Hey all...
I'm in the market for a new digital camera (after my old one bit the dust, er concrete, on my trip to Tennessee) and would really like to get one that is high quality but not too expensive - I don't want to spend more than $300 on it. I haven't a clue which brand or model to get, though.
Suggestions?

I broke down and bought my first one last week. I got a 5MP Vivitar for $100, only to get home and realize it wasn't compatible with Windows 98(CONTRARY to what the clerk told me), so I went back and returned it for a Kodak Easyshare C530, 5MP, for $128. I didn't want to go any less than 5MP.
I've found nothing I don't like about it yet. And, of course, if you go with a cheaper one, it doesn't hurt quite as bad when you drop it on concrete!

I like my Kodak, it's easy to use. Plus, when I dropped it on concrete, the only damage was a ding in the LCD screen. Still works like a charm.

how weird, i dropped mine on some rocks and broke it a couple weeks ago, and i just got my replacement today. i decided to go for an ultra-compact panasonic fx01 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EIZ6WK/103-1536077-3549427?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=502394). it's 6 mp with 3.6 optical zoom, and it was right around the $300 mark. i really like it, and dpreview.com gave it a good review (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfx01/).
good luck, and let us know what you pick!

I've got a Canon A520 and I absolutely love it! Between the sale price and the rebate, I spent $159.00.

I've never owned one, but from what I've heard, it's alot easier to avoid security at concerts with digital cameras.

In the $300 range, you should be able to get a decent camera. We own a Kodak CX7530 w/ approx. 5MP. It's one of the best cameras I've owned!! Bought it a couple yrs. ago- not sure if the model is still avail. The manufacturers change models constently.

See, what's the difference in your $300 Kodak(5MP), and my $128 Kodak(5MP)?
Just the zoom(mine's 5x digital zoom)? Or the two years difference in purchase time?

i would guess it's just the 2 yrs. difference ... if you check out this (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=kodak_v530%2Ckodak_cx7530&show=all) comparison, there isn't that much difference between the two cameras.

I have a Canon PowerShot (point and shoot) I bought a few years ago in that price range. They're probably still around the same price. The thing I like about it is that it's very easy to conceal because it's smaller than most bars of soap. It takes 3 minute movies too. During the SYW tours, someone over on Mick's board was using one and posting some great concert photos. I haven't had the opportunity to get up close in an indoor concert situation with mine, yet. That is the hardest environment to shoot in, MHO.

Here is a link to CNET that gives the details on just about every digital camera out there. Hope that this helps.
