Just finished reading the thread below about the Turner guitars so I thought I'd start a discussion on his early guitars/playing. Anyone know what he used to record his guitar parts for Fleetwood Mac and Rumours? From all of the videos I've seen he mostly used the white Les Paul when they performed live and occasionally a telecaster or strat but it's a little harder to tell on the album versions what he used where (granted, I'm just a casual guitarist). Besides that, anyone know what effects he may have been using in the 70's?

When he first joined FMac, he was using Teles exclusively (from what I've read)...it was Mick & John (according to Mick's book) who pretty much forced him into using Les Pauls by saying that the Les Paul was "the Fleetwood Mac guitar" (since it was, for the most part...almost exclusively used by Peter, Danny & both Bobs)
From what I read back in the early '80's, Lindsey uses his Turner M1 mostly for live work, rarely in the studio. He still would use a variety of guitars for the studio...Teles, Strats, Gretches, Les Pauls, Dobros, etc. The M1 can cover the tonal quality of those guitars in live situations so that Lindsey doesn't have to change guitars every song (like Mike Campbell & Tom Petty do).

I read in a relatively recent interview that his main studio guitar nowadays is an older white strat with a certain processor (since forgotten the model) and he said he could get almost any sound he wanted out of it. It's probably the same Strat he used in the Soundstage performance for a couple of songs last year.
Back to the old days, I've also read that Mick and John talked him into flipping the neck magnet on his Les Paul the way Peter Green did to get that kinda thin out-of-phase tone and my ears could be tricking me but it sounds to me like that was his main studio guitar during the mid-70's with a couple of exceptions. The original version of Silver Springs for one sounds like a Telecaster with the whole volume pedal/reverb thing. He's also mentioned that Over My Head was one of the few songs he played with a pick (as well as using a strat). His main acoustic from what I gather was the Martin D28 he's had since he was a kid.

I'm sure I've seen a picture of Lindsey using a Fender Jaguar or maybe it was a Jazzmaster. During the Tusk tour perhaps?

Here's a screen shot of the November 25, 1979, video from that song. Can you make out the guitar?

It's a Fender VI...it's a six string bass (same kind of bass that Jack Bruce used on the first Cream album). Yes, it has a similar body shape to the Jaguar & Jazzmasters.

thanks! :D
he also had several other les pauls prior to making the switch to the Turners for performing live. There are a couple of pictures floating around of him using an ebony lp in the mid 70's and in '79 his main axe was a honeyburst les paul. Now that I think of it, he also used a nylon string Ovation for some of the acoustic numbers.
Effects....he's said that he was using an old broken two-track recorder for distortion in the early 70's (not sure if he used it for recording though). On Tusk it sounds like he started using compressors a lot more.

Is this the one?
Also, is that the one you are talking about in the second pic?

Yeah, the first picture is of the guitar he was using during live performances for some songs right before he switched to the Turner. There's also a scene in the Tusk doc. in the studio where he's playing it. Also, I may be wrong but someone told me a while ago that they had read that that guitar had been stolen.
The white one in the second picture is the 25th anniv. lp that was his main guitar in the 70's
here's a picture from the Buckingham-Nicks site of him playing the ebony lp

Lindsey as far as I know used Gibson "Les Paul" in the eary and mid 70's. He wanted something that could do more, so someone suggested he hook up with Rick Turner in Los Angeles, which he did. The Turner Model 1 Renaissance has a parobolic EQ built into it and a rotating pick up, so the sound can changed there and then. Lindsey is unique, in that he has strong fingernails and uses a folk & banjo style of playing using his fingers and not a plectrum.
Lindsey made the Turner Model 1 famous by his almost exclusive use of it. I own one of his ex Turners dated 1981.
Hope this helps into some insight.

Whilst he may have used a Strat back in the early days when Leo Fender was making them, pre Turner he used Gibsons. I fact if you note his semi accoustic ones he may use on stage, he still does from time to time. (Gibson)

P.S. Sorry for the earlier post but a friend played a trick on me whilst I was away from the keyboard LOL

Also, is that the one you are talking about in the second pic?The first pic with the sunburst Gibson is from the 1978 tour, not 1979. Lindsey used the Turner for the entire 1979 tour. You can see it in the rehearsal footage, too.
