I'm so furious about this rediculousness. Please see Kennedy's letter below.

http://www.tedkennedy.com/RejectTheFMA

[from Ted Kennedy] With sinking polls and the upcoming election staring at them, the Republican leadership in Congress is about to pander to its extremist base again. Afraid of losing their lock on power, the GOP is reviving its effort to write bigotry into our Constitution by passing their so-called Federal Marriage Amendment, which would strip millions of lesbian and gay Americans of a basic human right.

Their political pandering is shameless, desperate, and appallingly predictable, and you and I can stop it.

http://www.tedkennedy.com/RejectTheFMA

The goal of the Republican Federal Marriage Amendment is to repeal civil unions and domestic partnership laws now in place in many states. It would block states and municipalities -- including Massachusetts -- from treating lesbian and gay couples fairly. It would force a policy of bigotry on all of us, and deny states the right to interpret their own constitutions and laws.

Our Constitution is a living document that enables all Americans to live freely in a democratic society. It's not a political device to deny or restrict any one's basic rights. But that's exactly how Republicans -- in the White House and Congress -- are attempting to use it. It's wrong for them to play politics with the Constitution and try to stoke fear and intolerance as a way to preserve their dwindling power.

Please stand with me against this shameful bigotry. Tell the Republican leadership to start dealing with the real issues confronting us, such as national security, the war in Iraq, and urgent domestic issues such as jobs, health care, and education. Tell them you reject their divisive Federal Marriage Amendment. Join me today:

http://www.tedkennedy.com/RejectTheFMA

Until now, the task of regulating marriage has been left where it belongs -- with the states. In fact, a number of states have had intense debates about the issue in recent years. Americans from Alabama, South Carolina, Wisconsin and many other states have grappled with the basic question: why not permit all Americans to have fair treatment under the tax laws, share insurance coverage, and visit their most loved ones in the hospital?

I'm proud that Massachusetts has led the way toward marriage equality. We recognize that being part of a family is a basic right and that government should do all it can to support and promote families.

Marriage is best defined as a shared commitment for the future -- a pledge to share in life's celebrations, burdens, and triumphs. Lesbian and gay couples face the same challenges that all American families face and they deserve our protection and respect.

Together, we can prove to the Republican leadership that we stand united against their effort to divide our country. Their pathetic pandering is no excuse for their lack of leadership.

Join me today, and preserve our Constitution as a document that unites -- not divides.

Say no to the Federal Marriage Amendment:

http://www.tedkennedy.com/RejectTheFMA

Thank you, as always, for your support.

Sincerely,

Senator Edward M. Kennedy

As a 'homosexualist' sympathesizer I'd sign in a minute if I were a U.S. citizen. Anyone remember that moment in history when the 'neo-con' ditto heads coined that term 'homosexualist' and were bandying it about? It was supposed to reflect their 'fact' that gay people were choosing some lifestyle just to annoy everyone else, and I'm sure they would know so much more about these things than homosexual people themselves!

Well, the way my mind works I'd probably sign as Mary-Jo Kopechke, but trust me, when they start building the camps I will be writing some heated letters! In the meanwhile how about sending your 'land of the free' sign up here for safe keeping?

One step forward and two steps back, this kind of dance can never last.

I am not a Bush fan. But I don't believe gay marriage should considered a recognized institution. Should this become a constitution ammendment?- no. Am I a gay hater?-no. But homosexuality is an anomoly(sp) it is not the norm. Gay marriage does allow for equality, recognition, security, etc but there is one very fundemental issue that needs to be understood:

If same sex marriages were the norm- if we all were married to the same sex- our hereditary line would vanish. We could not develop offspring. We as human beings would vanish. Those that favor gay marriage are only looking at the human rights issue. I am pointing out the evolutuonary isse.

I have presented my opinions on this issue before, and received a ton of critcism, as would be expected I'll receive it again.

There are alot of great people in here, gay and srtaight. My intention is not to create anger, but to present an opposing view.

while I agree with most of what you have to say, I have to point out that SEX and MARRIAGE are two different concepts. you can beget children only thru SEX. you might be able go codify "marriage" but you cant change the facts of SEX. it takes male/female to have sex and create offspring, but you can have any type of "marriage" situation you want.....

With all due respect (and I have it for you :wavey: ) - the proposed marriage amendments at the Federal level and the state levels have nothing to do with the continuation of the human species. After all, marriage is a man made institution and nature indicates humans can procreate without it  So, if government sanctioning of marriage of any type ceased to exist, people could still get married and have kids or have them as a single parent. That will never change.

So, the premise of your argument is specious as it pertains to the amendments.

What these amendments are about is promoting one religion over another, which, as an unmarried American who pays the same taxes, does not sit well with me. Sadly, many cannot see it that way. They think that people can just contract into the same rights automatically given to married people and that is just false.

In the end, I wish you could see that it is not about procreation, etc., but the rights given to one group over another.

Put it this way, how would you feel if the tables were turned and you saw all these people getting Federal and State benefits you could not get just because of your religious beliefs. I'd be pissed

Tone is hard to tell from the written word - so here is mine - respectful and educational :wavey:

Exaclty - so why do the Fed. Govt. and the state govts. have to sanction it in any way. Why can't you just marry as many or whatever you want and draw up your own contracts to leave them your property. Also, if I as one male on hundreds of millions do not procreate, there is no harm to society because many others will. I mean women past menopause marry all the time - surely that is not about procreation, but sex and commitment, which they can get through their church. Why does the govt. at any level have to give them rights above others?

I will never get it is about anything other than the promotion of one religion over another. Sadly, people just cannot make that connection. Maybe it is because so many of us come from the norm of a married home?

And - I'll even take it further - if you want to marry eight guys and bang all of them - more power to you. Why do I give a flying fukc if you do that. Yet, the busy bodies cannot abide that. They want everyone to be like them - and "them" is a wide variety of definitions mind you.

Also, many of these very same people I see, follow no other aspect of The Bible. So, why assert this one as the absolute?

France??? "Stinky pits and all baby..."

A few years ago Oklahoma had a statewide vote on defining that marriage is only between a man and a woman.

Of course it passed by a wide margin (In the town we live in, Only 17 people out of 1100 voted against the law-Deb & myself were 2 of the 17...Strangely the lottery law on the same ballot passed  ), But what those who voted in favor of the measure didnt realize by reading the complete law (Which was online because both Deb & myself read it aloud) is that now even if a man and woman, who were living together unmaried for years upon years, is that the state will now not see them as married via "common law". So in a weird way those who oppose the law shot themselve in their own foot and/or asses.

I think gays/lesbians should be allowed to marry...Who says falling in love and wanting to spend a life together is strictly for us heteroes (Probably mispelled that one)???

I know where you stand on this, but I think it's just dandy to "sanction marriage"; I think there's plenty to be said for governments encouraging and yes, even rewarding families for forming and producing the next generation. I mean...it's in the best interest of a society to always have someone around to push around the wheelchairs and pay Social Security and stuff like that. But I also think there are a lot more families that deserve that recognition than are currently getting it.

Until I hear someone say they want to put a law on the books that prosecutes women for not having children, I don't want to hear any more of this "continuation of the species" crap. Some people, gay and straight, don't have kids. Some people, gay and straight, do. You can't legislate on that basis at all IMO based on that whole pesky "freedom" thing..

hmmm the last time I noticed the earth was becoming way overpopulated anyway .If we could decrease human procreation by even 20% or so it would go a long way to protracting the existence of the human race if that is your concern .Our finite resources would last longer .I really can't see everyone deciding to go gay just because gay marriage was legal.Do you really think Bush is pushing the amendment because he is afraid if same sex marriage becomes legal he might feel compelled to dumb Laura and marry Dick Cheney?

And with that logic, couples who choose not to have children also shouldn't marry.

But I also think there are a lot more families that deserve that recognition than are currently getting it . . . .

I do not necessarily disagree with the sanctioning of marriage. However, I think it should be all versions of it, and that is waaaaayyyy too radical for most people  But, I agree with ya in spirit!!!!!

That's all...I understand that point. But it's impossible, and that is one of the many reasons why I love diversity.

I'm also not seeing the relevance your point has to our society. We're talking about a hypothetical situation concerning the beginning of life on this planet. What does that have to do with an FMA in 2006?

Also, do you really think that some (if not many) of those robins wouldn't reproduce? You're not addressing what others have said so far in this thread--that gay people have children just as straight people do.

True - no one is agruing against that. In fact, I think everyone agrees with that. I think the thing people are saying is that is an example not based in reality because the reality is straight people, gay people, non reproductive straight people, reproductive gay people, etc.. all are on this planet. So, there is going to be reproduction no matter if the automatic govt. sanctioned benefots are made available to all. So, the no reproduction point is a red herring in this argument.

This opinion was presented very politely. The facts are gay couples are having children, their own and adopted. In a theoretical world on paper someplace maybe they don't, but in the real world they are having kids in all sorts of ways involving surrogacy. They are reproducing and they are commiting so let's just call it exactly what it is, a same-sex marriage, and do these people the incredibly kind and benevolent favor and bestow upon them the same language we use for everyone else, and to distiguish between marriages add same-sex in front if it makes you feel better.

I am a hetero Christian, albeit from the terrorist seive to the north (according to former Torontonian CNN news dude John Roberts), and I selfishly would like to see our species make this progressive move within my lifetime. I was engaged to a man in the U.S. and lived there for long periods. Sadly we were unable to marry for huge financial reasons once he was diagnosed with inoperable cancer, thanks to the negatives we would have faced in terms of medical coverage for both of us. Sometimes I wonder just why gay people want to get married, but I wish them the freedom to experience the negatives and benefits to the status denied to me and the man who loved me. He passed away early into this year and while I say in my heart we were married before God and everybody, I do know the pain of being denied the ability to marry and I would not wish it on others.

I hope it was okay to share this and how more than ever it is important to me that people who want to marry be able to do so. I hope people can remain respectful. I was shocked to hear of anti-gay protesters showing up at funerals of soldiers who died in Iraq to protest some alleged support of homosexuality within the military. That was extremely disrespectful as were the signs I saw.

That doesn't even make sense. Your point makes the assumption that if gay marriage is made legal, the entire world is suddenly going to turn gay. Trust me, heterosexual people are not going to stop having sex and making babies just because gay marriage is made legal.

Yes. Thank you. My. Goodness.

Wait, are you sure everyone isn't just waiting till the gov't says it's okay to start boinking people of their own sex? Maybe that is just what everyone has been waiting for. You know. Once the gov't gives the go ahead, every single person in the U.S. can breathe a big sigh of relief, quit with the hetero thing and the raising children thing, and finally
shack up with their "best friend" from college. And when they do that, sperm and eggs will cease to exist (somehow), thus rendering the entire population unable to reproduce!!! No more children, ever! That will be pretty dire, as there are only 6 billion people on the planet. What will we do? And where did all the sperm and eggs go? :distress:
You know, I'm suprised we even have any people here at all, since there have been gay people from the dawn of time. How did we all get here, do you think? Xenu? Magical animation of molded clay figures? It's pretty mysterious. I should probably rethink this whole "equal rights for all people" thing. I wouldn't want my beliefs to contribute the cessation of our entire species. That would suck.

biologically speaking, homosexuality is not the norm. however, the role of our government (at least as it has established in the past) is not to promote and endorse norms, it is to promote and endorse equality, and as long as marriage is an institution bestowed upon heterosexual people only, the government is not doing its job.

nobody can refute your argument that if everyone were gay, our heredity line would vanish. that's obvious. but as others have pointed out, people were procreating long before the institution of marriage ever came into existence, and people are procreating now outside of marriage.

the importance of marriage is in the rights and benefits that come with marriage, and by denying gay people these rights, our lawmakers are essentially making bigotry policy.

Thank goodness. I know the debate is heated at times, and I know it's contraversial. But I cannot BELIEVE that in this day and age, they were trying to pass a law AGAINST gay people getting married.

Hello!!!! We're at war & our soldiers are dying every single day in a foreign country. We have too many people homeless. So many people work their asses off full time and still are living in poverty. Murderers go to jail for 5 years, but people in possession of pot can go for 20 or 30.

All of these issues need to be addressed & fixed, yet our president, in his infinite wisdom (   ), wants to stop all the big bad scary homos from marrying eachother? THAT'S his priority right now?

WTF?!?! I mean, really. What. The. F uck.

Yes. Thank you. My.

Just figured I'd laugh at my own post since that guy has me on ignore. No reason to be subtle now! :woohoo: :woohoo:

Except if you think of it in the context that they'll do anything to grab power and money. So ask, "How can this get them power and/or money?" and you'll probably have the answer. Or how do they think it will.

Not only that - but think of the million or so dollars wasted on this tripe that they KNOW will not pass - all in an attempt to cover W's pathetic record and entice the base to vote in the upcoming elections. I mean I get that the base pretty much will never vote for a D, but if they do not vote at all, then the D's stand a better shot of winning because the R's will lose needed votes.

If same sex marriages were the norm- if we all were married to the same sex- our hereditary line would vanish. We could not develop offspring. We as human beings would vanish. Those that favor gay marriage are only looking at the human rights issue. I am pointing out the evolutuonary isse.

.

Actually the male would disappear. You can splice 2 female eggs to produce an offspring, but it always results in a female. So the species would continue.

No argument there. But can we try to address the matter at hand? Many people responded to your argument quite rationally and intelligently...Carrie and Tiffany, to name a couple. Are you planning on continuing the debate for the sake of the argument you deem so valid? Or did you never actually believe in it and the whole purpose of posting it was to see how many people would rush to respond?

I don't wish to continue this at all. Everyone has made their point. I don't agree, however, that "stirring the sh.." equals trolling. As I said, there are other people here who post provocative ideas, goading remarks and thoughts, etc, which to me is an obvious effort to get reactions from the rest of us. This to me = "stirring the sh.." therefore this too is trolling?

You have a differing opinion. That's fine. All anyone has asked for is clarification as to how you get from some "evolutionary fact" to an opinion on how the government should act. Even with Hilary finally just simply asking you to address the point. I guess people assume you want to or are willing discuss something when you post on a board like this.

But you haven't. Instead you're spending a whole lot more time discussing the people on this board than the subject at hand. That is usually a red flag to me that someone's just looking to start a little trouble.

Are you basically admitting to trying to goad a reaction out of people? Go ahead. I'm just not interested in that crap. You want to discuss the matter at hand, great. But all this D-R-A-M-A...just not my thing. Been there, done that. And this has nothing to do with me being a moderator, just me being a poster on this board.
