I wasn't quite sure where to post this.
It would be interesting to ask Lindsey about the guitarists he has been interested in and maybe influenced by. I know that from 1971-1973 guitarist Domenic Troiano was recording with Keith Olsen and literally living at Sound City Studios. He cut two great critically acclaimed solo albums there for Mercury/Polydor between live and studio gigs with Bush and The James Gang. It would be impossible for Lindsey not to have heard a lot of him. Had Domenic not been repeatedly saying how he was finished with bands after The James Gang maybe Mick would have considered him after Welch gave notice. Both were admirers of Wes Montgomery, at least I think I remember a Lindsey interview mentioning Montgomery. So many seem to be mainly about relationships and a bit about producing both FM and other artists, but I think I've just been finding the wrong ones. There has been way too much said and written about the private lives for me, but others seem to really like that. Thanks in advance for any info about what helps makes Lindsey's fingers move so mesemerizingly at times. I feel like I hardly know where he comes from other than Fritz.

I've heard Lindsey say on several occasions that Scotty Moore, who played with Elvis, was a big influence. Obviously Merle Travis (the travis/hybrid/thumb picking thing Lindsey does so well) but, I think that was more on an unintentional influence. Lindsey also said Dave Mason's early stuff was an inspiration for learning lead playing. I think Chet Atkins was also an influence on him. I read also that Led Zeppelin was an influence, yet he says he never sat around trying to learn Led-licks.

Wow, a wide array of interests there. I don't play but it's funny that even I learned Stairway To Heaven (from my brother). :D
Lindsey was doing some great stuff on The Dance, I earned new respect for his playing from that.

Apart from the ones MyLittleDemon mentioned I can only think of a few.
Lindsey is obviously very fond of the Beach Boys and if you look at there guitar playing its the same "travis picking" technique, same goes for the Kingston trio. Thats all I can think of I'm afraid.

Yeah, I think Lindsey gained respect from the dance that people never gave him before.

Probably not, because he was already a member of the Guess Who at the time. (he joined in 1974 and played on the final two Burton Cummings-led Guess Who albums)

But wasn't it in 1974 that Mick went to see Keith Olsen? Oh, that was probaby late '74. It's still an interesting concept where Toiano might have taken things musically. Those two solo albums are very nice stuff. Mercury released them together under the title "The Toronto Sound" in 1999, right before Ian & Sylvia's Movin' On/Lovin' Sound 2 in 1. Maybe the solo albums are a bit more Steely Dan overall than what Mick would have been interested in.

I remeber reading an interview in which he said that he never really practiced much until after he quit the band following TITN and he probably became a better guitarist then.

Here are some that I've heard Lindsey mention:
Scotty Moore
John Stewart
Peter Green
Dave Mason (I'm tellin' ya folks, go buy "Alone Together")
David Gilmour
Yes, Lindsey gained a lot of respect with the masses after "The Dance," although, nothing he did there (i.e. "Big Love") was new to Lindsey fans. It was cool to hear people singing his praises.
Finally: The Guess Who -> Burton Cummings -> Lenny Castro -> Fleetwood Mac.

I think I first appreciated Lindsey's guitar on World Turning but I'm not sure if it was the studio track or possible he was on tv later on... very dim lightbulb hanging over me about this.
