For the nitpickers:

1 - I know that pretty much all food could be considered "ethnic." But you know what I mean. I also know that "Chinese" food here in the U.S. is really not true Chinese food, it's been Americanized, same with Mexican - but again - you know what I mean.

2 - Yes, yes I do like to start threads about food. :p I love to eat. It's a damned miracle that I'm not more overweight.

Japanese food: I've yet to be disappointed. It's so light, and refreshing, yet extremely filling. I first tried sushi (maki - that's the roles, right?) 3 years ago & I've eaten it a couple times a month ever since. I finally tried nagiri (sp) sushi a few weeks ago- the slice of raw fish on top of the rice ball - and I didn't die. It was actually pretty good. Teriyaki chicken is great too, for those less adventurous.

Indian Food: I first had Indian food about 8 years ago at my old job - the doctor I worked with cooked us a feast one day so we could all try Indian food. Oh. My. God. Chicken curry, dal, potatoes & spinach, rice, naan bread, bread stuffed with cauliflower, everything so spicy, yet not "hot." I was in heaven. She asked me what I wanted for my farewell lunch when I quit - I picked her feast.

Italian: Who doesn't like Italian food? (Actually, isn't there someone on this board who said they don't?) Granted, my fam is not Italian, so most of what I've had has been from local restaurants (NOT Olive Garden, jerks! :p ) I'm a sucker for any sort of pasta with shellfish in sauce. I prefer red sauce to white (too rich) but olive oil & garlic will do just fine. Vodka sauce is kickass too.

Thai: Pad Thai is like the Lo Mein of Thai food, so I like it but it's nothing special. Paw Kee Mao is excellent, very spicy - flat square noodles in a stew with shrimp, chicken, peppers, onions...YUM! And anything cooked panang (in coconut milk & spices) is delicious.

Japanese, Ethiopian. Thai is okay. Mexican doesn't count as an ethnic food, but it's my favorite food of all foods. I wouldn't call Italian food an ethnic food, either, but you can if you want.

HEY! Nitpicker! Didn't you read my disclaimer about what is really ethnic?

I had Ethiopian food once. Interesting. I liked the big pancake thing we scraped our food up with. There are NO Ethiopian restaurants in Buffalo, though, so I won't be having at again anytime soon.

I did not read your disclaimer. But it just seems like Italian food is so old here, that it's just food. I dunno. Carry on.

What about fast food? Are hamburgers German?

Definitely Ethiopian, but I always need more injera (sp?)/pancake.

Indian, but I always need more naan.

Vietnamese, crispy fried rolls, pronounced something like "Chai Yo"

My fave ethnic food is probably either Indian or Middle Eastern--they are similar in some ways and very different on others. Anyway I could either every night!

Greek food is also good. That's definitely a close second. Yum!

I knew we were going to get into this! I was going to post a whole long thing, then didn't. Yes, Polish food is ethnic, so is Russian. Most things that didn't originate in the U.S., I would consider ethnic. I don't know if Elie would consider "American" food as ethnic, though. I'm confusing myself here....

And no, fast food isn't ethnic. Unless you count the Chinese buffet. ;) I mean, I wouldn't consider Taco Bell or Don Pablo's authentic Mexican food.

But, what I mean is, when you say "let's go out for Italian tonight" or "I'm really in the mood for Thai food."

Me neither, especially living in Austin. There's Tex-mex and there's authentic Mexican. I'm a fan of the former. Austin has some fabulous locally owned Tex-mex eateries. Man, this thread is making my stomach growl!

Hamburgers? Is it because they were invented in America? (if that is true). I say "I'm in the mood for Hamburgers!" all the time!
;)
Okay, so anything not invented in the U.S. ...You know, Romy says real Italians don't eat the same thing we think is Italian food. So, I guess it was invented here. Ah-HA!

Ethnic just means any ethnicity, as far as I can tell. I think people have long used it to describe "non white", but maybe when the Irish first came they were ethnic, too? I better go to dictionary.com rigth now...

Yeah, I think this is correct. Irish are considered ethnic, so are other people from other European countries. It's hard to think of the Brits as "ethnic" though

But yeah, are white Americans considered ethnic in other countries? Hmmm, interesting...

According to this, it can be pretty much any ethnic group. However, the third definition does say "non christian or jewish, heathen".

Of or relating to a sizable group of people sharing a common and distinctive racial, national, religious, linguistic, or cultural heritage.
Being a member of a particular ethnic group, especially belonging to a national group by heritage or culture but residing outside its national boundaries: ethnic Hungarians living in northern Serbia.

Of, relating to, or distinctive of members of such a group: ethnic restaurants; ethnic art.

Relating to a people not Christian or Jewish; heathen.

n.
A member of a particular ethnic group, especially one who maintains the language or customs of the group.

I like just about ALL foods..."ethnic" depends on your point of view. Being from SoCal, Mexican food isn't considered "ethnic". But, if I were in Michigan, it probably would be.

I really liked Ukranian food when I was in a Ukranian section of southeastern British Columbia (& eastern Alberta) a quarter of a century ago...although my cholesterol levels couldn't handle eating too much of that food these days.

I really like the Indian/Pakistani food I have had...I haven't delved deep into the cuisine as much as I would like.

I like Greek food, too...gyros, souvlaki, patitsio, etc.

As Olive Garden isn't authentic Italian, the El Torito & Acapulco restaurant chains aren't authentic Mexican food, either.

But yeah, are white Americans considered ethnic in other countries? Hmmm, interesting...

"White Americans" are ancestors of people who CAME from other countries. When it is all said & done, the "American Caucasian" is not indigenous to the North American continent...they're ALL from European descent.

No, Amber, "hamburgers" are NOT German. There IS a German "Hamburg"-style steak which IS a ground steak patty...but it is not served between a bun with ketchup, mayo & lettuce. Hamburgers are an American invention; as are hot dogs, chop suey & pizza (the pizzas as we know them today, that is)

You've never had a regular McDonald's or Burger King burger? Both come standard with ketchup (mustard, onions & pickles).

I substitute ketchup for the yucky raw tomato slice I fling away like a frisbee.

And, yeah, I also sometimes like teryaki sauce and a grilled pineapple ring on a burger, too. And, others, sauteed mushrooms and Swiss cheese. BBQ sauce is another of my fave options, too. I really like burgers of all types...just leave off the pickle, tomato & raw onions...grilled onions are ok, though.

aaaactually Mexican Food can be pretty darn authentic if you know where to go - and some of the best Mexican food ever can be found in Southern New Mexico and West Texas. California doesn't even do it up right...seriously. I'm partial to Mexican Food.

Sadly - outside of that and Chinese food - I've spent my life being so picky that I've never had much by way of ethnic food :\

I would go with three of your four, Paula, & substitute either Greek or Vietnamese for Thai. While I enjoy the flavors of Thai, the heat in the food just isn't good for my esophagitis & hiatal hernia.

So swap it out for Greek/Mediterranean or Vietnamese.

It's a hot dog on a bun, topped with this hideous sauce (similar to a chili dog, but not a chili dog.) I don't even know what's in the sauce, it's brownish red, I think there's ground beef in there. The '83 show was at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium ("The Aud.") The '78 show was at the then 5 year old War Memorial Stadium (home of the Bills - then it was Rich Stadium, now it's Ralph Wilson Stadium.)

I must have had a blessed childhood because whenever I encounter people who eat virtually nothing except the squarest heartland food--people who seem afraid of anything else--I am just amazed & flummoxed. In my household, we ate (& still eat) an incredible variety of ethnic & homegrown foodstuffs, including those from Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Russia, Greece, Turkey, Spain, Morocco, France, Germany, Italy, Britain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, India, Pakistan, Argentina, Brazil, the Caribbean, Hawaii & Polynesia, not to mention all over the U.S.

Why so fussy about so much food? have you tried anything novel or different? why so afraid to do so? You might actually like a little here, a little there. Next time you saunter past a Greek bistro, step in & order a shish-kebob of lemon-marinaded chicken or lamb, or when you drive past a Vietnamese cafe, pull in & try a Vietnamese roll of chicken & cilantro wrapped in rice paper.

You won't die. Just keep repeating to yourself, "I won't die. I won't die."

1000 points for using the word "flummoxed." We should really try to use that word more, it's neat.

I know for me, at first, it wasn't fear of "dying," it was not wanting to spend money on something I wasn't sure I'd like. Being on a budget, it really pisses me off when I try something new & hate it, I feel like I've wasted my money.

A bunch of us at work started a little dinner club, where we'd go out to a different place every month, almost always "ethnic". That way, we got to share things & find out what we liked. It was great until we realized that none of us could stand one of the "members" and we had no way of getting rid of her. So it's petered out as of late.

So are you moving to Colorado or something? You need to get out of Rochester--sounds like they have **** for food  :xoxo:. One good thing about that though is that you're forced to eat at home so you don't have to worry about going out to eat and putting on a lot of weight . I know it's hard to move from a place that has fabulous eateries to a place that, well, doesn't. I hate to think about ever having to move away from Austin for that very reason!

I know...but sadly eating at home hasn't helped me in the weight department...because of the winter's I'm not used to and the fact that I eat horribly I've gained 30 pounds since moving here :distress: I'm just sick about it - but know it's my fault - and I know what I did to get here - so now I'm starting to creat better habits.

THat will not be helped by the fact that I'm moving back to the west (yes, I'm moving to Colorado) where they have all the familiar things I love, Dairy Queen, Village Inn, Sonic, Chik-Fil-A.

There's no Dairy Queens in Roch? Really? There's a ton here - mostly just ice cream, but there are a few that serve food too. Sadly, no White Caslte, Sonic or Chik-Fil-A. :distress:

Did you mean there are now MT's there, or there are no MT's there? Either way, you'd probably hate it, it's definitely fast food (although I hate Taco Bell & Love MT.)

Never been to Timmy Ho's? Heathen! The donuts are OK, the muffins are good, the soup & sandwich combos are really good. I'm not big on coffee, but their English toffee cappucino is to die for, and so are their frozen cappuccinos.

I think you still get the best tacos (usually soft are more authentic) from those little holes-in-the-walls taquerias that dot the landscape. Of course, you have to be careful about which ones you eat at.

There's a little taqueria here run by a mom & pop from Mexico. It's very clean & cheap, too. Mama takes your money & papa prepares your food to order. Great horchata, too! There's no better thirst quencher than horchata over ice with nutmeg sprinkled atop.

Those are the ones I almost always eat at because there are about 3-5 good ones very close to my house. They are so cheap, too, and always have really good salsa fresca. I definitely prefer them. The burritos weigh about 4 pounds and cost 5 dollars. Or you can get the 2 pounder for 3 dollars...

But you southwesterners & Texans are so persnickety with your Mexican food. You guys think you're the only ones in the States who understand real Mexican food! You guys seem to forget that California was Mexican before it was American!

I'd make a bad Mexican food maven because it just isn't my favorite cuisine. It's essentially a peasant's food (although so is what we think of as Greek food & Turkish food & Mideastern food & so many other cuisines), & it has a certain "thrown-together" quality, what with the beans & the rice & the back end of the bull. My favorite Mexican restaurants have that high Spanish, or Castilian, touch--that ranchero flavor from the Old World.

but even that, ehh ... it's good every once in a while. But give me big slabs of quivering sashimi any day & every day over that.

In Kenya my favorites were:

Samosas: dough filled with seasoned meat - usually lamb.

Mandazis: fried dough served with tea, their tea is full-bodied and fantastic. They also season their tea with masala, a mixture of ginger, cinamon, cloves, black pepper and a couple of other spices.

Their curry is excellent.

Chipate: flatbread just like Indian nan. They fold their curry/stew/whatever in a piece of the bread. Mmmm... to die for.

Yes, they are deep fried I believe. Yes, they really are so good! Kenyans practically live on lamb. Other meats as well. Twice my Kenyan friends had bags of meat they were eating from. It's too much. I once asked George "what's in the bag" and he sheepishly answered "meat". It was too funny. I've seen a Pizzeria Regina somewhere in 'the City', just cant remember where at.

Another restaurant we like, that may be considered 'ethnic food' is the Blue Corn Cafe (Southwestern/Native American food).

PR is from the North End here in Mass, good stuff. Blue Corn Cafe reminds me of my mixup with Stevie's "Storms". I thought the line was "Never have I been a blue corn seed, I have always..." Oh that's rich.

Sounds interesting. What do they serve as Native American dishes?

Off the top of my head, and only guessing, I'd say:

Buffalo Burgers w/black beans & corn...with a side of peyote buttons

BTW - anyone ever had Buffalo meat? It's delish. Very similar to steak, but I thought it was more tender & flavorful.

some kinda dish that was like a tamale w/cabbage & beef. Definitely no burgers on the menu.

As for buffalo burgers, those are too easily available in this area, Since most people here tend to raise buffalo/bison instead of cattle (There's a herd of buffalo in a pasture behind the high school which is 1/4th mile to my South).
