View Full Version : Almost ten years since The Dance.....

And I just watched it tonight and I'm all verklempt.
People don't realize just how long ten years really is. I look back on these performances that comprised the concert and I realize how Stevie was really at the top of her game. Christine really, really looks bored. Lindsey seems upbeat- however, his presence was much more aged than the five years that had elapsed between this performance and his look/feel/voice from Out of the Cradle.
The Highlights for Me:
"Gold Dust Woman"- the "And go hoooommmmee" is the best ever in my opinion. If she sang like that today, I'd plotz.
"Silver Springs"- it was all great- beyond description. The ending still draws tears to my eyes. The fact that Stevie truly pulled off this vocal is just amazing.
"Big Love"- who knew something from that dated album would survive to be this great? Lindsey is such a fukcing talent it is beyond belief.
"Landslide"- "This is for you, Daddy...." Jeezus, woman. That whole deal just kills me. When she lifts her chiffon covered hands to her face after the kiss at the end, I thought I would die. I remember the very first time I saw this and I was absolutely bawling.
"Bleed to Love Her"- holyyyyyyyy macaroni!! Such a gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous, fukcing fantastic song! Beauty personified.
Sadly, Christine's ennui throughout this entire deal was just a big ole bucket of ice water on me. Believe, I love the woman, but you could really tell her heart wasn't in it. Too bad. I mean, compare her botox-no-emotion face to her "YEAH" face from "Sisters of the Moon" from the Mirage video.
I liked all three of the "new" songs. Even "My Little Demon"- kinda.
It seems really strange to me that this was almost ten years ago.
I feel old.

Concur on all songs.
It really seems like it just happened.
I'd also like to add Rhiannon, it was basically the first time I'd ever heard the big ol' "dreams unwind" ending, and I got (and get) chills on that song. It's very sexy. I was mesmerized.
I really like Temporary One as well. A great new offering from Chris, IMO. It's just pretty and full and it rollicks along. I can't help but sing, and I can't help but be happier after it plays. I also find all the very even rhythms and harmonies together intriguing. When you look, there's so much more than you first thought there was.
:wavey:
Yeah, I like it all. I could say something lovely about every song.
I remember repeating and repeating and repeating the end of Silver Springs. I swear I didn't listen to another album for two years. I was ecstatic.

It hasn't even been 9 years yet! Not to nitpick, but when you get to a certain age, you don't want to add years before their time. It was an excellent time for Fleetwood Mac though. So much excitement. I remember Stevie did a few special concerts the year before. I saw her at the benefit concert in Ohio. I remember thinking how great she sounded and looked compared to the last time I had seen her, and wondered if all special concerts she was doing were, in a way, to warm up for a Fleetwood Mac reunion. Turned out it probably was!
It was especially exciting for me because it was the first time I got to see Lindsey perform live as part of FM. My first concert was during Tango in '87.
Seeing the show in Atlantic City where Lindsey had to finish "Silver Springs" for Stevie was pretty cool too!

The GDW HOOOOMMEEEE AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHWWHSHFHHFIIFIOAhhhhhhh - then the sort of collapse afterward was one of the highlights of all my years (since like 75) of FM and Stevie. She owned that stage at that point.
SS - I sobbed at the end. I was terrified for her at the beginning because I was scared she could not pull the vocal off, esp. when CM started that high. What a fukcing woman is all I can say. To this day it gives me chills.
I think the coolest group song was My Little Demon - they looked like they were having so much fun - though the song is just OK IMO.
My have CM song was Over My Head - she was just sublime in that for me.
That concert in Atlanta and that time was just such a happy period.

I know. Why is it that the passage of time makes us feel sad?
These last ten years have just flown by. "I've run through rainbows and castles of candy..."
When The Dance came out, I grooved on Bleed To Love Her for a good long time. It's a great song. I love it.
The Dance really was a high point in Stevie's career. That mystical, magical thing that makes us all love Fleetwood Mac was there in spades.

. . . The Dance really was a high point in Stevie's career. That mystical, magical thing that makes us all love Fleetwood Mac was there in spades.
I have to agree. She was in many ways the dark horse of that set. Her problems had been the most public. Moreover, as the "star" of FM (at least poplularity wise  - and no slam on LB or CM ) - she had fallen the most. So, when she emerged slim, in splendid voice, and with an aura around her - then she slayed those songs - it was like she's back and most people love a comeback kid.
As she said - it was as magic as you can get on stage! - and it took all five to make it happen

It was 1997. Almost NINE years. A very special year to me, btw.
MY highlights:
S.Springs, oh remember that look between S&L?? Of course later when they repeated the scene during the tour it wasn't big deal, just emotive, but that first one was really thrilling!!
Songbird, Don't Stop and YMLF. Though Chris wasn't that emotional (yes, her heart seemded stayed in England), those performances ruled.
BTLHer. Love the song. As the acoustic version of Big Love was amazing (though after 9 years I miss the original version. Play it live, Lindsey!
I didn't like T.One nor MLDemon.

Holy ****, nearly ten years ago...And I remember thinking in 1995 that the band would never resurface. Who would've predicted then that we'd get "Say You Will" and "In the Meantime"?
I hear a lot of people say Chris looked bored. Maybe. I read her reserve during the proceedings as nerves. She knew she was being recorded and wanted to make the right moves...her performances later in "The Dance" tour were rather spirited. (Thinking of Buffalo, NY in particular). She seemed to loosen up.
As much as I was happy to get "The Dance" I remember being really annoyed that the recording only featured four new songs. We'd waited over a decade for these five to reunite. How about a whole new set list? And in some cases ("Over My Head," "Go Your Own Way," and "Rhiannon") the new live versions were significantly less exciting than their counterparts in earlier live shows.
That said, I thought the new version of "Silver Springs" was a revelation. "You Make Loving Fun" was outstanding, and Lindsey's "Big Love" redeux quite powerful. The new songs were solid, energetic. Everyone sounded great.
So, for me, The Dance was a mixed bag. But one I wouldn't want to be without.

i agree about TO and MLD. the chorus to TO just seemed as if chris took as many water-related metaphors she could think of and threw them together:
the river goes on and on
and the sea that divides us is a
temporary one, and the
bridge will bring us back together.
i like the melody a lot, though, so i still listen to it. i usually skip MLD, though.

there's nothing I can add to your post...you're dead on. The Dance was the first time I had ever seen Stevie/FM and the first time I had ever heard them (that I know of) and it was magic through the television screen. I didn't know this was a comeback for Stevie or anyone so imagine how my jaw hit the floor when I finally heard the Live album and all those 70s boots. sheesh...there's something to be said for the time when you first start collecting this kind of music. if I could, I'd do it all over again
I agree with others that Christine just looked bored. No expressions really. Everyone else seemed energized, excited, but she just looked ehhh. I did love Temporary One, but as is most often the case with me and Christine's songs, they are easily disposable...they don't touch me...great music, but not something I feel.

I think a lot of CM's demeanor is she is self-professed to eschew the limelight and identifies more with John and Mick in the rythm section. That being said, I thought she, for being behind the keyboard for 98% of it, looked inspired. She was smiling a bunch and I LOVE that one where she is rocking back and forth while jamming. I also thought the DS performace was magnificent.
Interestingly, I also think it is her British nature (she really would have made a fabulous BBC inerviewer and she should do the Graham Norton show:laugh: ) to be more reserved than the crazy woman in 10 pounds of black chiffon running around, in a glorious way mind you, like a decapitated chicken and LB's guitarbation
In the end, they all play off of each other and that is why it works. I know most don't, but I consider them FM songs when all five are playing them regardless of who is singing lead.

I also thought the DS performace was magnificent. One measures Christine's commitment by how pocket-solid her keyboard licks & singing are. In that light, Chris was unbeatable for The Dance, especially on You Make Loving Fun, which was the finest singing & instrument-playing of the night(s). Of course, the other side to this argument is that Chris, by that point, was such a pro that she could easily have covered up boredom with perfect singing & playing. But why get locked in an endlessly circular metaphysical argument while you're watching The Dance?

Back then I thought there was way more poignancy and sentimentalism between Stevie and Lindsey in that SS performance and now knowing what I know about "the act" they put on for the fans, it looks like it was mostly an act .

It's definitely Christine's cool, English reserve. I think she brought a touch of elegance & some much needed class to the whole thing. You can't compare her Dance demeanor to the Mirage video. She was 15 years younger then & not in the best shape physically back in 1982. I thought she looked & sounded fantastic in 1997! They all looked pretty darned good considering their ages & not having done anything together in such a long time.
My highlights:
1. You Make Loving Fun-the best live version I think I've ever heard of the song(I love the look that Mick gave Chris right after they finished.)
2. Songbird
3. Silver Springs-terrific live version, although not as good as the original studio version 20 years earlier
4. Don't Stop & Tusk-I love the USC marching band on these 2 songs
5. I think Bleed To Love Her & Temporary One were the best of the new songs.

I remember repeating and repeating and repeating the end of Silver Springs.
I do this ALL the time with both "Silver Springs" and "Gold Dust Woman". It drives Geoffrey freeeeking nuts. I've always wondered to myself, "Am I the only person who does the rewind-30 seconds-over-and-over thing"? It's good to know that I'm not the only Freek out there. It's totally like a drug- like those lab rat experiments where they set up the heroin drip and watch the rat hit it over and over and over and over and over.....
Ummmm...there were four:
For some reason, my brain always forgets that "Bleed to Love Her" was new at that point. It would have fit perfectly on the Rumours album.
I got chills just reading this. Haven't watched The Dance in a while....gonna do it today. :)
My favorite part is the Lindsey vocal all the end/vamp. I just want it to go on forever.
I always try to freeze frame at that exact point where her eyes snap/flash open at the end of that moment and I can never get it quite right. The look on her face was almost as if she didn't believe what she had just sung.
Another cool part of that performance is right after that point when Mick and John are so grooving on that vamp and just before Stevie walks up to the mic to sing, she turns to the left and seems to be pointing at Sharona like, "this is it".
Stevie is so cool.
It was 1997. Almost NINE years. A very special year to me, btw.
Okay all you nitpickers. Wasn't the concert recorded in 04/97?? That would make it now nine years old and it will ten years next year. That's why I said almost ten years- not at ten years.

I loved Chris on GYOW. During Lindsey's solo toward the end she was totally rocking out on the keyboard and the look on her face was like, "yeah, we are BAD ASS aren't we?" Everyone was just kind of locked in the groove, they were all on the same page and it was magnificent.
I'm also a fan of Temporary One. I'm really surprised that more people don't like this song. It's a rollicking, fun song and I welcome anything uptempo from Chris. It seems like she likes to stay in the slow to mid-tempo range quite a lot of the time so when she wants to rock out I welcome it.
Edit: Oh and Tower, another great moment from Gold Dust Woman, for me, is when Stevie shouts "Oooooh pale, SHADOOOOOOOOW SHE'S A DRAGON!" at the end of the song. It's one of my favorite all-time vocal moments from any live or studio Stevie performance. Her vocal is so powerful and strong throughout the whole song, it's like she's a damn fortress or something, just f*cking rock solid!

 Ah yes, all the beautiful Dance moments. When I start to think about one, about 10 more pop into my head. It's like a "chain" reaction. I was thinking about SS and then I read a post about Temporary One and then I started to think about Chris, and then Stevie popped back into my head and then I read Tower's Gold Dust Woman post and then I started thinking about Stevie's fabulousness on that song and then Lindsey popped up . It's like a flood of jumbled up performance memories but incredibly enough, I can still pick out perfect isolated instances within those performances. It's kinda like a dream. I love The Dance.

yeah well ... i'm telling cyndi you, uh ... i'm too sleepy to be funny right now :P
If it makes anyone feel better (probably not), I was 9 (I'm 18 now...I guess y'all can count) when The Dance came out. Of course, I had no idea who the band was at the time and didn't for a while. I do remember our local news morning show giving away a copy.
I first experienced The Dance soon after joining this board at the beginning of my journey to becoming the Fleetwood Mac nerd that I am today. The first time I watched it, I was completely blown away. Of course, it was my first experience with any kind of FM live material. I stayed up late watching the whole thing.
The next day when I wanted to watch it again, my DVD player died. I had to go like a week wanting desperately to watch it again.
Anyways...highlights for me.
The Chain: There's just something magical about them singing that song after all that time. In the end, the chain kept them together. The solo with the sweeping camera and Stevie going crazy on her tamborine gets to me every time.
Everywhere: It's a nice clean version free of the TITN '87 sound (not that there's anything wrong with that). The harmonies and the guitar work are great.
I'm So Afraid: As a new fan, I was ready to **** myself.
Bleed To Love Her: Beautiful. I prefer this version to the SYW one. It seems to have more passion...probably because it's live.
Gypsy: No one has really mentioned this song in the thread, but I really like this version. Probably it has more personal meaning for me. It was the first time I had really listened to the song and understood it. It just hit me like a speeding train and I wanted to cry. I was going through some ****.
Big Love/Go Insane: Again, as a new fan...****ting myself.
Landslide: The "kiss"(????)
Say You Love Me: I love the howdown style. I was basically inspired to learn bass because of John's part. One day I will learn the banjo because of Lindsey's part.
You Make Loving Fun: Very nice. The end with the harmonic guitar is the best part. I wish Lindsey could have played it and managed to sing his vocal from Rumours, but I'd certainly understand how that could be difficult.
Silver Springs: I had heard the audio and was drooling to SEE the performance. I was not disapointed. I still love the passion in the song.
Rhiannon: LOVE the beginning. "Don't leave me..."
That became a very long post. I'm bored. I might watch The Dance now...although I kinda want to watch LIB.
Anyways, the whole thing is freakin' awesome!

ahhh yes the dance... i remember how excited i was that these guys got back together... the rumour back then was an unplugged set... which turned out to be false..
my highlights are
the piano intro to rhiannon w/ stevie on lead vocal
songbird (stunning)
when some guy shakes the conductors hand after dont' stop
i'm so afraid intro and guitar solo
my fav new song was sweet girl
i didn't get that christine mcvie was bored or not happy... she's just has that musician face versus the entertainer face.... steve winwood has the same faces up on stage... they're focused...

You know, I have to disagree with you there. Sure, a lot of what goes on during a stage show is made to play to the audience, and Stevie even said about Say You Will that she wrote songs about Lindsay and the band because that's why people like Fleetwood Mac so much, the drama between them all (okay, not in those words, but that's what I got out of it). But I'll tell you, having been a singer in a band before, when you write about something that is
very emotional to you, you can't help but feel that emotion every time you sing that. I have songs about a person whom I was very much in love with. Things didn't work out and over the years I've been able to bring closure to the episode of my life. I remember our friendship fondly now, but don't pine for him like I used to, yet, whenever I sing one of those songs, just for the few minutes I'm lost in it, I'm that same emotionally broken 24 year old who's desperately in love with someone I will never have, and it tears me apart. It's an amazing experience, almost like time travel. Once it's over I can take a deep breath and come back to the present, but no matter how many times I sing one of those songs, I'm totally there. So maybe I'm wrong, but it's not hard for me to believe that when Stevie sings Silver Springs, and she looks at Lindsay on the stage, that there a part of her that's transported back to the days when she wrote the song, the first times she sang it, when it was left off of Rumors and the fact that he's still there, all these years later and when she sings "you'll never get away" and he's still there, there's feelings are there.

10 years ago today there was so much chit going on in my life that I had no idea there was even a record! Much less a tour! Shame on me :distress:

S.Springs, oh remember that look between S&L?? Of course later when they repeated the scene during the tour it wasn't big deal, just emotive, but that first one was really thrilling!!
I was thinking the same thing. In fact, I saw a few shows on that tour and they were carbon copies of the televised version more or less.
I didn't like T.One nor MLDemon.
Neither did I.

Undoing the laces - I think you explain it very well in your post.
I would just add that even for a 'mere performance' a person would have to dredge up some genuine emotion for it to be convincing.
Many fans and reviewers have said they have been truly moved by the performances of certain songs at a variety of concerts. Since LB and SN are not the world's best actors judging by their videos:laugh: I can only assume that there is real emotion when they sing particular songs even if some gestures are repeated night after night and seem staged.

I really don't think the emotion we saw during Silver Springs on The Dance DVD was all for show. Stevie has said that during rehearsals and the first night, it just wasn't quite "it" - I have to think they were all a bit nervous, it had been a long time & they had all gone through so much by this point. But that last night they recorded was magic & it all poured out - the joy, the pain (the sunshine, the rain...)
Now - repeating that moment at every show on the tour? Yeah, definitely playing it up. Of course, they knew that the fans SAW this moment on The Dance & would want to see it at their show, so they did it.
I still adore The Dance. Absolutely. I will never tire of it. I will never stop getting goosebumps during GDW. I will never not smile when the marching band shows up for Don't Stop. I will never not tear up when I see Silver Springs and Landslide. I will never stop singing along with all of these songs, and I will never stop making the movements & the facial expressions along with them when I watch. :D

It's definitely Christine's cool, English reserve...
Mary Anne, when did you make that Chris site?! I love it! I hadn't seen those particular BTM shots or the Rumours (?) one with just her and John. Cute.

Thanks. :) ...about a month or so ago. When I switched from dial-up to DSL, Verizon included in my subscription, webspace in which to construct a website. It didn't cost me anything extra, so I just played around with it a little. It's mostly for when I trade, but I just couldn't resist adding a photo gallery.;) You are right about those 2 pictures; they were never posted in the picture thread in the Chris forum. I LOVE that BTM picture, especially.

I know. Now when I watch SS from The Dance I don't get the same goosebumps at the "Never get away, never get away, NEEEEEEEEVER GET AWAAAY" part because I know the "chemistry" going on between them was just for show; it was put on. When I first saw that Dance performance ( and I do mean THE FIRST time I ever saw it) I was totally verklempt. I thought, "wow, look at all that raw emotion going on between those two, they will never get over each other!" What I didn't know is that I was right but not in the way I had thought I was. They'll never get over each other alright...never get over being thorns in each other's sides! Back then I thought there was way more poignancy and sentimentalism between Stevie and Lindsey in that SS performance and now knowing what I know about "the act" they put on for the fans, it looks like it was mostly an act .
I have to disagree. Whenever I watch SS (from any performance) I think back to the 70's and all the years of termoil and I can feel the raw emotion and all the years of their "love hate" relationship coming to a head in SS (read my signature :) ).
I can't believe how many of you guy's became fans from The Dance, that is awesome!
A couple of highlites for me (there are too many to name them all):
The look Stevie and Mick give each other during Say You Love Me, when they're all at the front of the stage and they slow the camera down, Mick just looks so happy. Oh yeah, John McVie on vocals
During GDW and Stevie's Home yell, Micks face in the background. Priceless. It's like, YES, she nailed it!
Hell, I just like it cause Stevie's got her boots on!

Maybe. I wonder though if they knew that THAT was going to be the performance that was going to make the video  If so, I'm sure Stevie (and Lindsey too) played it up for the camera. I just don't buy that there was anything other than a dramatic performance for the sake of the audience and the cameras (for posterity's) between them during that song, but hey I could be wrong (I hope I am!). Stevie's comments in the past couple of months have pretty much put the nail in the coffin of any possibility of romantic sparks between those two now or then. I think I have lost every ounce of shipperdom mentality that ever could have possibly inhabited my brain at this point . I mean, maybe there was something there---anger, frustration, resentment, maybe a little bittersweet poignancy, but I don't buy that they were "back in love again" as Stevie has put it. I think she says that kind of stuff for the fans.

I notice that most of you who've listed your favorite aspects of The Dance mostly list stuff like looks among the members or glances between two ex-lovers or laughs or chuckles or sly winks & nods ... i.e., nothing that's actually musical.
Is everybody just stuck on the pretty romance? doesn't anyone have anything to say about something so mundane as ... oh ... how they played the songs?
if I had never see The Dance but had only read fans' "reviews," I'd be inclined to conclude that there was no actual concert--merely some sort of strange little one-act skit, or some sort of sexy pantomime.

AND - if you notice, the streamers change colors in almost every song due to poor editing

What?! You mean, Fleetwood Mac plays music?

One thing that annoys the hell out of my is on Bleed to Love Her, when they show the aerial shot and it shows Christine playing Maracas up with Stevie and LIndsey in front. HOW DID THEY NOT CATCH THAT.
Gypsy twirls are so great...hell the whole song was great.
Tusk was my favorite for a long time. I absolutely loved when the band cam on stage. Ive seen the dance so many times, if you show me a pic from it i can pick out the song (of stevie of course).

Seems so hard to believe it's been almost as long between the Dance and now as it was between Tango and the Dance.
I'll always think of '97 as a very special year. Seeing the Rumours-era FM again after so much time was one of the greatest moments of my life.
Christine might have been a little bored, but it just isn't the same without her.
