- 16 days of concerts taking place simultaneously at three different venues. The Atlantic events will both be held in the largest hall, the 3,500-seat Auditorium Stravinski.

The city of Montreux, Switzerland is situated at the foot of the Alps on the banks of Lake Geneva, in the region known as the "Swiss Riviera."

Cool. But that b*tch has a lot of nerve to be out of the country on my b-day, when she should be in my back yard.

So, is she just going because her label is making her? It doesn't sound exactly like her "thing".

So, is she just going because her label is making her? It doesn't sound exactly like her "thing".I would say this is totally out of friendship and loyalty to Ahmet Ertegun, since she's no longer on Atlantic Records (and therefore they can't "make" her perform).

Anytime I hear Mr. Ertegun's name (and yes, I've recognized it since I was a teen surprisingly!) I think of my favorite entertainers. His name is synonomous with the most well known names in the music business because he is responsible (for the most part) for their success in the industry. Most important to me would have to be Stevie, the Bee Gees, Tori Amos and the late and great Laura Branigan. No one else in the music business has discovered and produced such a large amount of talent (not even Sir George Martin!). He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 (http://www.rockhall.com/hof/inductee.asp?id=99). He was interviewed by CNN once and you can find the video link here (http://archives.cnn.com/1999/SHOWBIZ/Music/12/27/wb.ertegun/index.html) in their archives. Here's some old articles below to show just how important he truly is!

Interrogating Ahmet Ertegun
By A.L. Bardach
Posted Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at 1:13 PM ET

In 1947, Ahmet Ertegun, the 24-year-old son of a distinguished Turkish diplomat, borrowed $10,000 from his dentist and, with his older brother Nesuhi and another friend, formed Atlantic Records. Over the next 50 years, Ertegun would discover, sign, popularize, and/or produce Ray Charles, Bobby Darin, Aretha Franklin, the Rolling Stones, Otis Redding—who called him "Omelette"—Bette Midler, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, Booker T. and the MGs, Sam and Dave, Cream,http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/GiniLeaE/musicians/BeeGeesSmallBanner.jpg, Led Zeppelin, the Coasters, John Coltrane, Charlie Mingus, Roberta Flack, the Spinners, the Allman Brothers, Genesis, Foreigner, Pete Townshend,http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/GiniLeaE/Stevie%20Nicks/stevienickstitle.gif, Buffalo Springfield, the Blues Brothers,http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y247/GiniLeaE/musicians/toriamos.gif, and Phil Collins, among others.

The Bee Gees w/ Ahmet @ their 20th Anniversary Party
Ahmet's Atlantic: Shake, Rattle and Roll
By RICHARD CORLISS
Posted Saturday, Jul. 28, 2001

Ahmet Ertegun will be 78 on Tuesday. I don't know who'll be attending his party, but I know who could sing "Happy Birthday": Ray Charles, Mick Jagger, Aretha Franklin, Robert Plant, Bette Midler, Percy Sledge, Wilson Pickett, Cher, Phil Collins, Roberta Flack, the Bee Gees, Tori Amos, and whatever members of the Coasters and the Drifters are still prowling the oldies shows. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller could rewrite the anthem, give it a bluesy feel. Let Phil Spector produce the tune, with Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page on guitar. And in the heavenly choir: Clyde McPhatter, Big Joe Turner, LaVern Baker, Bobby Darin, Chuck Willis, Otis Redding, Joe Tex, Greg Allman and Dusty Springfield.

These are just some of the rock and pop luminaries signed by Atlantic Records, the label Ertegun founded with Herb Abramson in 1947 and headed for most of the next half-century. In the '50s, with Charles and Darin, he juggled and helped merge black and white music. In the '60s, Atlantic was the top exponent of both Brill Building pop and Muscle Shoals soul. The company kept finding and promoting good sounds, and in 1987, on the outfit's 40th anniversary, Ertegun and his longtime partner Jerry Wexler were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

POP CONCERT: LAURA BRANIGAN
By STEPHEN HOLDEN
Published: September 11, 1983

It was more than two years ago that the chairman of Atlantic Records, Ahmet Ertegun, the man responsible for Bette Midler's recording career, ''presented'' his latest protegee, Laura Branigan, in a concert at the Bottom Line. Since that concert, at which Miss Branigan seemed to be casting about for a musical identity, the singer has had three hits - ''Gloria,'' ''Solitaire'' and ''How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?'' - that have more or less established her as an American echo of European pop singers like the women in Abba.

Miss Branigan has a thin, tense soprano with a buzzing vibrato and reasonable powers of projection. But like her European counterparts, she lets a mechanical precision of phrase squelch any natural emotiveness.

On Friday at Carnegie Hall, where she was backed by a seven-piece band and two vocalists, Miss Branigan applied her careful, high-strung delivery to songs like the Who's ''Squeeze Box'' and Carole King's ''Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,'' as well as to her hits.

The more challenging the song - and the Who's idiomatic and naughty ''Squeeze Box'' is a quirky little rock gem - the more Miss Branigan sang by rote, showing little personality or rhythmic verve. But delivering her hits - especially ''Gloria,'' which is a cheerleader's delight - Miss Branigan animated her mechanical skill with an engaging exuberance.

Heh I cant believe it, it actually worked for me, first time ever. Maybe because the clips were short. But anyway, yeah I absolutely agree with everyone so far, her vocal SHOCKED me. I think she's been slowly getting MUCH better the past few years witht he Gold Dust then Petty tours, but this here Woodstock is her best sounding Rock Vocal since Enchanted, Then Dance or maybe even Street Angel.

Stevie finally gets her fat, lazy, mostly uninspired ass out there and turns in a ferocious vocal and the collective response is a yawn. Only about 4 people even comment on it.

Uhhh wow...I will get around to hearing this soon, but I agree with Sparky, this is great, maybe people aren't reading the thread? This is a massive thing to comment on, Stevie has been going more out there in the last year or two and I don't think has been getting as much credit as she deserves, I'm glad she's mixing it up by her standards and I think the quality of her performances at the moment (which are high) demonstrate she must be in a pretty happy place at the moment.
