David, you might want to wait a few weeks. Deepdiscountdvd.com usually has a 20 percent of sale in mid to late June with free shipping. I saved a bunch of money last year. I don't know for sure that they'll do it again this year, I'll let you know if they do.
My next dvd purchases will be "Arrested Development Season 3" and "The League of Gentlemen Season 3". I think there are a few more that I want but I can't think of them right now.

You know, I've never seen Marked Woman? Isn't that weird? Old Acquaintance and the Man Who Came to Dinner are a bit dull, if my memory serves me...No, wait, Old Acquaintance is with Miriam Hopkins? If so, that one is good!
What's in the Baby Jane special edition?
Jezebel....well, do I really have to say anything about that one? Perfect, wonderful, Bette at her best. It sucks that was made the same year as GWTW, otherwise she would've got the Oscar for sure.

What's in the Baby Jane special edition?
Copied from Amazon:
Commentary by author and film historian Charles Busch and film historian John Epperson (a/k/a "Lypsinka")
New documentary "Bette and Joan: Blind Ambition"
1994 documentary "All About Bette" hosted by Jodie Foster
"A Film Profile: Joan Crawford" featurette
"The Andy Williams Show" excerpt featuring Bette Davis
Vintage featurette: "Behind the Scenes with Baby Jane"
The Andy Williams clip is of Bette singing a rock song called "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" That's worth the price of the boxset right there I think!

I love Joan too much to switch sides. I've got that book. I found it fascinating. I only ever got into Joan because of Bette. So I'll be forever grateful to Bette for that. The problem I find is that even in Joan's stinkers theyre still enjoyable, but when Bette makes a crap movie, it's unwatchable! (Not that I'm in any way suggesting Jezebel falls into that category!)

Really???? I feel the opposite. I think Bette is always interesting to watch, crap movie or not. In fact, sometimes she's waaay better if the movie is crap. I dig the way she chews the scenery.
Admittedly, I've always thought Joan is very ugly, so that doesn't help. But, I also think she's not as good an actress ("She couldn't act her way out of a paper bag!").
So, this is interesting - what exactly are the qualities you like about Joan? Since I don't like her much, it would be great to see the good someone else sees in her.
I admire the longevity of both actresses. They just wanted to work, and they did.
For you Aries out there, those are two of the best! :p

I think Joan is one of the most beautiful actresses from the golden age of Hollywood. Especially from about '40-'45. I find her to be very commanding, like when she's onscreen you can't look at anything else. Her voice, her mannerisms I just love. Watching Baby Jane I agreed with the consensus that Bette was an actress and Joan was a star, but given the right role she could knock your socks off.
There's a hint of menace in Joan that I find intriguing too. In films like Queen Bee, and parts of Mildred Pierce I can see it. It's like she's someone you don't want to turn your back too. I love that hint of danger in her.
There's a pretty cool Joan video collage on youtube.com
http://youtube.com/watch?v=5goOPgau7Vs
Her delivery of some of the lines in that is just great. (EG: "I thought you were aware by this time that I'm not someone to be sent for like a kitchen maid" and "and you, you...slut!" Yowsa!)
Not that Bette didnt have any of those qualities. I just found Joan to be more refined:shrug:

Wow, those are all the same things I would say about Bette. Except the beauty part. But I wouldn't say that about Joan, either.
Interesting.
I agree with the hint of menace, definitely. Though I wouldn't call it a "hint" so much as "obvious".
I'll go look at youtube.

I think they were both beauties, albeit unconventional. How could anyone not be mesmerised by those Bette Davis Eyes (hehe). What I do like about Bette is that she was never afraid to ugly herself up for a part. With Joan she's always glamourous looking. The only movie I can think of where she doesnt look glam is Strange Cargo

ok, are you sure you're not my twin? because i totally had a crush on barbara, too. i also liked when the empty nest characters did cameos on gg - like when barbara showed up to arrest the cheeseman and carol went to blanche's midnight madness party.
oh, you know what ep i hate? the one where dorothy is diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. UGH. it's so bad that sometimes she's too tired to wash her hair ... and yet ... it's never mentioned again! inconsistency is just part of the golden girls charm, tho.

OMG - I love when Carol goes to the midnight madness party  And sophie tripping the Rabbi to "help a holy man"
---
Inconsitency and the gg?? You're kidding. ;) Things that annoy me other than what you mentioned above:
Miles - before he was Miles he was Arnie
2 different guys playing Glenn
Rose says in one ep she's never had cats because she's allergic - BUT in a flashback to the day she met Blanche she's got that cat...
there are some inconsistencies with the children of the ladies...
I think that's it....
I never did watch Golden Palace - though recently caught a few episodes on Lifetime...when/if it comes out on DVD I'll definitely buy it :D

I LOVE that movie! And LGWLDTL is a huge favorite! I remember when I saw Foxes, I was in highschool. My parents were gone, and for some bizarre reason I decided to take acid. Anyway, that movie came on TV, and it seemed so strange to me. Not from the acid, though. I loved how it was so seamy 1980 L.A..
And on the soundtrack there was the song Radio by Donna Summer - I was so excited to hear that song. I didn't really remember hearing that song officially ever, but somehow it was ensconced in my head. I was so happy I just kept singing and singing it.
Those are great choices. I don't buy DVD's, but I wouldn't mind having those. Jodie Foster is great, I've always liked her - but as a child/young actress, she is a revelation, a miracle. IMO.
I've got to see Foxes again....and I totally crush on Martin Sheen from LGLDTL.

Good Boy:) . They're both masterpieces. Jonathan Demme recently said that his next movie would be inspired from Fists in the pocket and China is near (gotta love Bellocchio:D ). Besides after a period of dumbness he returned to greatness, his most recent 5 films are fantastic too:
Il principe di Homburg (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119948/)
La balia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0139877/)
L'ora di religione (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317965/)
Buongiorno, notte (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377569/)
Il regista di matrimoni (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0433624/)
What have you just bought & what are you going to buy shortly?
I recently bought DVDs of:
On connait la chanson by Alain Resnais - Alain Resnais and an impressive cast explained exactly those moments in which life looks like a song.
2046 by Wong Kar Wai - it's less powerful than In the mood for love (and it's not the sequel, as someone wrote) but still the cinematic universe is rapturing.
La bestia nel cuore by Cristina Comencini - A family drama filled with very good acting (Giovanna Mezzogiorno, the leading actress has just been chosen to star in the new Mike Newell film from a Garcia Marquez novel, Love in the Time of Cholera), a striking story, unexpected humour, and the touch of a director who knows how to give a shape to the most complex emotions.
The list of those I'm gonna buy could be endless so I'll limit to 5:
Brokeback Mountain - I'm an Ang Lee fanatic and this movie is one of his best.
The great silence by Philip Groning - a German director documented 6 months of life in La grand Chartreuse monastery in France. IN the movie there aren't almost any words or music but I've rarely seen such a spiritual work of art about real life.
Matchpoint by Woody Allen - Sharp, tough, truthful, away from New York :blob1: (he needed a change IMO), unreconciled... Loved it.
Il Caimano by Nanni Moretti - The Italian director I admire the most, describing here our society and the dark Berlusconi's influence. In the same time a parody of cinema world and a touching portrait of a couple.
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance by Park Chan Wook - The third movie of the director's trilogy. Colours, time, food, objects, clothes become the storytellers as much as the actors. One of the best performances by an actress I've seen in recent years, and a sense of cinema that takes my breath away.

I'd actually never seen it. Amazon was having a buy 3 get 1 free sale on select DVDs and it was one of the choices. I haven't watched it yet; it just came in the mail today.

I've been indulging my inner comic book geek. I've recently purchased volumes 1 & 2 of 'Superman: The Animated Series,' volume 1 of 'Justice League,' volume 4 of 'Batman: The Animated Series,' and I've pre-ordered volume 3 of 'Superman:TAS,' and volume 2 of the 'Justice League.'
I also plan to pre-order Kevin Burns & Bryan Singer's documentary, 'Look, Up In The Sky! The Amazing Story of Superman.'
