NEW YORK -- Years after she first emerged from the Batcave, Batwoman is coming out of the closet.

DC Comics is resurrecting the classic comic book character as a lesbian, unveiling the new Batwoman in July as part of an ongoing weekly series that began this year. The 5-foot-10 superhero has flowing hair, knee-high red boots with spiked heels, and a form-fitting black outfit.
"We wanted to make her a more unique personality than others in the Bat-family," said Dan DiDio, vice president and executive editor at DC.
The original Batwoman was started in 1956 and killed off in 1979. The new character will share the same name as her original alter ego, Kathy Kane, and arrives with ties to others in the Gotham City world.
"She's a socialite from Gotham high society," DiDio said. "She has some past connection with Bruce Wayne. And she's also had a past love affair with one of our lead characters, Renee Montoya."

why is everyone so shocked? I think I've heard about this every hour on the hour on every news station/channel imaginable.

that'd be like Robin finally being officially announced as a Streisand-ticket holding friend of Dorothy.

Well I'm no shocked per se - just thought it was an interesting tidbit.

And I think they comic hasn't been around for a while, right? So I think there's some newsworthiness in taking a high profile character and competely outing them :shrug:

I wasn't directing the "everyone" to you or anyone in particular, just a generalization. hope it come across as bitchy. :p

and you're right about it being noteworthy, but it's just saturated the news here...at least.

Nah - I only saw it once - then after I posted it - it's been all over the news lol...and I haven't watched the new for two days (been out of the office) - so it was news to me lol....

I can totally understand the oversaturation factor though

I can't believe how much press it's gotten, sheesh. It's great that they're bringing Batwoman back [since DC destroyed my favourite Bat-character, Batgirl], but's lame that all the focus is on the fact that the new is a lesbian.

Ok - you make a good point...but then again, she IS the first main-stream lesbian/gay character, right? Correct me if I'm wrong - I don't know much about comics :D

The reason why this is generating such a big buzz is because in mainstream comics (Marvel/DC) there are almost ZERO gay people.

Occasionally, a peripheral character will be gay- with them usually dying or getting beat up- but, otherwise forget it. At this point, there are only THREE officially gay characters in the Marvel universe and zippo at DC:

Northstar (gay French Canadian mutant)
Wiccan and Hulkling from the New Avengers

Anybody know of any others??? Kneel hardly posts here anymore. Brian, you're a comic book nerd- any one else??? Bueller???? :laugh:

Yes, I suppose it is because she's the first gay character in a major comic. But hey, Kate Spencer [Manhunter] is a divorced single mom who has no qualms about killing the bad guys! Where's her parade? Oh wait, it was canceled. :p

They destroyed Batgirl? What happened to her? I did not follow that. But I was Batgirl last year for Halloween and it was fun.

Ah Xena.

Here's what I know. Xena was not gay - in the beginning of the series, but she and Gabrielle, her faithful sidekick, had this very playful very close friendship. By season 2 the show had garnered a big lesbian following, and the subtexts were always being discussed, and the show started really playing to them....

I only watched season2 - and in it Xena talks of a lost love (male) - in another season Gabby gets married and has a baby...in all, no I don't think Xena was gay. But perhaps someone who knows more than I can answer more definitively.

Heh, great costume! That's previous Batgirl, Barbara Gordon.

The current Batgirl, Cassandra Cain was pretty much destroyed. She's basically gone crazy, killed her "siblings" and taken over the League of Assassins. Will she ever get her marbles back? Stay tuned for the next issue of Robin! Dunh dunh duuuunh!
