View Full Version : KLSX Interview With Jim Ladd - Street Angel
David

I put up another Street Angel interview, using SaveFile.com, which Romy recommended. I hope the files are more available this way than with YouSend.
This interview is with Jim Ladd on KLSX in Los Angeles, while Stevie was on tour for Street Angel -- August 23, 1994. I know it's fashionable these days to minimize Jim Ladd's importance to Stevie & usefulness to fans, but for my money there's just no comparison between him & anyone else in radio in terms of getting the best Stevie possible at the microphone. For example, that 1987 Tampa thing from the other day. The DJ was a typically annoying, yapping motor-mouth, the way they all are. Those guys are there to hear themselves yap--they get off on it--not to let their guests be heard. They have absolutely nothing to add to our understanding of Stevie--or even of music in general. But Jim is vastly different. He lets Stevie talk & she talks. He pulls out of her, virtually every time he talks to her, a rounded, complete conversation, a meaningful exchange of deep ideas, passing thoughts & surprising emotions, & she delivers, too. Every one of her interviews with him is a dramatic, emotional experience that is comparable to any one of her albums. You feel as if you had spent serious time with Stevie, when Jim is at the helm, & she lives it all with you. Jim interviewing Stevie is like a radical Stevie movie.

Thanks David. These are cool. Except it was frustrating when Stevie didn't get "synapse grid".

Thanks David!
I miss Jim Ladd, and even though I am glad he is on terrestrial radio in LA, I wish he had a show on Satellite, so I could listen. Last month, when I visited my mom in LA, I caught his show just as I was leaving town, and I held the signal all the way into Santa Barbara. It was a perfect playlist, and I had a magical night drive.

Thanks so much for sharing these, David.
Quick question -- is there something missing between part 1 and part 2?

I just finished part 5 and Jim suggested that Stevie should someday cover "Love Minus Zero/No Limit."
Lindsey must've been listening that night! ;)

Guess im in lots of trouble then huh!
Yes i shall admit that i do not have that album!! I had it, i remember not liking it, this is years ago when i wasn't into her as much as i am now, and i gave it to my stepmother.... nobody ever talks about it and hardly acknowledges it. It seems to be the forgotten/ignored album

I thought so too at first, but then I noticed it had only downloaded half the files. Try downloading them again, that worked for me.

Was I wrong to skip through that one woman blathering on and on? Radio callers can be the worst, and once I felt she wasn't going to ask any worthwhile question, I just skipped over it.

Combine that with the woman asking about her best friend's baby that she 'adopted' and it's no wonder Stevie could barely get through Rhiannon afterwards. Some people are idiots, who asks those kind of questions really?

She sounded super depressed, to me-- even before the sad stories and upsetting personal questions. I guess that fits in with her timeline. I just thought her voice sounded flatter and more timid when she spoke than in interviews from late 90s onward, such as the one Jim Ladd did before Vegas last year (it was in March, I think). That one is much more animated, and she's so funny in it, too. Jim Ladd was great w/ Stevie in this one, though (except for the "moist" part). I haven't heard many of his interviews, so I'm glad I got to listen to this, and she did have some interesting and honest answers. Thanks for posting this.

I know! I couldn't believe when that caller asked about Robin's son. I almost died and you can totally feel the tension in that studio. It was so uncomfortable. Are those calls screened before they hit the airwaves? But still, a good interview.
