Not to seem heartless..

But I saw a man once get hit by a car, he put a huge dent in the windshield - flew some 15 feet in the air and fell - all in front of my eyes.

No one in the world gave a ****.

A FOOTBALL player gets injured and the world is in an uproar.

Why does this society put the lives of football players above others? It PISSES me off. Seriously.

There was some controversy last year (or was it the year before) when it was revealed that "Big Ben" doesn't wear a helmet. A lot of people felt that it was a bad example for a football player to set when there are so many kids looking up to them.
Well, I guess he showed all of those children exactly why it's important to wear a helmet.

I wish the guy a speedy recovery and hopefully some common sense in the future.

You have no idea honey...it was on all the local stations for HOURS. They treated like a nuclear bomb was set off. This is Pittsburgh, though, where all that matters is football. I'm not unfeeling; I am upset that someone got hurt, but the key word is SOMEONE. Everyone's freaking out because it's Ben, and I'm sure 90% of them are more worried about the Steelers not having their star quarterback than about Ben as a person.

Now, as far as the helmet matter goes, I always say I hate preventative laws (I know that's not a word, I still use it though), such as wearing a helmet or a seat belt. These should be encouraged, but not forced. If I don't want to wear my seat belt (although I personally always wear it), don't tell me that I have to. It's my own body and life, I can do with it as I please. If Ben didn't want to wear a helmet, he shouldn't have had to. Now he's hurt, and in this case wearing a helmet might have saved him from a lot of injury, but I believe it was just yesterday that there was a story about how more people get injured wearing helmets than those who don't wear them.

I saw a package on ESPN about Roethlisberger's accident. They interviewed several other players whose lives were altered by motorcycle accidents. Several of them said they didn't have helmets on because there were no laws in place. One of the football players (a former defensive back with the New York Jets) said the only reason he was wearing a helmet was that he was in Georgia and it was state law.

As far as I'm concerned, it's a matter of responsibility. Roethlisberger didn't wear a helmet. He should have. The Steelers should have required him to either put up the bike for good or to wear a helmet in the offseason.

Frankly, I think states should require motorcycle drivers to wear helmets and people to wear seatbelts. The injuries and deaths those two can prevent far outweigh the inconvenience they cause in the minds of those "free spirits." Because Roethlisberger wanted to ride a bike with no helmet for whatever reason, he could have thrown his career away. He's damn lucky to be alive for Pete's sake!

And here's where I look like a giant jerk BUT...I disagree.

If you're dumb enough to not wear a helmet then that's your bag of chips. If you're dumb enough not to wear a seatbelt - your bag of chips.

There is something that is quickly diminishing in this society and it's called personal responsibility.

Not to say that I'm not sorry someone was hurt, I don't mean to come across as heartless. But do you realize that at the moment this guy was in an accident and seriously injured (because of a choice he made) that someone else somewhere was being brutally beaten or raped, someone was dying at the hand of another, a child somewhere was dying of starvation - there are bigger fish to fy in this world than requiring someone to wear a helmet.

I so sound like I don't value human life or like a big old jerk - but seriously, if we keep making laws protecting people from themselves then people will never learn anything - society already panders to the stupid and irresponsible as it is.

I have to come back on here to comment on this.

It seems to me over in the UK that football players in the States don't get judged in the way regular people do.

Substance abuse, physical abuse, sexual assault, rape, murder (or innocence in OJ's case  ) leaving the scene of an accident, shooting somebody, car crash, bike crash, plane crash.. You name it and they have done it and in most cases both the law and the media seem to turn the other way. The player then says something about how it was a mistake, that they have learned and will seek help. The NFL "protects" its assets and then its forgotten... Until they do it again..

It pisses me off.

Just to add to Deanna's comments. Not wearing a helmet or seatbelt is your own fault and your responsibility. If you kill or injure an innocent party because you choose to not bother then you should burn in hell. If you sit in the back of a car without a seatbelt, it crashes and you kill the person in front of you, a person that is wearing a seatbelt, then you should be procecuted to the limit of the law. Killing yourself is fine. Killing somebody else isn't..

Europe has been very strict about helmets and seatbelts for a very long time but America still seems to be in the dark ages here.

It pisses me off too. I love American football, but the players are seen as celebrities, people to worship and be jealous of. They are no longer role models for young people, that's for sure. It's all about the money, and the bling (sorry, Dee  ) and the clothes & the cars & the houses.

And apparently they're above the law, and more important that the Average Joe, and when they make a mistake, we're all supposed to forgive & forget. In the meantime, when Average Joe makes the same mistakes, he goes to jail.

Ok, if you want "cold", here's "cold":

I think anything that "thins the herd" is ok. The world is overpopulated by humans...humans are destroying the planet. Killing off species of plants & animals to the point of extinction, chopping down atmosphere generating rainforests. There's just too many of us here.

Wars through the millenia have kept humanity's numbers at bay. Once we took a stance for peace, once we tried to cure disease, once we try to keep people alive in vehicles, it all went to ****. Basically, humans are to the earth what cancer cells are to the human body.

Not here in Canada. We are underpopulated. That is why we let everyone and their dog into our country.

I think he was an absolute idiot for not wearing a helmet. In fact, he may be in "hot water" because of the way his contract is worded - i.e. he is not to engage in any highly dangerous activities. I think this would classify as such. It is probably going to hit him in the pocketbook, which it should.:distress:

What pisses me off is when the cost of the lack of personal responsibility is passed on to us via increased insurance premiums and taxes. Wear a freakin' seatbelt and helmet from heaven's sake!!

I do, however, abhor the govt. telling me to do so.

This is a really good guy and I hope he recovers.

He's actually a womanizing asshole. Tells girls to "put out or get out." Etc.

I hope he recovers as much as the next person, but he's an idiot for not wearing a helmet, so I can't really sympathize. It was his decision to not wear the helmet. There are tons of "GET WELL BEN!" signs up all over the city, and morons holding candle-light vigils outside of Mercy Hospital. One of my mom's co-workers had a farking nervous breakdown because of this.

I really hate my town.

SONOFA!!! You're kidding - and yet I bet there will be no penalty whatsoever for that. PISSES ME OFF!!!! This is his fault!!!!

This reminds me of a time in high school - this football player guy (who was a raging asshole to everyone for absolutely no reason) got drunk and stoned one morning before school, got into his car and was in a horrendous accident. Well the whole damn school was in a frenzy - wearing Zack ribbons etc...he didn't die, he was in a coma...

Well anyway - a couple of weeks later this kid DIES in drivers ed class!!! Just has a heart attack and dies right there in school. A little loud speaker announcement was made - that was it. Nothing. Because he wasn't a football player...he was a "nobody" so no one cared.

I refused to wear any Zack ribbons or participate in any "get well Zack" **** - it's not that I didn't want him to recover - it was the principle of the matter - I feel the same way about this situation.

PISSES ME OFF

And yet so typical. My ex-boyfriend has a similar story. In his high school a football player was seriously injured due to his own stupidity. At the same time my ex's best friend Erin (who wasn't a football player or cheerleader) died in a camping accident. No one said anything - yet at graduation everyone was REQUIRED to wear a ribbon for the football player - my ex refused - and they were not going to let him graduate because of that  He and his parents fought that and they had it taken care of.

Sick. The way athletes are pandered to in our society is just sick.

I'm so glad that I'm finished with school for the summer, because I go to school with coach Cowher's kids. I can only imagine the craziness that would ensue.
