one of the most interesting artists out there - and singer of one of my favorite songs, Give It Up. at NOTS, I was backstage with his "daughter" Ericka Aviance. why hasn't this been publicized more? where are the leaders of the community?

anyway, here's the story.

NEW YORK - A singer suffered a broken jaw and other injuries in an attack by a group yelling anti-gay slurs, yet he hopes to perform again by the end of the month, police and his publicist said.

Kevin Aviance, 38, whose songs have topped the Billboard dance chart, is expected to be released Monday from the hospital where he underwent surgery, publicist Len Evans said.

Four people were arrested on hate-crime charges, police said.

Aviance's jaw is wired shut, but he hopes to perform in the city's Gay Pride parade at the end of the month, Evans said. The agent had said earlier that Aviance would not be able to sing at the event.

"He's going to try to get his strength back so that he can perform," he said.

Aviance's song "Alive" hit the top of the chart in 2002. His other popular songs have included "Give It Up," released in 2004, and "Din Da Da," which topped the Billboard dance chart in 1997.

A group of six or seven males attacked the singer early Saturday on a corner in Manhattan's East Village, Evans said. There were passers-by, but no one stopped to help as the attackers threw objects at him, Evans said.

Aviance performs in drag but was "dressed like a boy" when he was attacked, Evans said.

The four people arrested ranged in age from 16 to 20.

Hey Jason,

I'm aware of who Kevin is. Did this happen this past Saturday? That is a shame. Just goes to show we still live in an ignorant world with a lot of idiots and their primitive way of thinking out there, very scary.

where are the leaders of the community?

We have no leaders and the ones that think they are leaders do little more than self-promotion.

I have to say, I was shocked to see that something like this happened in NYC. Very sad. :distress:

exactly. you are exactly correct. while they run around chasing celebrities asses to give them awards, incidents like these are neglected. pride month this month, all the people with their rainbow flags while people are being bashed in plain view. it's such bull****.

I bet if Kevin were straight, more famous or a different skin color this would get the attention it deserves.

but that is wrong, just wrong.

Prosecute their asses to the fullest extent allowable is what I say.

We have a huge rainbow flag at the corner of Castro and Market, which is put at half-mast when "well-known" gays die. The "leaders" in charge of it initally refused to lower it for Gwen Araujo, a latina transgendered teenager, who was murdered. This a month after lowering it for a gay white cop who was killed in duty.

When we called the so-called leaders to ask that the flag be lowered, the answer was "we have to draw the line somewhere". That led to a lot of screaming and finally they lowered it.

I remember Gwen. such a horrible story. she and Jessie Valencia did not get the kind of recognition their stories should have.

with respect to lowering the flag, where the hell did he want to draw the line?

I think he wanted to draw the line after the "G" in "LGBT". :distress:

sadly that's where a lot of people in the "community" want to draw the line.

Interstingly enough I've been reading articles lately about the racism that exists in the LGBT "community" and that is SO disturbing :distress:

oh hell yeah. there's just as much prejudice within the community that it's sickening sometimes.

bi and trans people have a hard time being accepted b/c of the stereotypes and all the prejudice surrounding them. it's so weird that anyone who must fight to be equal would then turn around and look down on someone else that's "different"

Huge problem here in San Francisco. You'd think that oppressed people would be less likely to oppress others, but that is not the case.

You are right to put the word "community" in quotes. There really is no LGBT community, just a collection of subcommunities tied together by the common link of being attracted to the same gender.

Yeah - I guess even the opressed need to feel above someone else

And yeah, I learned long ago that "community" was a farce. I was lucky enough to be a part of a really cool community my senior year of high school going into college - then it all crumbled and became so segmented and well non-community-like. It was sad.

This kind of **** even happens in San Francisco as well.Although out here I think bystanders might be slightly more inclined to help than they would be in NYC or certainly WEHO.

I remember reading about a straight man in San Francisco a few years ago who was beaten severely because he "looked gay", which pretty much shows the mentality of the kind of people who go out looking for somebody to gang up on. They aren't going to take their chances with the gay bodybuilder with the crew cut it seems.

Yeah, I'll bet he looked at them funny... :(

I remember a gay bashing that happened in Miami. The big news there was that Shaquille O'Neal (yes, the famous center for the Miami Heat in the NBA) chased down the guys who did it so the police could catch them and bring them to justice.

That got some play on Outsports, but it wasn't very well publicised elsewhere.
